I was all with you until you mentioned FF7. FF7 is alright, maybe even great, but it has a lot of easily noticeable flaws. Sluggish story, lack of connection between materia choices and character strengths in story (Barret is now a healer cuz materia, lol), and lengthy, repetitive battles.

Yeah that's why I was saying maybe. Like it's an incredibly iconic atmospheric game and has pretty good gameplay underneath but I can't think of many RPGs of that style that I would put above it in terms of story, setting, sound & gameplay.

I quite liked the materia system, it fits into the story well, it might break your immersion a little (Garrett healer) but I like that you can tweak your squad with it whether that makes it deep or a facade of depth I don't really know.

Ooh what about Theif: Gold?

Maybe it's only a 9/10 not GOAT/10, can't decide.

Haha. I did say strictly, and I am referring to a time period when I say this.

A lot of their games are still designed to be difficult when played certain ways, but that's a different conversation for another board.

The fact is Zelda 1 is a survival game at its core, and it can be pretty unforgiving. Even with a guide, you must be prepared for combat and ambushes based on poor position, which takes practice.
