>tfw you're a fat, ugly American, a living stereotype, and you would shame your country just by stepping foot into Akihabara
>>
>>3549096
You'd resemble everyone else foreign that's there.

Akihabara is like 95% chinese tourists now anyway so no Japanese will see you.
>>
>>3549062
Seeing those modern 2600 replacement power bricks in that picture is surreal. They didn't even change the packaging.

I love Romancia. By all means continue. Too bad we can't see the price tags.
>>
>those prices
No thanks.
>>
>>3549142
On what specifically? Nothing seems too outrageous.

Didn't buy anything but might pick up a Wonderwwan for like 500円

>>3549141
The price at the Romancia one is actually for the Framemeister, nothing too interesting.
>>
>>3549142
Yes. Now that I'm looking through everything I see that we CAN see prices and - surprise they're ebay prices - US ebay prices even

Truly I say to you, whatever you shall bind on earth shall be bound in heaven
>>
>>3549148
Yeah the only thing worth picking up at a place like Beep or Super Potato is going to be shit that's dirt common there but unusual when you bring it back. Apparently Hard Off is a bit better as they're more like Half Price Books but you gotta dig for their version of dirt malls if you want to get some real shit and you don't have time to fuck with yahoo auctions
>>
>>3549159
Super Potato is omega scam but for most things, BEEP seemed a bit reasonable. At least compared to other stores in the area.

Traders owns but the prices aren't that low (not that high either, just fair). Also there's that new Surugaya shop beside BEEP which I went to. Anything that both they and BEEP had was more expensive at Surugaya. Kind of an interesting store anyway though.
>>
>>3549062
>24800 yen for an Atari

goddaaaaaaaaaaaaamn

They'd flip if they saw US prices.
>>
>>3549148
$80 for a yellowed PC Engine?

$120 for a modified Sega Saturn controller?

I can't quite see the prices on those low-end X68000 models but i bet they're hilarious.

That's actually Surugaya and not BEEP. 12k¥ is a lot but who sells those official Sega PS2 pads for cheaper? I thought the going rate was around that if not higher.
>>
>>3549096
you already shame our country without going to Akihabara
>>
Where is a good place to import some systems cheaper then their USA counter parts?

I don't want to go though a third party really.

Would ebay work?
>>
>>3549141
What's so great about Romancia?
I played it for a bit and it was extremely cryptic. I gave up because I was just following a guide instead of figuring stuff out myself.

Pretty funny, I was considering maybe making a trip to Japan some time and picking up a few JP PCs for cheap, now I don't see any point. I can get a slightly more yellowed model shipped to me for the same price, and I don't have to go there.
>>
>>3549873
Why are computers affected by American prices?
They shouldn't be interesting for people that can't read Japanese.
>>
>>3549878
Because any that are priced below American standards just get bought up and thrown on eBay to make 50 bucks.
>>
>>3549807
The French happened.

I don't know why, but if I go into any "retro" game shop in Tokyo and there is a foreigner there, 80% chance they are French.

Weaboo culture is strong here. There is even a dedicated TV channel for it (it threatens to die every year but it's still there).

What a weird coincidence this thread, I just went to Akihabara for the first time. HEY arcade is a must visit. I saw a guy 1cc esp galuda and another guy get to the credit roll in TGM3. And I played lots of IIDX and Popn.
>>
>>3549951
Hey is pretty good. If you're still around or are going back, go to Try as well. Those are the two atypical game centres in the area.

Do Nips price gouge retro stuff? I live in New York and when I go into the city, the few stores with retro consoles/games overprice the shit out of everything. I get that they have to pay rent in a big city, but it's rarely a reasonable markup.

eBay or specialized forums are your best bet. If you're not retarded and use a sniping app you can get reasonable deals on eBay. Forum prices are a beautiful thing, but you have to actually like, 'join the community' first and sometimes you just don't want to do that.
>>
>>3550679
In 5-10 years all of this retro stuff is gonna flood the US, once the youtube/nostalgia wave passes and everyone is trying to sell all of this stuff they have no use for

Thanks for the photo dump, OP. This stuff is always fun. Didn't realize there was any sort of following for the 2600 in Japan, I figured it never caught on there in what limited release it had and nobody cared.

