What's the best way to refurbish my N64 joystick?

This is a blue board which means that it's for everybody (Safe For Work content only). If you see any adult content, please report it.

I get durability, but wtf do the 'range' and 'feel' meters mean?

Oh man the steel+teflon and Lodgenet look great

>Range - Shows overall mapping range, both positive and negative deviations from the genuine new joystick standard. Green Arrow center of range.
>Feel - Subjective feeling of the joystick movement, both in terms of how close it feels/plays to an original and how much I like it generally.
>Durability - Essentially my best guess at how durable the mechanism will be, I have some experience with extended play on some aftermarket options (Hori, Lodgenet, Orig style clone) but nothing concrete on the others.

Get a new controller.

I was hoping there'd be a solution that is more robust than the default N64 sticks, which wear down quickly.

I hope to get a Hori mini pad as well, and even like the idea of spray painting a gamecube controller to have 64 coloured buttons, then get an adapter for 64. I'm not aware of new N64 controllers being sold.

Lodgenet controller owner here. Got mine modded over the summer. Feels fucking magical not having to worry about my 64 sticks and having spare minty joysticks. The buttons are also super clicky and the extra buttons on top make it a conversation piece to boot.

There are several ways to go about the mod, I personally chose to keep it as close to the original LN controller, so I used the LN controller's top shell and a normal 64 controller's bottom shell. If you go that route, be prepared for a lot of dremeling and a bit of soldering. Luckily I know a local modder so for $10 I didn't have to worry about fucking it up or learning to solder. End result is a beautiful all black controller with an essentially immortal perfect stick.

Other more work heavy methods include implanting the middle stick of the LN controller onto a retail 64 controller. Read more about it here:

Pic related, its my controller.

Refill and restore the bowl, its abrasion is responsible for the stick becoming loose as the spring loses tension, clean every residue of old plastic particles, if possible the two rails that translate the movement into a vertical and horizontal component should be replaced, if no replacement parts are available just clean them.
THen add grease to all moving parts, the reason why the sticks grind away is because they are ugreased in the first place. A good greased stick will even survive constant Mario Party use.

I'm still very confused as to what Range means. Is having it go past the green a bad thing?

Because if so, that kind of looks like a shill chart with the guy trying to shill his own stick solution over literally anything else.

not really sure either but people in that thread seem pretty excited about the steel/teflon solution. it's pretty recent too so hopefully theyre for sale soon

Yeah, I'll believe that this teflon stick thing is better than a Hori Minipad when I fucking see it.

not op, assuming it's a deadzone thing

too high range and stick pushed full doesn't translate to full movement ingame (e.g. push stick full, game registers only 80%)
too low range and full movement ingame happens before stick is pushed full (e.g. push stick only half-way and game registers as 100% already)
or vice versa on the ranges effects

If that's what it's supposed to mean, then it's completely wrong on the Hori Mini range at the very least, that thing is arguably better than a new N64 controller right out of the box.

And the GCN style sticks, as well as the Lodgenet sticks aren't that bad either.

I use raphnet-tech's GC-to-N64 controller adapter, its bit expensive but it works well.

I also have the "GC-style" replacement stick, which is OK but its too sensitive.

Where the fuck can I buy one of those Steel 64 sticks?
>>
>>3557459
that would be ideal if you could paint the buttons;
blue A button, green B button, red Start button etc.
Is that possible?
