I was thinking of trying to play through Fire Emblem 1 and Hoshigami. I'm not sure if I should do the original release for both or their DS remakes. Any suggestions from someone who has played through both?

The NES FE1 is super slow, has a bad inventory system, and the AI is dumb. There's also dumb mechanics like certain classes being unable to promote. The DS version has issues but is certainly better.

How faithful is it to the NES release? That's kind of my biggest concern since I don't wanna miss one of the biggest games in the genre.

Its pretty faithful. Some people actuslly complain that its too faithful. The only "extra" maps and characters appear in either the "Normal" difficulty or if you play very badly. The mechanics are updated, the game's balanced a bit better, and everything is faster should you want it to be. Biggest change is the ability to reclass, which is optional.

Oh okay, that's good, I'll boot it up right away then and start playing through it. One more question though.
Is it like modern Fire Emblems where normal is actually easy mode and I should start on hard?

If you've never played FE before or don't feel confident, start on Normal. Otherwise, pick Hard 1*
