For the Frog the Bell Tolls. Dumb little game with a childrens book level story that I for some reason find really charming.

(I would say Metroid 2, but really you should just play AM2R at this point.)

solar striker - my first shmup. still fun to play. great example of building a game around the constraints of its hardware
nemesis II/gradius something - another surprisingly good shmup
qix - decent port, and you can turn off that god awful sound
dexterity - mendel's palace but fun
super mario land - more fun than the second game, imo

I set up retroarch with no intro sets and I had no idea what gameboy game to ay that I haven't played to death already like Link's awakening or Pokemon or dragon quest monsters

I don't think anyone ever mentions this besides me, but I always enjoy X.
It's an japanese only 3d flight sim for the gameboy.

The game consists on alternating warp tunnel race segments and open fields where you have to complete some objective, usually collect all the power crystals or capture the base.

If you've ever played X-scape, the DSi sequel, you'll enjoy X.
