How about thing?
>>
What thing?
>>
NOT RETRO

But I'm playing through SMTIVA right now and it's amazing.
>>
>>3527939
Too much friendship. Not one, but two (2) girls in the party want MC's dick. The gameplay is good but there's too much of a tonal shift.
>>
>>3528061
Definite tonal shift, but I think it's for the better. SMTIV had such bland characters and really poor plot progression. This just feels more character-driven and engaging.

So what're the definitive version of the classic SMT games? The PS1 versions of I, II, and If... seem like they're the best.
>>
>>3529729
They are, and they'll probably never get translated, sadly.

I think people just don't know how to handle the MIPS processor in the PS1.

Either way, I'm playing MT2 on KMT now and holy fuck it's really tedious and confusing.

>>3529785

I tried to make it through KMT but its sure a brutal slog. The big problem I ran into was it turned into a sheer time issue. Very little of the things you want to do in the game can be accomplished quickly.

About 2/3 of the way through MT1 real life interfered and I just dropped the game.

I wouldn't mind going and playing SMT 1 and 2 though. Fuck those people who are all like "those games are too old, play persona 4 instead!" Starting this series at the beginning is a way more interesting way to go through it.
>>
>>3529796
I actually loved MT1 though.

The only bad parts were Mazurka and Infini, which lasted fucking forever.
>>
>>3529797
Oh and Lucifer was disappointingly easy. At least he has a great theme.
>>
>>3529797

Maybe I'll go back and give it another shot. I'm just terrified because I made so much progress and if I load the save I'll have no idea what I was doing.
>>
>>3529806
It's pretty hard to get lost. The goal to all the dungeons are pretty much "find item, kill tyrant"
>>
>>3529785
I loved KMT version of MT2, everything felt just right to me.
Fuck the first one, though.

>>3529796
Try dropping 1 and go straight to 2, bonuses you get in 2 for beating 1 are nice but not really worth the pain.
>>
>>3529785
>>3529796
>>3530052
You should play the Famicom version of MT2 instead of the Snes one

It sounds great but looks and plays pretty bad.

>>
>>3532456
Just play it on the SNES
>>
>>3532456
i'd rather have a translation of the PS1 version with its full 3D dungeons that don't feel like shit to navigate

the entire SNES trilogy is on there too
>>
>>3529729
The PS1 version of SMTII is supposedly riddled with horrible bugs.
>>
>>3532547
That's par for the course for early Atlus games.

The original version of Megami Tensei II had a pretty serious oversight where if you died with a cursed weapon equipped, the status effect would disappear but you'd still be stuck with the weapon and your health would still drain, making it uncurable.
>>
>>3532547
There are apparently two versions of the PS1 release. They put out an updated version with bug fixes, or something.
>>
Alright, why the hell nobody made a translation patch for PS1 versions of SMTs?
>>
>>3532709
Not a lot of people out there who understand the PS1 architecture.
>>
>>3532709
There's plenty of games in the series left untranslated, why bother with making translations for multiple versions of the same game?
>>
SMT is pretty cool. I'm pretty traumatized by the final dungeon, though. I spent about 6 hours mapping it out before I eventually just said "fuck it" and followed a guide. The encounter rate combined with the waves of battles combined with it being big enough to consist of a quarter of the game was too much for me. It was definitely one of the cooler JRPGs I've played on the SNES though.

Everybody says SMTII is better, but I just can't get interested in it, I've never played much further than a few hours in. SMTI's setting drew me in right away.

I started learning Japanese back when agtp made their last update on if... progress and finished the PS1 version couple of months ago.
About to play Devil Summoner.
>>
>>3532832
Well, for SMT1 translation is fully done already, so it's a matter of making it available in the form of the best looking port (3D dungeons look sexy). Real shame that PS1 architecture is so fucked up that it's not an easy task.
Other games require additional work of a translator, though.
>>
>>3533026
SMT If and Devil Summoner had their scripts done for years, it's a matter of someone hacking the fucking thing to put the text in as well.

Honestly I'm fine with SMT1 not getting a fan translation, the game already has a translation for Super Famicom (which is not a bad version at all), and even an official translation for iOS (not the best platform, but it's not that bad since it's a turn based game).

I'd rather get translations for games that aren't available in english period, like Devil Summoner 1, SMT if, etc.
>>
>>3533038
>>3533030
I've heard about if... project and that it's basically dead now, but had somebody even started hacking PSP version of DS?
>>
How is Soul Hackers? Nobody ever talks about Soul Hackers, it's always persona or devil survival, devil summoner sometimes, but never Soul Hackers.