Tokyo resident here. Yes, Akiba has been gutted by greedy tourists and would be retro game resellers. Not like the game stores in akihabara were necessarily cheap, compared to their American counterparts they were much more reasonable... the shelves are perpetually empty during the summer time.

In the future I guess if I want to actually get a Japanese copy of a game I'm going to have to import it from abroad even though I'm from Japan. Augh.
>>
>>3553016
If I lived in Tokyo I'd just make a day trip out of going to Denden town once a month or so. It's much more reasonable there.
>>
>>3553312
Most certainly is! Akiba is just for convenience but you pay for it.
>>
>>3549074
Probably a Japanese knock off controller that works on a Sega Saturn and/or a PlayStation.
>>
Any cool shops like this in Osaka?

I need to go around and look for some Virtual On twin sticks one of these days.
>>
>>3552985
This. I've seen those PS2 Saturn pads going for over $220 on ebay.

I always wanted a couple, but sold most of my collection and took a break from gaming around the time that they first came out. Meh, what use is a stupid select button, anyway.

It looks legit to me. Imagine being cursed with hands that can only appreciate the real Sega/SLS made Sega Saturn controllers, and can feel the cheap knockoffs sold everywhere now. The Sega Saturn pad is near perfect for my non-Robot-Devil hands and I am afflicted with this curse.

>>3549038
I care, I care a lot. To me, those are very interesting pictures, and remind me how fucking broke I am. There's so much I want there, and the pictures through the power of imagination allow me to fantasize about getting some of those amazing things.

JVC made 3rd party saturn controllers?
>>
>>3553847
They were authorized to produce Sega systems as well as Aiwa (think how there are Sharp Famicom systems and Panasonic Gamecube) ... they are also known as JVC in the US.
>>
>>3553852
Ah I see, good to know.
>they are also known as JVC in the US.
I know that, JVC means Japan Victor Company, they were the Japanese Victoc subsidiary company from before RCA bought the US one (I think it's RCA), hence why it's called Victor in japan and JVC everywhere else (you ain't gonna use the name of your former mother company when it was bought by another one that's basically your competitor now).

Whoa

I use a SLS Saturn USB-pad for most of my gaming. Someone on SRK found it in a basement and sold it for $50 about five or six years ago. I was lucky enough to be searching for one at that time.

I also game with the Mayflash adapter together with a standard Saturn pad which works just as well, although a tad of a hassle to setup the first time. A fair bit cheaper too. It works with my Virtua Stick too, which is the reason I bought it.

A couple of weeks ago I got an iBUFFALO SNES-pad, and it's fucking awesome. Feels as crisp as a new original pad. Absolutely a contender for best overall retro pad. I prefer the buttons to the Saturn pad, since they are easier to slide your finger over.
The Saturns d-pad is still king though, together with its six face-buttons it still wins in the end.

Yeah, I only have a few of the official SLS USB controllers but primarily used a Mayflash adapter for use on my PC. I bought a few more Saturn controllers after I finally broke one after years (decades) of intense play (especially later on GGPO). Just makes me more cautious with my controller, and I wish my execution could match on more modern controllers like those on the Xbox which are more readily available, but my old muscle memory and aging bones have a harder time adapting and preferring other D-pads. The SNES controllers are nice too, that iBUFFALO and 8bitdo controllers are really nice looking, and I want them, but cannot afford them at this time.

>>3557010
Heh, I figured it was in good jest. You sure do know your controllers to spot an Ascii controller masquerading as a Saturn controller.

As for pic, I never did take any pictures inside of any Japanese stores, always felt it was not allowed or at least looked down upon, so I never did. So instead a picture of what it feels like looking at OP's pics.
