So is there any method to dodging the asteroids or is this game just a bunch of garbage?

Just a guess; this game doesn't limit its framerate, thus you should use dosbox and lower the emulation cycles

The only 'luck' aspect in this game is in the Kurasawa system when you have to escort a capture Ralari destroyer. Even that can be accomplished by double-activating autopilot as you cruise around your route, so when you run into enemies, you actually come out CLOSER to them than normal. That gives you plenty of time to save the Ralari unless your skills just suck.
