Pic unrelated?
Donkey Kong Country.
>>3624000
much better than >>3624003
avoid saturn version
>>3624003
He said technically impressive. Pixelated cgi garbage isn't impressive at all.
Legend of Mana looks amazing but plays like a dog crap belt scoller.
>>3624000
It uses 3D rendered sprites, intro is video and the game looks and sounds amazing for a megadrive, i'd say is pretty impressive even if the gameplay is very hit and miss.
>>3624015
>It uses 3D rendered sprites,
Which look like shit.
>>3624028
The characters aren't huge like in donkey kong country and mortal kombat so it doesn't really look bad.
Never gets mentioned
>>3624014
>obligatory contrarian opinion to show how much of a TRUE enthusiast and retro gamer he is
DKC's visuals were definitely impressive, considering the hardware, limitations and year that it was launched.
Go fuck yourself, fag.

Try playing the game on a CRT next time, post-millennial.
>>3624012
why avoid the saturn version? i'm pretty sure it was better looking. I've played both.
>>3624012
>Sonic 3D Blast better than DKC
Not sure if contrarian, huge sega/sonic fanboy or troll.
>>3624014
What are you on about? DKC looks great.
Most SNES games that use the Super FX chip fall in this category.

shitty music (exc Ruins), shitty bonus stages, shitty (messy and out of style) ground and background textures

>good use of colors
>Sonic 3D blast

>oversaturated red and blue look out of place
What are you trying to prove?
>>3624252
Am I supposed to find 3D blast better? Because I don't.

wrong on literally every level

yeah but it's also a bretty gud game
cool bait thread anyhow
>>3624252
Sonic 1 is more impressive than 3D Blast.
>>3624252
>That 3D Blast screenshot
Hell I like the game and I can't believe the argument you're trying to make. That looks like absolute shit.
>>3623993
>Mediocre
I hope you are not one of those /v/ faggots who think SA is good, or even better than 3D Blast.
Now if you say mediocre in comparison with the Megadrive trilogy, I can accept that.
Fade to Black was one of the first proper 3d third person shooters released, predating the likes of Tomb Raider, Mario 64 and Quake by a year.
But honestly it's not a great game.

The Megadrive has always been good at compression and 3D Blast has a lot of art crammed into it. Unfortunately it's not that pleasant or colorful to look at. Most of it is stationary. A game like this could be up to twice as large on the SNES but really that depends on who's heading things up. I find this game to be boring. I look at it as more of a technical landmark or Sega saying "Look, we can do that too!"
Sonic 3D Blast and Sonic R have good audio. That's about it.
>>3624056
>CGI in the 16-bit era was impressive regardless of its quality.
Seriously, there are people who were hype for Rise of The Robots
i bet those people are still depressed to this day
>>3624240
In a similar line of thought, I think Power Punch 2 was like the only other game that used MMC2 (I think) which Mike Tyson's Punch Out used to get large animated characters (without the enemy being a background image) which were uncommon on the NES I do not know if Power Punch 2 is mediocre, as I've only had Mike Tyson's Punch Out.
>>3624840
I cite that as an example as to why changing genres for the sequel is often a bad idea. Flashback was a cinematic platformer like Prince of Persia for instance, but the sequel? Yeah.
>>3625135
I was one of those who got hype for it.
R E G R E T
Played it for an hour because of how good it looked though.
>>3624273
>>ground is just a two color squareboard that looks like was made on Paint
To free-up colours for everything else. I'm a SNES fag but I think Sonic 3D looks quite nice. A lot of MD games made good use of dithering.
>>3623993
I really like Sonic, but 3D Blast was not technically impressive. If you want a mediocre but technically impressive game in the Sonic series, maybe Unleashed?
>>3623993
The Evangelion game for N64.
Doom's port for SNES also is a technical marvel but overall mediocre game.
>>3628502
hahah what are you trollin boy?
doom bad? kiss my ass
>>3628793
>doom's snes port
>>3624486
This.
I feel that the old games that are genuinely technically impressive are the ones that do difficult technical feats, which more often involves breaking object limits, advanced physics, effects that most devs thought impossible, etc.
Sonic 1 isn't too technically impressive, but I do find the physics in it more impressive than sprites made from 3D models, since the sprites on a technical level end up being the exact same thing as in other 2D games.

Who would've thought the tiny little 4 MHz processor of the original Game Boy could render solid 3D polygons at a mostly-playable framerate?
>>3629654
Considering that the 1 MHz C64 can handle it, I'm not really surprised.
I was more impressed by vectorman.
>>3624018
Fucking incredible for an NES game. As an RPG, it's alright, kind of like Phantasy Star II SUPER easy mode. Audio/visual is insane for an NES game though.
>>3629646
>>3629654
NES (somehow) had this too, in an unfinished, never released state. It's pretty amazing too, considering that it doesn't even slow down too much during the loop. Genesis/SNES versions drop to half a frame a second on it.

>Sonic 3D Blast
>Better than Donkey Kong Country
/vr/ is much more entertaining that /v/ but in a bad way.
This is one of the most beautiful games I've ever seen, but it just doesn't play all that well.
I truly wish it were better.
Not sure I'd say mediocre, it's just "ok". Definitely one my strangest experiences in video games.
Every Id Software game
