Well...was he right?
>>3613420
I wonder who he was alluding to, Crash Bandicoot?
>>3613425
It's a review for Mario All-Stars so it's probably from 1993. I'm guessing either Bubsy or Aero the Acrobat.
Intredasting.
>>3613420
The first two reviews are both from Dave Halverson, using two different aliases.
>>3613420
>I believe it's time to retire Mario for a more 90's character.
>a more 90's character
fuck, that's the most 90's thing I've read in a long time
>it's time to retire Mario to retire Mario for a more nineties character.
In some bizarro world this happened and alternate dimension /vr/ has another laughinstock character.
>Man, I can't stand those mustachies (Mario fans), they keep producing bizarre deviantart porn involving Mario characters. That all happened after Mario Sunshine Adventure, when they introduced Shadow Mario.
>No man, Mario has been crap since they redesigned the character after the failure of Mario All Stars and Yoshi's Safari. The series became an autist magnet
>>3613420
Early video game mags are so cringy. The 90s autism is real.
>>3613420
>Landstalker, 100%
>shitty Giana Sisters ripoffs, 69%
Sounds like he's got good taste to me.
>>3613420
>someone got paid to write what is the literal equivalent of a /vr shitpost
>>3614005
>shitty Giana Sisters ripoffs
I hope this is bait.
Are they any distinctly 90s characters which are still endearing today? Maybe Crash but they haven't been making games for him for a long time....
>Landstalker
>no flaws
>Mario didn't stood the test of time
Seems like a pro-Genesis, "mario is too kiddy" type of fanboy.
What magazine was this?
>>3614023
>Crash "Literally Poochy" Bandicoot
>endearing
TOP...KEK.
>>3614039
>Crash: 1994
>Poochy: 1997
>>3613420
That first Yoshi's Safari review is pretty much accurate for modern Nintendo as well.
>>3614056
Just because Crash came first doesn't make him not a Poochy-tier character.
>>3614023
no
you can't say the same thing about distinctly 80s game characters either unless you count Mario
what makes a character good goes beyond the time and place and person that created it
>>3614110
That review is shit.
>All you do is shoot, aim and shoot
WOW, it's almost as if it's a shooting game!
>mode7 is bad! the graphics are too happy and colorful I want to dip my SNES in acid!
wew
The 90s were sick but man could it have done without all the edgelord culture.
>>3614464
I was talking more about the first part about not having any of the titles people expect and releasing gimmicky shit nobody wants instead.
>>3614515
Well anyway he was wrong because Super Metroid and Super Punch-Out eventually came out.
He was being unnecessarily harsh with Yoshi's Safari just because he doesn't like colorful graphics, and judging from the rest of the reviews he did, he doesn't seem to like anything Mario-related period. Biased as fuck.
Yoshi's Safari isn't great, but it's not a 4/10 game.
>>3614035
Diehard Game Fan
No, he was completely wrong. He is a /v/ user who has travelled back in time. His opinions are shit and contrarian.
>>3614635
Halverson basically is a /v/ user, 20 years removed.
>>3614651
Damn. I hate /v/tards are much as the next guy but to compare them to that dingus is just plain cruel.
>>3613427
>or Aero the Acrobat
Or Zero the Kamikaze Squirrel.
>>3614653
australia please.
>>3613420
I loved GameFan growing up, but the reviews and articles were always notoriously bad. People read it strictly for the screen shots which were the best for a video game mag at the time.
>>3614023
>Crash
>endearing or even relevant these days
KEKS
WERE
HAD
>>3615132
I love how Nick Rox tore apart Eurotrash games. His page layouts were amazing as well.
>>3614023
>Are they any distinctly 90s characters which are still endearing today?
>>3615263
Domo arigato mr. Bogado
>>3615263
I love Terry, but no one cares about SNK anymore. Maybe only spics.
>>3613420
He was contrarian before /vr/
>>3613420
>Well...was he right?
It's an opinion. Does no one understand what an opinion is anymore? Are you people trying to be stupid?
