What's your favorite Dungeon Crawler / Dungeon RPG?
What are the essentials?
Stygian Abyss, 'cause that's the only one I've ever played.
... Well, if you don't count a shitstain by the name of "Death Watch"

Wizardry and Might&Magic series are both essential. Some other good onesbare Ultima Underworld 1 and 2, Eye of then Beholder 2, Dungeon Master

This.
Already said, but Ultima Underworld 1/2 is an absolute must play crawler.
Shadow Tower and King's Field are pretty great

>that excitement when you first got upgraded armor and your character changes.
I was hyped as fuck when I got plate mail and my warrior looked like this. Duped and hacked on b.net, of course kek.
Best game ever.

>Tfw duping as an 8 year old just to get pass The Butcher.

I liked the dungeon sections in Phantasy Star

Somewhat linear but soo much fun. A classic.

The creators of Arx Fatalis claim it's a spiritual successor to the Ultima Underworld games, to the point where they even originally planned to call it Ultima Underworld 3 before failing to get the license.
Wizardry 8 is the best for me, it kills me how few games are similar, M&M VI comes close though.
Does anyone actually know any decent turn based dungeon crawlers similar to Wizardry 8? Even non-retro, if you could just mention the names I won't discuss it here. The few I've tried that fit the bill just don't feel as fluid, they're all so heavy on resource management, like a roguelike.

Not retro, but Arx is definitely worth the Ultima Underworld name. I don't think it's as polished as UU1/2, but it's a damn good game regardless.

Everyone I knew duped when Diablo 1 was young even if it was just gold for gambling. I beat the Butcher after a million tries. I wish I knew about the gate trick way back then.

You eventually got that epic cleaver!

Yeah too bad it sucked though. God teir melee weapons were +to hit and damage with a speed suffix iirc.
Although someone on here was talking about how fun ironman running d1 is with 2handed weapons and low armor class.

Wizardry.
"The Llylgamyn Saga" for Playstation is an excellent remake of the first three games with most everything available in English except for the extras (like the monster gallery).
Wizardry Gaiden IV for the SNES just got fan translated and I've been having a lot of fun with that. Definitely one of my top picks due to fantastic variety of enemies and loot, high level of difficulty and very good graphics and sound.

There's really nothing like Wizardry 8 apart from M&MVI-VIII and then those games really aren't anything like it apart from being first person with free movement.
>>3601841 Rogue. Also Nethack.

I think it's great until the Dwarven mines. Some enemies have bloated hp pools, but that's about all my grievances.
As for the thread subject, I've been having a lot of fun with Shining in the Darkness. Well, those besides those instakiller spells, those can fuck right off.
