I know about isopropyl rubbing alcohol and a q-tip, but what other methods are there (if there are any)?
Alcohol is the first step. If that doesn't work, the next step is a latex-free pencil eraser. I've only had two cases where that didn't work and I had to bring out a razor blade to scrape corrosion off of contacts.

q-tip and 95% hydrofluoric acid
opening the pcb board itself helps immensely

OP. Already got got a security bit so I'm good on opening them. Only really challenge is opening Famicom games...

Get one of those white retractable pencil erasers. Erase the fuck out of the pins you can visibly see them get shiny and clean as the tarnish comes off. Then follow up with alcohol and qtip or whatever to get the eraser dust off and any left over grime.

For really filthy/corroded carts I'll start by scrubbing the PCB with a plastic or brass brush in soap and water.
I do general cleaning in an ultrasonic cleaner with alcohol.
I use a buffer with cloth or plastic head for the fingers.
Wet naps for the case.

Sandpaper

Only ultra-fine, 200 grit paper, very lightly brushed against the contacts to remove VISIBLE corrosion. Like, 5 strokes. Alcohol after that.

If iso doesn't get the dirt off try Brasso and a tooth brush. That's how I cleaned my nes' 72 pin....pins on the mobo, believe me they somehow got dirty enough to warrant it.

A lot of people say not to use Brasso. Personally I use it and clean it off with alcohol afterwards. Works just fine.

lol. You mean, like, 2000 grit right? 80 - 200 is for smoothing out some wood.

lol right? morons talking about 200 grit sandpaper and fucking razors on electrical contacts.

which forme?

Use the official Nintento Cleaning Kit.
We had one. It worked.
But iso-propyl and a Q-Tip brand cotton swab will do just fine.

Just blow on it, works everytime

This. Never had problems... just have to make sure you get all the brasso off.

Metal cleaner to clean metal. Who'da thunk it?
Pure genius on 4chan's part I reckon.

It's usually a good idea to clean the 72 pin thing on the inside of the NES itself. If the carts are dirty, the pin connector probably is too.