>>3613420
Game opinions from the '90s are pretty cringeworthy sometimes. My least favorite is when they come down on a game for not having more cutscenes or voice acting. Such fools, they were.
>>3614126
>crash
>poochy
In the actual games he's way too much of a dork and slapstick magnet to have the faux-coolness of Poochy
See pic related, nobody who dances like that is supposed to be 90s xtreme
>>3616871
>Game opinions from the70's, 80's, '90s, 00's and 10's are pretty cringeworthy sometimes
Fixed that for ya
>>3616879
He's still a tryhard, just of another flavor. Not him but Crash is the kind of character Poochy was made to mock.
>>3613420
He's clearly insane
>>3616914
What don't you like about Landstalker?
>>3616937
The colors and the controls!
>>3616947
I forgot /vr/ can't into iso controls.
>>3616951
Wouldn't you prefer if Landstalker controlled like Zelda?
>>3616957
I played Landstalker before Zelda so I guess I never looked at it that way. Not really.
>I think those little jap bastards love to freak, no i take that back i know those little jap bastards love to freak on military Sims and that's cool if your a little jap bastard but I am not.
what did he mean by this?
>>3616996
I still have a copy of that issue. What a ruckus it caused.
>>3616886
Sort of, but not 100%. Poochie was a mix of the faux-radicool thing and the various times companies tried to inject some life into a cartoon by forcing a new character (usually really shitty) into everything.
>>3616996
I'm shocked anybody actually discovered it. I mean, the best hiding place in the world has to be in a sports game review inside an issue of DieHard GameFan magazine.
Jesus, and I thought Sushi-X was a dumbass.
>that review
SNES port of Mortal Kombat confirmed for objectively superior to the first three Mario games
History has spoken
>>3613420
i'm more triggered that they all loved landstalker so much
>>3613420
I've never played landstalker but jeez I apparently need to
>>3613420
Sounds like the kind of cunt that would be saying there needs to be more transformer dick girls and feminist themes in games today.
>>3613420
What magazine is this
>>3618771
Cuntflaps Daily.
>>3618820
Thats really funny nigga
For that year they did pick Gunstar Heroes as their Game of the Year.
>>3613439
I'm guessing I should average the two to get the guy's actual opinion
Not OP, but picture in >>3619145 was from my failed Game magazine's thread for September ... so here is one from November 1995. What do you think of the opinions from 21 years ago?
>>3619195
>Every single game is rated above average
>>3615132
>People read it strictly for the screen shots which were the best for a video game mag at the time
It's really all you need. I don't want to choke down some "journalist's" opinions about a game to get me hyped for it. I'd rather just see and speculate for myself.
they're right you know
>>3619195
Hah, this is one of the few issues I've held onto since I was a kid. Got in trouble for having in it school because of one ad with a bikini model in it or something. Their review for EWJ2 is pretty spot on, but everything else seems rated WAY too high. Either that or this magazine was just written by a bunch of crazy college kids who fucking loved video games. Imagine that!
The other reason I've always loved Gamefan is that they were one of the few magazines that gave Yoshi's Island the credit it deserved. So many other reviewers out there were just bitching that it wasn't somehow a carbon-copy of Mario World. No wonder games turned to shit. Developers pour there heart into something unique and get shit on because it's too different.
>>3619301
Pretty accurate. Mario 64 has lost some of its sheen with age, but really the only thing I can complain about is the camera being a little persnickety. Young 'uns who weren't alive back then really can't appreciate how much of a game-changer it was.
>>3619301
They're opinions. So they're right if you agree with them.
>>3619294
>It's really all you need.
I agree with this. Though I liked the reviews, I often disagreed with them and one of the main reasons I read it more than the others was the layout and quality of the pictures. Between that and knowing how various reviewers opinions compared to mine it was pretty handy in picking the games I was interested in spending my time with.
>>3616937
>isometric platforming
no thank you
>>3614035
>>Landstalker
>>no flaws
Sounds accurate to me. Maybe it is you who are flawed.
>>3615263
Endearing but nobody knows who he is anymore. Sad emoticon.
