It was kinda garbage mechanically speaking, but it had a nice story, setting and characters, Arc 2 graphics are also pretty great, gorgeous old school 2d and tons of really nice animations.
Narrative wise it was much better than a lot of RPGs of the time for the console, but all the rest bar graphics and some music was pretty bad.

Series went to shit after Arc 2, Arc 3 was lackluster compared to 2 since the only driving force of the game was the story and the amount of content, and 3 was bad on both aspects, then the PS2 game was so bad it completely killed off the franchise.

Arc the Lad is basically a tech demo. I'll forgive its flaws. Arc 2 was one of my favourite games ever. It's fun and I really enjoyed the monster gimmick even thought it's useless as hell.

Well, you can use them on Arc Arena to get some neat items for Arc 2, besides, some monsters are pretty fun to use and it's imperative to have some of them during her arc, especially if you didn't import Arc 1 data for some reason, Gogen is pretty strong but he can't carry Liza alone, even less so without import data.

The problem with monsters is that they can't equip Armor, if they did they most of them would be actually very useful, see the Golem/Ninja/Grim Reaper line, but it was a fun sort of minigame anyway, I just wish Liza's tame rates weren't so goddamn low, it takes forever to get some of them.
