He has an Italian accent. The common pronunciation is Mar-ree-yo, what he says sounds more like Mah-ri-yo. Try saying Paper Mahrio and Super Mahrio 64 consistently during conversation, it'll sound silly and grow tiresome after a while. It only works when the character himself says it during commercial promos and intros or whatnot. Normies who don't give a shit about Mario let alone video games in general erroneously pronounce it as Mare-ree-yo. They tend to be ultra North American conservatives.
