I want to pre-emptively dispute anyone who says "Return to the Cathedral" from Theif. Wasn't scary at all, I was expecting to be spooked to hell and back but it was just a regular level cept I was allowed to kill enemies.

Final level of Theif 2 was scarier because the bots were everywhere and could kill me so easily.

I always thought the Spooky chapter in Conker's Bad Fur Day always stuck out like a sore thumb. The sudden shift in tone was spooky as fuck when I first played it.

Also, this is something that I distinctly remember in the game. Following one of the villagers leads to a point where it'll get to the spike pit and rather than cross safely, will jump to its death. I noticed this on the Xbox port, but apparently it is on N64 as well. I'd love to see someone with the means of doing so rerecord this in higher quality than the video below.

I believe this is the only one on that part of the chapter. It's easy to miss, which is probably why I can't find shit on this villager other than this youtube video.

Definitely adds to the creepiness though.

I was a dumb little kid, but I found the dungeons in Zelda 1 to be a little spooky. They had skellingtons and mummbies, and the music was very eerie and sad sounding.

Sorta the same feeling for the castles in SMB1 to a lesser extent, I blame the solid black backgrounds, as the All Stars remake didn't evoke the same feeling.

Something tells me that villager is just a glitch leftover from the Bat Sequence, and either just spazzed out to kill itself, or was possibly programmed to get rid of itself if still around (probably the former though, it could have killed itself much easier).

Ch. 3 of Paper Mario. The Forever Forest evokes that primal fear of being in the woods at night, seeing scary faces in trees and wandering in circles for hours, lost.

Returning through here after defeating Tubba Blubba, one feels proud to have conquered their fears.
