Just got the other 36" in the loft It's a wreck right now but will get sorted out when some new goodies show up. Hunting a low oak stand or cabinet to set the jvc on and match the mitsu colors and height, might end up building an L shaped stand that makes a shelf between them to hold consoles and the sub.(shielded)

Missing from this pic, DC, NES and Genesis, they're downstairs until I get more shelving.

Thanks, anon. I took that pic immediately after rigging it up, so it's a little unnaturally bare...

Maybe I'll sell the PAL one, who knows?

Not much at the moment. The one controller I have kind of sucks and replacements are stupid expensive. The place I bought the Famicom from tossed it in as a freebie/test cart. I'm not really into it but my housemate played it a lot as a kid so he thought it was neat to see it again. We played against each other a bit.

They seem to be shielded and not affecting the display.
I have another pair of what I thought were the same model of speakers, but they cause really obvious distortion when put beside the monitor, so I got to see the difference between shielded and unshielded speakers.
>>
>>3561304
PVMs have a steel case. It's so you can stack them and put them in a rack without them interfering with one another but they shouldn't see interference from speakers. I have my 14" sitting on top of a Bose with a 10" driver and it does twist the image slightly though but I feel like the bottom is the least shielded part of them.

for like 10 bucks and they sound great and are shielded.

The only place it's an issue is onthat CRT under the stairs and whatever I have sitting on top of it and on top of the big 15" bass cabinet that's lying there face down as the table. I'm more worried about moisture with it, too. Moisture is a bitch but better than heat.

Appreciate it, anon. You're right that a cabinet would make the equipment look more presentable, but it would also probably take up more floor space. I like how it's set up right now, except I need to root around for some cables to hook up the TV to the stereo and get game audio pumping through those floor speakers.

I'm surprised that there is so little actual obscure stuff here. At any rate, I unfortunately don't have just one setup - it's scattered across like 3 rooms - this is my main work desk now, so to speak.

I was wondering if anyone would be interested in a servace that rewrites Famicom Disk System games to a game of your choosing, I'm considering starting something like that and I want to know if there would be any interest
>>
>>3563637
Obscure stuff is obscure for a reason: it's hard to find.

I wouldn't even know where to look for something like a Fairchild Channel F and Channel F games aside from online, and that's assuming I even wanted a Channel F.
>>
>>3563637
I think the FDS-Stick and similar have shrunk your potential market, but there are definitely people who would take advantage of a service like that. Particular people with original disks in cases that no longer work etc...
>>
This picture is 2 years old now. I have way more games, and I have a Disk System for the famicom now. Also got a new TV.

Yes, I play retro on a CRT. I use a Trinitron.

>>3562578

>>3563470

Are those consoles actually plugged in behind the shelf or would you have to fiddle with them before use? Comfy though

>>3564029

This is not a battle station, this a laboratory.
>>
>>3563750
I've seen a Fairchild channel F in a store. It was at this ancient ass game store run by this old man in Grove City Columbus O. If you have a chance, go look for it assuming it's still there. He seemed tied and discouraged. Said he had boxes of old stiff at home on his garage he just didn't have the energy to stock the shelves with and was pissed about all the resellers he would get assaulted by anytime he posted about it on Craigslist. I felt bad for him. I gave him him my contact info and told him straight up that I would cherry pick it but that it would go into my collection. I think I might have irritated him after that by lowballing him on a bunch of common but complete Genesis games he only had marked at 99 cents and I was buying just for their clamshells - he was right into me for that.

The shop was an anachronism you could trek it had operated constantly since the 80s. More tempting than the Channel F, I would have liked to have bought a Japanese pre-buyout Sony branded "Advantage" controller with the Famicom multi-port plug on it. He didn't like my offer though and I just didn't have the $30 he had on it. I don't know who he thought was going to walk in and buy it. It was a real cool place but also kind of sad. Even though it'd been there thirty years at least it also wouldn't surprise me of it was gone now just a couple years later.
>>
>>3564094
Yeah I have them plugged into either of two power strips and then the av cables go to a switch box. The switch box was the best decision I've ever made with my setup honestly.

This is my current setup. I was able to get a widescreen Sony Trinitron real cheap and it's much bigger than the other CRT I had before, so I had to rearrange everything to make room for it. The other small tv on the left is there really just because it has a VHS player built in. I had a separate VHS player but it just stopped working and it's been on repair for ages. Unfortunately the one on the small tv is starting to malfunction as well. I'm having a real hard time getting a reliable way to watch old movies on VHS. The old consoles work just fine in comparison. The only one I've ever had problems with is the original XBOX.

If you have a Sony 1080p led, higher end model, from the past 5 years. Or a Samsung uhd from the last few years with HDMI 2.0 -They have PC mode options in their settings, getting their frame delay and sample delay down to gaming monitor times ( and lower than some ). Combined with the framemeister frame delay, you can expect 1.5-2.5 frames of total delay. No it isn't CRT at 0.1-0.8 frames of delay but pretty close.

For other LEDs... No. For plasma and dlp/projector then yes get a framemeister.

Quality is outrageous with the scalet and it is only slow when changing between resolutions. Like metal gear solid going between resolutions for videos and gameplay.

Probably my best investment next to my pvm or my 36 inch CRT for retro.

