The latest DF Retro episode really got me in the mood to play some MechWarrior 2. It's been ages.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=87tvXIIMJes

So far it's still great. I got it running in DOSBox and MechWM as well witouth much trouble. I personally prefer the untextured shader-based look of the original DOS game over the later, textured releases. Those vibrant colors really give it an atmosphere that is absent in most other versions.

Unfortunately I don't own an original copy anymore and that's really the problem here. Becasue there are so many editions of this game. HOLY SHIT!

There are versions for every graphics accelerator of the time, Win95 & DOS, Win95 only, soundtrack or not, expansion pack bundles, multi- and singleplayer, campaign only, the list goes on... it's crazy!

Not one (pirated) copy I could get my hands on today had the soundtrack. And on Amazon it's not entirely clear either which versions are being offered by the individual sellers either. They're seemingly unaware of such issues. I got some nice MT-32 MIDI music going on in the clan halls and menus, but nothing during missions sadly. One version even had the MP3s packed in but no in-game music.

Doesn't matter, let's have a MechWarrior 2 thread and talk about this abandoned series - how great it once was and how fun NetMech was and how, like always, Microsoft fucked it all up for everyone with their stupid MechAssault games.

To close it out, here's an overview of the different releases and what they offer:

I have the ATI RAGE edition. I haven't played it since the 90s. As I remember, it had a great ambient techno soundtrack.

Oh yeah, the soundtrack is really good:

It adds a lot to the experience. I spent too much time today trying to find a version that has it. I'll probably end up rebuying a copy via Amazon.

And to be clear, I don' think that link in the OP even mentions all the versions out there.

As for your verison:
>ATI 3D RAGE Edition

>PROS
>It looks great.
>Damage is the same as the origional.

>CONS
>Not emulatable, therefore you must have the origional hardware or an ATI card with the capability to run ATI Rage software.
>Not playable online without kali.

Pic related is seemingly the one to get.

Open your iso in poweriso or something and check if the soundtrack is actually missing. Might be a problem with your setup instead. Here's mine, all the audio tracks are there.

Wow, that video took some effort to make. Good stuff, very interesting. Thanks for posting it.

I'm really not sure how you mount or open your image to show up like that. Mine looks like this.

Well, I saw that. Didn't think much of it at first though. Now that I did it myself, it actually revealed more information than the other program. See pic related. Guess it IS missing. Bummer

One of you opened the CD audio layer and the other opened the data layer, I think. Use a program that knows how to see CD audio.
>>
>>3496498
I have no idea how though. We both are using IsoBuster and I don't see an option to treat the image any other way.
>>
>>3496525
Well, heres mine but I dont know if it'll work with yours cause its the windows version.

I've never actually played the dos version myself. I play the 3dfx version on my retro 98 rig with voodoo 2. PC CRT really helps the graphics, since that version is stuck at 640x480.
>>
>>3496546
That's nice of you. I'll try to get it running out of curiosity alone.

But I will also try to hunt down a retail copy however.

I just downloaded the 644mb iso from here, it has the soundtrack, and its the dos version.

Alcohol 120 is a bit of a bloat, but it works 100% including getting CD audio to work in games like Half-Life and Wipeout XL (and a whole lot more).

OP here,
I haven't gone so far as to actually use older hardware yet myself, but I'd be lying if I said I wasn't tempted to get a MIDI synthesizer module in the past. In the past I used to carelessly toss out old hardware upon upgrading. Never again.
>>
>>3496607
The site always gives me a 404 error unfortunately. Can you give me a direct link to the file? I can download it with wget then. Just a link. That would be awesome. I don't know why it doesn't work for me.
>>
>>3496625
Nevermind, browser settings to strict. Had referers turned off. I should've guessed it. Thanks though.
>>
>>3496607
Yup, that one indeed works. Music and all. Thanks a buch.
