P1 was a pretty rough game, but it's still my favorite in the series. The dungeons are fun to explore without being too confusing and the characters are good, especially Maki who is very developed.

Just because they're appealing to "normies" doesn't make P3 and P4 bad games. Hell, Persona was BORN out of wanting to appeal to casuals. Persona 1 and 2 are good games but certainly not for their gameplay.

Atlus obviously wanted something to distinguish the Persona games from the rest of the franchise and that's why they moved away from negotiations. Whether or not replacing negotiations with Social Links is an improvement or not is purely subjective.
