Anyone else get the Japan versions of nintendo games to save money?
I sanded the corners off this bitch just to save 20 bucks from buying the usa one
>>
>>3596915
I've been tempted to a couple of times, but at the same time i can't read Japanese. I also enjoy the cover art on some of the Japanese carts more than the NA ones.
>>
I don't collect much in the way of retail games these days but I used to collect a fair amount of imports because I prefer them to US releases.
>>
>>3596915
I brought an Everdrive 64 and can play all the games I want.
>>
>>3596979
This. N64 is one of the consoles that benefits most from a flash cart. N64 game prices have gotten ridiculous to the point where an Everdrive is the price of 3 or 4 of the most popular N64 games.
>>
>>3596915
That's not the cover of J SM64
>>
>>3597020
Its the '97 re release RUMBLE PAK edition
>>
>>3597020
It's the shindou edition. Some of the lag has been reduced, some glitches patched, and rumble pak support added. It also has longer loading times, and when you grab a pole or tree, you twirl around it awkwardly instead of just instantly grabbing it.
>>

I was collecting japanese n64 games for a while, I learned the following:
>you can get Japanese games in the box for less than a loose US cartridge.
>games have a lot more text than you remember.
>following along on YouTube video while playing is no fun.
>owning Pokemon blue in the box in Japanese would impress 3rd grade me
>>

Do I need a converter or so when I want to play a jap. game on a PAL console?
>>
>>3597497
Regarding N64, of course. Although I do wonder about this on any console.
I know that it's fine on handhelds for some reason.
>>
>>3596979
Same.

For the reasons >>3596992 mentioned. Just getting SM64, MK64, Smash and a Zelda would be more than an ED64, it's insane.

At least both the NES and SNES have a lot of good games that are still under $20. With N64, all the good games are $30-60 and over.

I pretty much only import now if I want physical copies of games, mostly Ps1 and Super Famicom.
Most recently I got Klonoa DTP and Sparkster for about $30 each. Another one I have is Thunder Force V on PS1, I never the see Working Designs one for less than $100 and I snagged the JAP copy for about $40. One thing I gotta say is holy fuck is it cheap(er). Also whats cool is Thunder Force V is still in full english, not really a huge deal though considering its a shooter

I was weirded out by the voice differences in Mario Kart 64 though.

Man of taste. If it's in English and a Jap game, you're better off buying the Jap version.

>mfw I got Clock Tower 2 for 30 dollars when the NTSC-U version is over 100
>>
Just buy a bunch of EEPROMs and flash them over the cartridge games you want.

That's how I got my Star Ocean translated.
>>
>>3596992
It benefits because the n64 library is trash but there are a couple dozen great games that would add up to the cost of an ED64. So why not spend $180 to get the entire joke of a library.

And just saying n64 prices aren't too bad. You can still get golden eye, Mario 64 and the rest of the essentials for 10-25 bucks. Which isn't terrible. Plus other games like clay fighters or shit like that are sub $10
>>
>>3597760
You need an EEPROM writer too though. If you're going to be buying eeproms and a writer, you might as well get a flash cart.
>>
>>3597818
Yeah but I like having a small collection of games.
>>
>>3597454
>you can get Japanese games in the box for less than a loose US cartridge
Why Americans don't care about boxes and item condition in general? Unlike Japanese you guys have big apartments, so throwing out boxes and manuals makes no sense.
>>
>>3597887
Japan cares more about collections and retail packaging than the US. CD's are still bigger than digital music there despite the tiny living spaces for many Japanese people.
>>
>>3596915
I got the N64 before it came out in America and Europe by buying myself a Jap one so I own jap bomberman 64 and jap super mario 64, pilot wings etc. it was a bit of a hassle since I don't speak the language.

It was cool being their before anyone else back when I really cared about games still.

In my experience the only really absurd prices I've seen for an N64 game is Super Mario 64.

Everything else I look up has reasonable prices. And if it's a smidge above-average in pricing then I take the plunge because I value those games anyways. I would only consider it a rip-off if the cart is incredibly marred by things like scuffed up stickers or permanent marker writing, stuff like that. Games I consider to be really great like Wave Race 64, Yoshi's Story and Pokémon Puzzle League are very cheap for some reason.

