This is a game I think about this time of the year, every year.
It's about time to fire up my account on Atlantic. I have a 20 year old account on there. I don't play much, but I love playing in the winter time.

Anyone else on /vr/ play UO?
Anybody play on the EA pay shards?

>If you want to go to hell, go to Hythloth

I assume it's because UO went live in the fall of '97, I too associate it with cooler weather and shorter days.

I haven't played on a pay shard since 2001, but every one in a while I'll feel the itch and seek out any player run shards with decent populations.

Man I remember the day it went live. I didn't have a clue what I was doing. My buddy and I were scared to go through the moongate in fear of getting lost. LOL
I quit about then too...maybe 99/00.
Then about 08 I started playing every fall/winter on Atlantic.
I like exploring Ilshenar and those weird dungeons. Never know when a paragon will come flying up and kill ya.

Did you play the game in its first days? Why don't you share stories? I'd like to know if, in your opinion, Garriot managed to translate the Ultima saga into a mmorpg.

I did, started playing within the first two weeks of launch. Originally, players could kill each other with magic spells with no reputation penalties. I remember blissfully wandering outside of Vesper towards the graveyard, only to encounter some formidable looking men. I kindly greeted them, only to be paralyzed and lightning bolted to death. Months later we tracked that PK down and I kept his severed head in my bank vault for years.

Keep this thread alive for the next day or so and I'll revisit to tell some epic tales. A few months ago I created a thread on /vr/ entitled "ITT: MMO events everyone claims they were at" and recounted the tale of Lord British being killed by raines at the end of the beta, and discussed early UO at length.

Oddly enough, Ultima Online is the only Ultima game I've ever played. Short of Spoony's Ultima series videos, I have little to no experience with them, but being aware of the lore, it seems fairly consistent, except the UO shards are worlds where there was no Avatar. I was always told that UO was an advanced version of the Pagan engine. What always fascinated me is that everything was inter-actable; every chair, plate, fork. Every human NPC had a backpack that could be picked.

Do people still play on official shards?
>>
So how hard is it to get into UO? Always wanted to try it out. No one to play with though. Do people adventure for loot or is the game mostly the pvp and player killing?
