Star control thread?
Explorin', Minin', Tradin', Warin'
Playing for the first time, just met the pkunk. Looking for biological data to trade with currently.

If it's his first time playing, it's probably going to take him a while before he can even easily locate and get to the rainbow worlds and back, stunning aliens is worth it until then I'd say; there are enough of them around in the early systems to make it worthwhile, to a point.
>>
any tips on leaving star systems with a bunch of ships waiting for you. I can't get out of the Pkunk homeworld system without being jumped by ilwrath
>>
Is there an ideal system to play this on? I hear it's got a great 3DO port, and I do have a 3DO in need of some lovin'.
>>
>>3517728

I believe you need to consider your ship upgrades carefully. Turning thrusters and main engines will enable you to avoid fights in hyperspace by outrunning other ships.
>>
>>3517810
There was 13 Ilwrath hovering on the system as soon as i left. I just gave up and loaded an old save.
>>
>>3517740

The 3DO version is indeed fantastic, with hundreds of hours of new music, voice acting and enhancements.

However the full 3DO game content was made open source (by the grace of God) and you can download a perfect PC port for free - "The Ur-Quan Masters" (they weren't allowed to use the trademarked name Star Control. I find it hard to believe you were not aware of this... There is even a free Android / iOS version.

>dweeb

Without giving too much away, there is stuff you can do in game - a "quest", if you like - that will affect the Ilwrath's sphere of activity
>>
>>3517095

My advice is to avoid spoilers like the plague. The game has a fucking fantastic plot, and your actions in the game can greatly influence the fate of entire races.

There is a timed element to it. Certain things will happen after a period of time. Stuff you do in-game can lengthen the time before things happen.

You should also play a bit of Star Control on Genesis, by emulation. It's a fun little game.

I'm serious about avoiding spoilers
You should probably stay away from this thread.
>>
>>3517824
I'll try again when I have ships other then the spatti and pkunk ones.
>>
>>3517095

This sounds like a really obvious thing to say but... Talk to everyone, follow up every lead, investigate the slightest hint there might be something up in a star system.
>>
>>3517836
Avoid spoilers. this.

Game is fantastic, and you will be sad when it's over. Don't let it end quickly.

Ship dodging advice:
I think it's in the manual that some planets have infinite ships defending them. This is shown by lines of ships converging on the planet in the encounter scanner. You cannot win these fights. You need to converse or run away in combat.
Running away in combat:
To escape, the flagship MUST hyperspace away by using 'esc' during combat. If you are capable, then kill one ship, as soon as it explodes, push esc to start the warp out. This gives you extra time to avoid damage. If you still take significant damage in normal combat, either through your skill, or through bad upgrades on your mothership, then it might be worth it to just escape as soon as possible, but the enemy is going to fly up to you and start ripping you to pieces.
After you have ended a combat, you won't be able to start a new encounter for a few moments, so you can escape from pursuing ships.

If your flagship upgrades put you slower than an ilwrath, you probably just shouldn't go there yet.

Enemy behavior in start system

After the enemy notice you, they will converge on you from all over the system. If you are in their sphere of influence, you will also get ships trickling into the start system from hyperspace. You might need to evade encounters while accomplishing an objective, or plow through them and pick up some credits, depending on how strong you are at combat.
Spathi are actually incredible ships, though they are weak against ilwrath. they do very well against almost everything else. Play around in super melee.
>>
Depending on your level of feelings about save scumming...

Just save and then go out on an exploration mission. If it's good, fine. If not, reload.

The planets are all random but this was done when the game was made and so they're the same every game. I recommend writing down the planets you visit and score them on wealth and difficulty.

Also, write down all the little tidbits you hear when you talk to people.

Finally, keep conversing with friendlies (and enemies when you can safely destroy them) until they stop saying new things. Visit them every now and then too.
>>
Favourite ship / species?

I liked the Mmrnmhrn X-form the best, but as I remember, you can only use them in Super Melee, they can't actually be found and used in the main game.

They were of course available in the first Star Control game, which I recommend you should all play (by Genesis emulation). It has a simple but quite fun strategy / campaign mode.
>>
After dragging my heels until just this weekend to play No Man's Sky, I was struck by how similar it is to pic related. So comfy.

melee-wise, the cruiser's good for its cost. starcon 2 version is speedier and more maneuverable than the first game (and it's even better in starcon 3, but ultimately nothing compared to the bullshittery of many other ships in that game).

as for species though, always partial to the supox. the blade can be difficult to control but had potential.

I couldn't stand the genesis version because of slowdown/low FPS.

Anyone want to explain what's the deal with Star Control 3?

Is it un-redeemable shit?

Is it non-canon? If so, why were the original team not involved?
>>
>>3523494
It's non-canon and kind of a bad game. I still think it's worth playing if you love sc2. You will find a lot of faults and the gameplay is a lot worse but it attempts to finish the story of the precursors.

I determined against the computer and my skill level the balance is almost perfect.

I can kill a chmmr with three zoq fots or shofixti... the point value of the ships is fucking uncanny and should be impossible with the drastic ability differences with special moves, but it just works.