I recently got a bundle for both Banjo-Kazooie and Banjo-Tooie for only $40. I'm afraid of how much the golden Zelda carts go for though. I imagine those are insanely expensive.
>>
>>3597502
>I know that it's fine on handhelds for some reason

Handhelds all use the same screen. There is no issue with NTSC vs. PAL. That is why European games will play on a US gameboy and vice versa.
>>
>>3598045
The one I'd really like that doesn't seem to be dropping in price anytime soon is Conker; I'd also like to play the Animal Forest English patch on hardware which is why I'm tempted by an Everdrive. I'm curious about the differences between SM64 and the Japanese re-release, I almost bought it but if there are control differences I might reconsider.
>>
Yeah, I've got a decent collection of super famicom games complete in box, most were like 80 dollars or more under the price for a us cart, playing link to the past right now, don't have any experience with any other systems but I love collecting for the super famicom, plus there's some amazing games we didn't even get over here like front mission
>>

>>
>>3600062
It has rumble pak support
>>
>>3597813
Yes, you can find the common games like SM64 on the cheap, but it takes some hunting and dedication because most people sell these carts for like $25 a pop
>>
>>3597738
How is the N64 Custom Robo if I don't know Japanese?
>>
>>3598045
Either Zelda game, if it's the Collector's Edition cartridge, will absolutely be priced absurdly. I don't know why, it's not as if the gold carts are that much rarer than the gray ones, and it's not as if they haven't been ported to every Nintendo system since, but I've never seen one being sold at under $50 in the last 5 years.

So you'll sand chunks off an original copy, but you're too good to buy a flashcart.
>>
>>3600049
Yea it does, I wouldn't recommend it to anyone new to the game, but I've been playing the game since it came out, probably beat it at least 10 times so I know what to do
>>
>>3600034
Man that goldeneye cover looks fucking sick
>>
>>3600034
Loose, those are 108 yen games if you go to the right hard off.
Shit, at the right rural hardoff you can get stuff like Banjo Kazooie boxed for 240 yen

Goldeneye is fuck expensive in nippon though, I've seen it behind glass for 5400.
>>
>>3600525
Yeah but it comes with a console plus 2 controllers and all the necessary cables. I already own an RGB N64, I intendo to sell the console an keep the carts. I know I've an account at from japan, the main problem I'll have to handle two shipments and twice the taxes from both proxies I use to send stuff from japan to the shithole I live. I'll make my final decision tonight. Thats really interesting the japanese 007 costing this much =0
>>
>>3600175
the "chunks" you sand off are in the console, not the cart.
>>
>>3597818

not him, but Star Ocean uses some type of special chip and won't play on an Everdrive (at least the Krikkz one). Same deal with Lagrange Point
>>
>>3600089

Fellow non-weeb here. I found it completely unplayable at first pass, gave up after five minutes.

Maybe it's playable if you painstakingly watch a youtube video, pause, select a menu item, back to youtube, etc.

There are a couple of Jap mecha games that are completely playable though. Bangaioh and Last Legion. I might be missing out on some in-depth options but they're fun.
>>
>>3596915
Depending on your budget, either go for the games or get an everdrive.

A week ago, my fitness instructor told me how he found a Sega Genesis in his attic. I asked if he found any games, but he said no. So I recommended looking for an Everdrive. I even mentioned how some of them have the ability to play the CD and 32X add-ons.
>>
>>3600034

Got these for 1/3 of what they normally cost. It's not easy hunting but it's worth it. The most i spent was 20 on Ocarina but it was because i bought it from a 12 year old and i got Majora's Mask from him too for 5 bucks with the expansion included. He realized he got ripped and game me Ocarina a little more expensive lol
>>
I think the best way to get your hands on games is to buy them locally in bulk and sell the ones you already have/don't want on ebay

I've managed to get games like OoT, Banjo kazooie and ALTTP essentially for free by buying an entire collection of friends games for a decent price and putting the shovelware/duplicates on ebay for a fair but decent price

Although for some games like Paper mario and earthbound you're going to be hard pressed to find like this
>>
Sometimes, I am a cheap shit though so more often anymore I go to burned disks and flash carts.

