I always hear about adult retrogamers with kids wanting to keep all their old games around so the kiddos can enjoy them too, but does this ever work out? my brother even built a homemade arcade stick and cabinet around his super nintendo the perfect height for a child to play on, and they don't even like that shit. would rather watch lets plays on youtube
>>
I'm going to show my kids my favorite games but not fucking indoctrinate them into any obligations.
>>
>>3604141
And you liked your dads toys growing up?
>>
>>3604176
My siblings and I played the shit out of my dad and uncle's cowboys & indians figures whenever we visited our grandparents.
>>

>>
>>3604195
Lincoln logs, with cowboys and Indians were definitely a childhood favorite of mine. While watching old Westerns on VHS.
>>
>>3604141
My brother keeps his kids away from his vidya, which he never has time to play anyway cause he has kids + a job.

Though I have doubts they would have the patience to sit down for more than 10mins to play something.
>>
My nieces and nephew won't play anything for more than a minute unless it has a touch screen or motion controls, and is impossible to lose.

Yeah, I love my games, but I often wish I wasn't such a social moron.

I'm almost 40, and I have enough real world experience to fake being a cool guy. Co-workers and friends think I'm a normie, for the most part. And yet I have only ever had 1 gf, and it only lasted a week.

Truth is that I'm a total autist, and I can trace that shit directly back to when I got my first NES as a kid. I would never want to put another kid through all of that.
>>
>>3604315
40 and has only had one short relationship.
You should be proud that you haven't killed yourself yet man; I would have.
>>
>>3604320
Bro, I didn't say I couldn't fake my way through getting laid. I said I cannot fake my way through a relationship.
>>
>>3604320
I can't form any lasting relationships because video games have ruined my expectations of reality.
I'm not socially inept or anything, but getting close to people is hard because there just isn't anything in common anymore.
My interests are games and watches. No one is into that shit anymore and I hide my powerlevel too well to be able to talk with autists.
>>
>>3604251

That gif tells me you probably don't have any genes worth passing on

You sound like the prince in Marco Polo, who has never learned how to take an insult and save face, and goes to complain to his dad Kubla, that it's because he made him train under the wisest people in the world that he's not a hardened asshole mongol. "If I whine like a woman, it's because you made me this way!"

He didn't do shit. Just like video games aren't responsible for your dumbass superstitions. You were born that way, and because of your personal ideals, fell unto your predispositions for shyness/social ineptitude. I have bleached teeth because I grew up next to a water treatment plant in a poor city, and now have a problem looking people in the face when I talk to them. It's not the environment that made me this way, just like other kids my age who suffer the same don't all end up this way. It was my doing and upbringing irregardless of my situation. Not everyone my age in my city also ended up shy even if they had bad teeth like me.

You're both the way you are because you've never introspected in your entire lives, and can't own up to the self you would meet if you ever did. And the reason is because you never put a value on ideals that would lead you to self-examine or grow personally in any measure.

If he gave them an arcade cabinet, it's their own damn choice whether to play SNES games with it or not!

My father gave me a glorified expensive PC in hopes that I would play flight sims, code Basic and C++, and probably also use accounting software with it, and did I do that stuff? Shit no!

They don't have to like what he does, SNES is old hat, and awfully unimpressive compared to newer connectible things, even with things demanding analog controls or HD monitors excluded.

The trick is not to force it. If an adult is playing with something often the younger kid will become interested and want to imitate it. If you stick a kid down and say "have fun with this!" They're just going to see it as obligation

Plastic figures are timeless, though. Video games are different, think of it from a kid's perspective. Why play this old blocky shit when you could play the modern stuff? It's like having them watch VHS tapes when you own the blu-ray of the movie too.
>>
>>3604176
Lego's, baseball glove/ball/mitt, Lincoln Logs, Atari? I absolutely did. What are you implying?
>>
>>3606082
My brother has gotten his daughter, who's now 7, into being a fan of Doctor Who just like him, and since a majority of his DW collection are the VHS tapes he bought when he was younger, she thinks nothing about popping those into the VCR.

>my brother even built a homemade arcade stick and cabinet around his super nintendo the perfect height for a child to play on, and they don't even like that shit. would rather watch lets plays on youtube
How old are they? They'd probably be more interested in stuff like that when they get older.
Kids generally prefer to play new games, unless we're talking specific circumstances.