I honestly just want to give it a shot before blowing a bunch of cash on something I might never use. Not sure if you're referring to ultra HD, or a model number prefix, but I have a 1080p samsung UN39FH5000. It does have a PC mode- but it's the dumbest design choice I have ever seen, hidden for some reason. You have to change the input's label (which should be just a cosmetic option for ease of remembering inputs by name) to PC. This makes everything look way better, gets rid of that awful mpeg noise reduction filter and all sharpness ringing, reduces delay, and grays out almost every picture option in the menu including game mode. So all of my inputs are called "PC" because it looks better with every hdmi device I have tried.

displaylag.com rates it at 30ms which is roughly 2 frames (unsure of their methods, resolution, or mode selection), plus whatever a framemeister would add. 720p on PS3 feels very laggy, so the OSSC as a cheaper alternative doesn't seem useful unless I got a 720p set.

I could see why people think dealing with RGB and HDTVs is overkill, but it's worth it personally for me. I still prefer consoles for reasons besides quality. But I hate the whole "The only way to do it is the way I grew up" meme because that really is a personal preference, to some degree. It's almost like the PC vs. console debate in its relative objectivity and subjectivity.
>>
>>3568476
>But I hate the whole "The only way to do it is the way I grew up" meme
That's not why people use CRTs. It's because CRTs don't fuck up the image
>>
>>3568476
I like crts because it numbs my brain. When I play on a lcd I'm constantly thinking about other shit, but there is something about a crt that puts ya in a trance and you enjoy the game more. It's probably an alium conspiracy.
>>
>>3568484
>fuck up the image
Can you elaborate? If you mean "opposed to an HDTV's internal scaler", I agree. But you probably don't know what a Framemeister does in that case. If you're referring to scanlines, well, the Framemeister can simulate that look fairly well, but I honestly don't like it as much as the "emulator" look.
>>
>>3568497
Maybe it's because you don't associate LCDs with gaming. You associate it with working on a computer or watching television or something else less engaging. Regardless, it's nice to see someone admit their CRT preference is subjective.

There is an objective advantage to using a CRT. Pre 6th gen vidya graphics were designed around scanlines and dithering. I dont own a framemeister myself, so i dont know how well its able to emulate this, but i imagine thr scanlines it provides are going to look like ass on anything other than a 4K tv. CRTs also still have better black levels than any current flat panel, except maybe the newer OLED displays.
>>
>>3568605
I don't see how 240p games are designed to take use of scanlines. Dithering may work better when blurred, but I don't think that counts as objectively better since it is directly caused by an objective inferiority in image quality. As for scanline simulation, like I said, I don't really care, and I don't know too much on it.
>look like ass on anything other than a 4K tv
Framemeister maxes output at 1080. Ironically, the scanlines generated in 1080p mode are really thin and most prefer the 720p mode even on a 1080p display.
>>
>>3568641
That being said, of course there are other advantages to using a CRT, like input lag and obviously price.
>>
The thing I like best about CRTs is motion clarity. The screen stays sharp when scrolling, whereas it gets blurry when moving on HDTVs. I've heard the strobing/blank frame insertion stuff can accomplish it on HDTVs it but haven't seen it in action so don't know how well it works.
Though unless you really want to blow a 256x240 resolution image up to 60 inches, a CRT seems like a cheaper solution than a strobe-capable TV.

off topic but carpet is awful, a good quality rug over real floorboards is far superior.
>>
>>3568730
And that's even when using a quality external scaler? I heard something like that happening from cheaper external scalers made for 480i, but I've never had an issue like that with the LCD setups I've used.
>>
>>3568864
rugs might be good sure, but they aren't comfy.
too hard
>>
I know this question has probably been answered by you guys a thousand times, but what are some of the better CRT's out there? Like in terms of brands or models of brands? I got a 27" Toshiba from a garage sale for $10 a while back specifically for my NES, N64 and Genesis and am not at all happy with the screen resolution, like it's composed of hard horizontal bars. Are my eyes just spoiled by HD now? Are smaller screens simply the better way to go? I have an old 25" RCA(brand) that I was perfectly happy with but the coaxial snapped years ago(no rca hookups, was running everything through a VCR lol). Idk, maybe I'll just get it fixed, it has a ton of comfy sentimental value, covered with stickers and whatnot. I have a shit ton of old games that I really miss and this thread triggered the hell out of me. Plus, I keep talking with old friends about getting together on a Sunday to watch some football and have a Super Tecmo Bowl tournament while we're at it, I really want to make it happen
>>
>>3568879
It's nothing to do with scalers. It happens even scrolling a web page on computer. On a CRT, the image stays 100% sharp when moving.
If you don't notice how HDTVs blur when the screen is scrolling, that just means you're used to it. The difference is really obvious if you compare it to a CRT.

The blurring is actually a product of how the brain interprets what the eyes are seeing. A CRT image isn't visible the entire time; it flickers off between frames. Whereas HDTVs hold the image constant for the entire frametime and then replace it with the next frame. This latter way of doing things makes people see motion as blurred.

There are some features on some HDTVs and computer monitors that recreate the strobe effect of CRTs, called names like "LightBoost" and "ULMB."

The image I linked is from a framemeister, but it is perfect for why scanlines were a focus of 240p content.

If you look you can see the scanlines match up to where a "pixel slope" would be. Making a jagged edge seem smoother or sharper depending.

Games with text usually used the scanlines to help create finer and more identifiable text as well.
>>
>>3568501
I have and use a framemeister myself. But that tv you are using has 2+ frames of delay, and the meister adds another. Compared to a crt with .01-.10 frames of delay, there really isn't much to chew on to see the issue.

Delay and accurate quality are big reasons to use CRT.