I'm considering buying NES and SNES flash carts but none of them do the 100% I'm looking for. In particular SNES is ridiculous. 200 bucks and you still can't play a bunch of the really good games?
>>
>>3601351
Okay.

It's the main reason I'm even buying games currently.
Having games that wasn't released here helps as well of course, but cheap games is great.
Also better boxarts in the few cases I care.
>>
>>3601580
I definitely want to, but never find any suckers selling their old stuff.
>>

You could always get Google Translate on your phone or something when certain menus pop up. Could be fun.

>>3601580
I agree on that, but I can never bring myself to go through the effort of parting the lots back out... so I never go for them because I wouldn't want to overpay.
>>
>>3596915
No, but I get them because that's mostly what we have here and I can read moon. But yes, they are cheap. I paid about a buck for my loose copies of SM64 and two for my NIB.
>>
>>3596915
>I sanded the corners off this bitch just to save 20 bucks from buying the usa one

Is it seriously that easy?
>>
>>3596915
I do it for Famicom because most of them don't have/need text anyways. Just got mega man 1-5 for 100 bucks.

Also Kirby was less than 10. Even on ebay.

Of course you can get jp exclusives too, and many of them can be reasonably priced.
>>
>>3596915
Isn't it easier to just mod the console rather than fuck up the cartridge?

It definitely is with the SNES.
>>
>>3596915

>>
>>3601824
The trick is to find people who doesn't grow up with the consoles. I've gotten some really good steals from older people selling their children's old games or even gen Z kids who have some older consoles

Most millenials are going through their nostalgia phase right now so you aren't going to get any good deals from them due to their emotional attachment. You need to find the people who don't care which may seem hard, but if you ask around you're bound to find something
>>
>>3596915
Yeah I used to. But mainly for games I didn't have like Kirby 64 and shit like that. It's so easy to mod a system to play jap games.
>>
>>3598045
How the hell is Mario 64 so expensive? It was the N64 launch title, and was a big success. I doubt there's any shortage of copies.

Yes, I sold all my USA copies of Super Nintendo games a couple years back and bought imported copies, and then some.
I'm not super anal about condition so I got some pretty good deals on complete copies with some scuffed up boxes.
Only thing I never got that I originally had was CV4.
>>
>>3603984
where do you get your cib sufamis at?
>>
>>3603992
facebook sellers, ebay, friends abroad
I've had most of these for a couple years now, then it was a lot easier to find some sellers that did good combined shipping deals and started all their auctions at $0.99, I got a good chunk of them this way. Sometimes you can snag up a well-priced BIN as well.

Ebay certainly still has deals to be found, but you need to be vigilant, there's many terribly priced copies of these games out there now. Always look for combined shipping too.
>>
>>3603005
Yeah, if you see a bunch of middle aged and older people running, say, a garage sale, there's a good chance you can get great deals. If they're any younger than 35 forget it
For example, I got a Saturn off of Craigslist for $30 from a woman selling her son's and husband's old vidya collection.
>>
>>3604013
do you go to garage sales advertised on craigslist or just look for signs locally?
I'd think the latter would attract less of the pickers and you could get lucky but it's harder to look for them.

You can easily pick up the Japanese version of LoZ Ocarina of Time for $10-$15, which is about $10 cheaper than the US OOT.

Then apply gameshark codes to activate English.

>>3603984
>>3604149

Doesn't it bum you guys out having copies of RPG's that you can't even play? Or do you read moonrunes?

I have a few SFC versions of expensive SNES games like Super Aleste and R Type 3, but those games were censored in the US releases and have no text to read. What's even the point of owning games you can't play?

Not trying to sound mean just curious what the appeal is.
>>
>>3606535
/vr/ has a pretty sizable population of people who weren't too lazy to learn Japanese.
>>
>>3605574
That's in no way unique or surprising. They did the same with nearly every neo geo cart. I think one or two of the handheld games were single language.
Why? Why not? Text takes up very little space. You can encode it to take up even less. Even in a text heavy game it takes up a fraction of the space of other assets.

>>3606535
The appeal for me is that I learned Japanese 30 years ago and played imports because often US releases were a year later. I need to play the Japanese versions if I want to experience the game as the nostalgia gods originally intended.