The only real good vector for showing a kid something older is an older sibling showing them something specific, when your parents do it it's kind of lame, there has to be a taboo factor to it.
My brother showed me Terminator when I was like, 8, and I thought it was the coolest shit ever. Likewise he showed me (the at the time, brand new) Quake 2, and while I thought that was the bees knees, I later barged in on him and a friend playing Doom 2, and I thought that was even cooler, I was like 7 then, and at around 6 he had shown me Diablo. Shit like that got me to poke around on the computer and find Duke Nukem 3D (a game he really didn't want me to play), which I loved as much as Doom, despite how dated it was at the time.

Basically, what he needs is a cool older sibling, cousin or friend who can show him really cool select stuff to get him interested in older things.
If you do it as a parent, it won't have NEARLY as good effect (if it even works at all). Get your nephew to show him Robocop or Army Of Darkness or something.

>>3604176
No, my dad is boring and autistic, he's like 60 now and I don't recall him passing on really any toys to me at all, aside from part of a train set. All my inherited lego came from my brothers.
>>

His fault for being such a damn fool!

Making such a cheap inferior shadow of a real arcade.

What a waste, not using a Saturn, a console that was actually arcade-grade, and just overall way better and more impressive.

It's not possible to be a single parent. They just aren't there enough to help their kid. They just "lol time for another glass of wine poop on the walls I hate kids."

Meanwhile, get a nice waifu that actually stays home and it is heaven on earth. I am legitimately mad no one told me to do this sooner.

I won't tell them that the stabbings weren't over video games kek.

This, or a cool uncle.

Fortunately, I am that cool uncle. My nephew is a little nerdy, interested in toys and games and is nine years old. We got along super well.

Buying him those light-up lightsaber toys and hitting each other over and over with them as they made the sounds was super fun as well.

/vr/ children are just like any other children. Because they're still children. And as children do they make up stories about how they did something they saw on TV.
I'm sorry you're assmad you got called on it. Your defensiveness proves my points about /vr/ children.
>>
>>3604141
>I'll give kids new stuff and old stuff and they'll want the old stuff.

that's what I plan to do anyway
>>
>>3604176
not him but my parents didn't have much growing up, and they certainly didn't save much to give to me
I got new toys, and by new I mean beat up Hot Wheels and shit that I didn't care about because I had TV and a Nintendo, except when I stuffed shit into a wooden car and hooked it up to an outlet to see if I could make it go back in time or something
>>
>>3604687
not exactly, but your life can have a physical influence
There are compounds that sort of snap on to DNA and influence how it's read. Which ones you have and where they are and how many there are are influenced by your health and your habits. Those compounds make up what's called your epigenetics, and they can be passed on to children.
It's very much an emerging branch of genetics though, so no one knows how much effect you'll have or on which areas. Early signs point to it mostly influencing things like whether you're enormously fat or merely huge and not which games you like.

Dad here,

My 7 year old son loves playing the N64. He enjoys it more than the Wii U. His go to's are Starfox 64, Majoras Mask, MK64, & Super Mario 64.

He doesn't care much for the Sega Genesis, he's played a few titles on the SNES.
>>
>>3606650

>>
>>3604141
I was born in 1995, and I remember my babysitter used to bring over her old NES from time to time. Maybe because we lacked smartphones and high speed internet, I thought it was really cool.

I also remember being infinitely frustrated at duck hunt in her combo cartridge. Mainly because she lacked a gun, so I had no idea what the fuck to do.

They usually piss everyone off because they're autistic and just say anything and everything that comes to mind, no matter how inappropriate.
>>
>>3608230
>being this needy
>>
>>3621271
>>socially inept
>>extrovert
>pick one

What else are they?
Introverts aren't interested in listening to noisy freaks like Piediepie shriek about the latest meme game. They watch videos to learn new things and sate their curiosity.

Theodore Kazynski wrote about how technology is making people into worse human beings. The kids growing up today feast on Vines and consider a ten minute youtube video long enough that they have to take a break (switch to another tab) halfway. Kindergartners today attempt to swipe the pages of their schoolbooks and are frustrated when the text doesn't change. In the lunchroom children all have their heads down texting other kids across the table.

Ironically all this electronic social networking has left people feeling disconnected from each other. They sooth their lonelyness by watching let's plays; feeling that those e-celebs are their "friends".

Did you think that extroverts (80+ percent of people) are immune to the damaging effects of digital saturation during their formative years?

I have a kid. He's 3 and a half. He likes the remake of Mickey's Enchanted Castle and sometimes he wants to play the Genesis version. He's open to going back and checking out earlier versions of games there are fresh versions of. He doesn't process that old games are "worse" or anything, just different. Of course I don't shove them down his throat either.