Mmrnmhrn is still the most broken to me. Owns almost anything but a chmmr, utwig, spathi, or pkunk

And it will probably give any of those a bloody nose.

Playing against the hardest AI, the trick to get through it is by cheesing with low damage shots and let it drain out.

Star Control 3 managed to make an even cheaper ship.

How important are the tech upgrades from the Melnorme? I'm having a pretty hard time finding planets with life that don't also feature outrageous tectonics/weather/temperature and kill my landers in a couple of seconds.
>>
>>3528672
The Melnorme upgrades protect your landers from those things (as well as give you other stuff too, like increased lander speed, increased lander capacity, and I think a couple things for your flagship which come in handy too), so you kinda answered your own question.

It's entirely possible to get through the game without any of them, but they make things a lot easier and faster in the long run.

Without them your flagship is pretty much dependent on its escorts in combat.

Once you've bought all the Melnorme upgrades you can turn the flagship into a rape machine that can singlehandedly plow through hordes of dreadnoughts. It kinda takes the challenge out of the game 2bh.

I don't know about how the combat was in the original version, but this is fucking absurd. The bastards can juggle their shields to reflect approaching Orz marines, do an instant 180 and shoot them out of the sky. I don't even know how I can fight them without just taking the flagship and just charging straight at them while tanking the crew losses. Torps are useless, marines are useless, close combat craft is not even worth mentioning against AI's godly fucking reflexes and aim. Is there something that hard counters them?

>>
this game would be on my favorites list if it weren't for the arcade battles. i fucking sucked at them and it ruined the game for me. unwilling to train myself tactically for a game that should be strategic in scope. turned based operational battles would have made this one of the best games ever made.
>>
>>3535569
Those battles are usually decided on the strategical layer though. You choose a ship that counters the enemy ship and the rest is just a formality. Pick the wrong ship and get inconvenienced.
The game doesn't really explain what the ships do though, expecting you to test them out in super melee. That can be considered a flaw.
>>
>>3535575
And if you pick the right ships you can let the AI handle it with the auto-battle option.
>>
>>3535580
I'm guessing you can't autobattle the finale though.

I was a scrub, I just spammed Avatars and finished with my suped-up flagship.
>>
>>3535575

the ilwrath would just run up on me in hyperspace and fuck my shit up.
thats the reason i dropped it.
just fucking around in super melee i would lose every battle against an average AI even with superior ships.
i'm just not cut out for arcade game play.
>>
>>3535569
>>3535630
These are really weak complaints considering that you can still mod your ship to outrun pretty much every other ship in hyperspace (as well as plot courses that aren't going to take you through enemy space), and/or turn it into a fucking powerhouse that can just sit there and spam weapons, and/or just fucking run away. Outside the Slylandro Probes in the first part of the game and a small handful of plot-required battles, you barely have to actually fight at all.
>>
>>3535630
Focus on upgrading your flagship's mobility first, no one except slylandro probes will be able to catch you unless you let them.
Why were you even going to Ilwrath space that much? I presume you died to them more than once. There isn't much to do down there other than taking ships from Pkunk (in the early game at least).
I don't think I even fought an Ilwrath ship other than the tutorial one during my first full playthrough.

October of the 8th year I think they are done by December you're probably in the early months of that year.

You could ride through and enjoy the loss or try and pull out a win. As species die they unlock the stuff you need to win. I don't think this works for the chmmr, I think they finish off the humans before you can get back to earth and finish the game.[/spoilers]
>>
>>3535147

Yes, if by star map you mean the rotating DNA looking 3D map showing stars and the hyperspace jumps between them. It's a simple strategy game, you can build mines and forts and manufacture ships, there are different campaign scenarios, and best of all, you can find precursor relics to soup up your ships.

The amount of thought-out details in this game is amazing.

I would be watching any modern/recent Blind Let's Play of this game right now.

You! Yes, you.
If you are reading this and have no clue what this game is, record yourself while playing this and entertain me please. It'll give me the vibe that I'm playing it for the first time again.

Wut

Kicking 18 flavours of shit out of arrogant Kohr-Ahr and Ur-Quan is one of the big draws of the endgame

You know, being able to kill any other ship in a second while having 200 crew to their 40 or so at best. I feel like battles between escorts are just more fun and evenly matched, there is actually some tension and strategy. I'm not saying it's the only right way to enjoy the game, but that's how I like it.

the ilwrath won't kill them, unless you also send them against the kohr-ah.

I got through 2 playthroughs so far, in first I sent ilwrath against thraddash before even contacting them and when I came for aqua helix there was no one there guarding it.
In second I made Thraddash join my alliance and then sent Ilwrath against them. They destroyed each other once more.

Maybe I misremeber I also think you van use the caster on the ilwrath again to call them back too and just have them go back and forth on the map if you really want.

Well, whatever. You can't keep the alliance with Thraddash anyway, gotta steal that helix. I wonder why devs gave them such a shit deal, they aren't nearly as despicable as Ilwrath.