Soul Hackers is the second game on the Devil Summoner sub-series, and a fan-favorite in Japan.

It's pretty good and has a brutal ultimate boss fight on the 3DS version.
>>
>>3533082
Gameplay is great, probably my favorite from the 90s megaten, but the main game is very short and easy.

So how much influence did Wizardry IV have on this series exactly? Because both have demon summoning as an important mechanic despite coming out the same year, it's a pretty strange coincidence.
>>
>>3527316
>The SNES original (AKA the worst version of SMT) is translated
>The GBA version isn't

Suffering.
>>
>>3534150
Megami Tensei got the demon summoning thing from the Digital Devil Story novel that came out in 1986, and Werdna didn't even come out in Japan until 1988, I highly doubt there's much overlap.
>>
>>3534160
yeah and the SNES translation has some pretty ugly parts about it, since it came out in 2002 (overlapping characters in the shop menu comes to mind)

it's pretty good, but it could be better
>>
>>3534160

SNES version is perfectly fine gameplaywise and there's a patch-on-patch floating around that improves AGTP's to make it less buggy and clean up the translation. It's also one of the coolest and moodiest games in the series.
>>
>>3534189
>>3534198
It's a perfectly serviceable SMT expeprience. I just wish someone would get around to translating the GBA port/remake/whatever you wanna call it.
>>
>>3534232
>GBA
Why not PSX then?

Also as I recall there's official translation of SMT1 on IOS that was based on GBA version.

Speaking of mobile versions, does anyone have a android apk for japanese SMT1 and 2?
>>
>>3532524
SNES version is probably the worse version of the game. And I've already played it and don't want to put up with it anymore.

>>
>>3534702
A bloo bloo bloo, SNES babby. There are loads of other versions of SMT that came out on systems pre-6th gen. All of which are better than the SNES original.
>>
>>3534816

>SNES baby

here we go again with console wars.

SMT didn't even come out for SNES, only Super Famicom.

Anyway, what makes the CD versions of it better? For one, I like having no loading times.
>>
>>3534818
>SMT didn't even come out for SNES, only Super Famicom.

Not this shit again.
>>
>>3534841

What shit again? SNES fanboys won't be able to nostalgia over SMT because it wasn't part of their childhood.
I don't think anyone here has any childhood attachment to SMT unless they lived in Japan.

Which is why SMT threads have generally no console war bullshit (at least here on /vr/, n /v/ they have their Sony vs Nintendo/Persona vs SMT wars)
>>
>>3534847
>I don't think anyone here has any childhood attachment to SMT unless they lived in Japan.
I was like 11 when I first played it.
I didn't get it back then but I guess some smarter kid theoretically would.
>>
>>3534854

Emulation I assume.
>>
>>3534864
Well, yeah, just saying the translation patch is old enough for nostalgia.
>>
>>3534870

I guess you're right, I was already a young adult by 2002 so I have a different concept of time.
>>
>>3534702
It IS the worst version of the game, though. I don't have a hardon for experiencing the original. I have a hardon for experiencing what's better. It's why you won't catch me playing the original Famicom version of Dragon Quest with the passwords.
>>
>>3535620

But what makes it the worst version?

Pretty sure SMT on SFC has a save feature, right? Plus no load times.
>>
>>3535684
It's just not as polished by virtue of being the first MT on SNES.

Even KMT has more polish.
>>
>>3535684
The only really bad thing I can remember about the original SMT is that opening the map is a pain in the ass.
And that's it written all in kana but that's not a problem for people playing with english patch.

>>
>>3529785
MTII is easily one of the best games in the entire series, I loved it when I played thorough KMT.
>>3530879
Agreed completely. I patched a ROM with the unfinished translation, but I haven't booted it up on my Famicom yet.
>>3533085
Final boss in SH made me feel like a bitch. I accidentally saved in the final area and I was missing armor. I had to lower the difficulty to finish the game or be stuck there forever. Still need to replay it for reals.

There's a great guide on GameFAQs, just look up that one part if you're trying to go through it blind.

>I accidentally saved in the final area and I was missing armor. I had to lower the difficulty to finish the game or be stuck there forever. Still need to replay it for reals.

The ultimate final boss isn't the final boss on the main game though, but the one from the extra dungeon (which you can access once you beat Belzeebub on the post-game).
You have to fight Kyoji from the first Devil Summoner, and then both Raidou Kuzunohas, and then finally comes the ultimate boss which is 1000x times harder than Manitou
>>
>>3541110
Jesus, yeah it's not an easy game in general but that's fucking brutal. I feel like even more of a bitch now.
