Let's have a good time posting those feel-good animations and pixel gifs that put a smile on our faces

i haven't played a TMNT game in at least a decade so i don't remember which gifs are from which game but a couple of their games have really fun and well excecuted animations (never found a gif of the foot stomping damage animation)

"retro" refers more to a specific style of game that came out in that time period, not just the time period. as a lot of people have pointed out, the Dreamcast overlapped the Xbox and PS2 life cycles. the Dreamcast is more of the "retro" system, however.
I do agree that the GBA should be considered fit for the board. as stated before, it is a lot more like a portable SNES, than a contemporary of the Xbox and PS2 and their annualized sequels, multi-platform releases, 50+ million dollar budgets, and prominent online features
I can't help but notice that most of these animated gifs are roughly the same size. Who makes them?
>>3490712
isn't this the first game to include cutscenes? Ninja Gaiden was a total ball buster, but the awesome cutscenes made it worth it. I have still never beaten that game. it only beats me

>"retro" refers more to a specific style of game that came out in that time period, not just the time period.
Bullshit. But even if that were true, GBA wouldn't fit since many of it's games have clearly 2000's era game design. Graphically they're similar to SNES but that's it.
It should still get included here eventually, but for the same reason PS2 and Xbox should.

hell you don't have an analog stick and just 2 face button, you hand a beautiful GBA to a current 13 year old and he would laugh it off.
it may seem like yesterday to you but the mid-2000 happened a decade ago, that's 10 years and thousands of games later, it's objectively retro.

There's way more to game design than just 2D graphics and two buttons. Games like Golden Sun and Jedi Power Battles are distinctly different from 16 bit games that looked similar on the surface. Same with Shovel Knight. Looks superficially 8 bit, but game design is clearly not.
That's not a bad thing, it's just pointing out that game design changes over time.
>that's 10 years and thousands of games later, it's objectively retro.
Not objectively retro, because that's not what retro means. Objectively old perhaps, and I do agree it should be included on this board sooner or later for that reason. But I think the exact same thing about PS2 and Xbox.
>>3492254
>>3492254
GBA is at the very least in a limbo between really retro and PS2 and Xbox, i think the original DS is the correct equivalent to Xbox and PS2. Handhelds are just dephased (sorry, don't know how to put it). It's clear than the GB is NES while the GBA the SNES.
poor people outside the 1st world still could have PS2s and Xbox, or at the very least young kids that got it from older brothers, the DS is in that situation too. but the GBA is a console that's ONLY used in retro gaming, if not you have mobile now. noone plays it not to have an oldschool or nostalgic experience.
there's more than graphics and buttons to game design of course. but everything else is "dated" too, 80% of the GBA library is soooo slow paced compared to late 2000 era and foward for example, there weren't postmodern play on genre expectations or even gimmick mechanics to fresh things up. GBA games were console games of the era but with less graphics and shorter in length.
leaving pokemon out you couldn't make anyone younger than 16 play GBA games, not even on an emulator on their tablet, no way.

>>3492276
>GBA is at the very least in a limbo between really retro and PS2 and Xbox, i think the original DS is the correct equivalent to Xbox and PS2.
That's because you're only looking at processing power, not game design which is really what's important.
>but the GBA is a console that's ONLY used in retro gaming
This is simply untrue.
>leaving pokemon out you couldn't make anyone younger than 16 play GBA games, not even on an emulator on their tablet, no way.
As is this.
>>3493583
i live in a third world country and the only people i know who plays GBA are retro gamers. poor people have at least a smartphone so they use that, kids with older sibling's consoles have either a playstation 2 or a Xbox360, PS3 maybe.
i also buy and sell some GBA and DS stuff every now and then and i've NEVER knew or talked to a person who used or wanted a GBA for other reasons than to play something old and retro, either for nostalgia or they never played the Megaman Zero series or whatever.
but maybe that's untrue in the US or Europe, I just asumed that if this is the case in this shitty country it wouldn't be possible than in the first world people do differently.
and i wasn't just looking at the hardware (although hardware limitations shape a good part of game design) but the GBA games were still games they did before the GBA but this time on a handheld. than and platformers, which later weren't the mayority of games in the DS and were considered pretty not mainstream and almost obsolete on the big stage until the retro revival of indie games and so on.
let's continue the debate, don't just stay in "not true"! at least to me it's an interesting thing to discuss. care to share some examples of modern mechanics or at least not oldschool mechanics and gameplay bits that were new for the time? i asked because i honestly can't think of any hahaha but i'm sure there are some at least.

I mean, on one hand I agree because it's old as fuck, but it's 6th gen, post 2000 and has design sensibilities to match in a lot of its games.
It's also far from "literally" a portable SNES though the visuals might reflect it. Lower resolution, weaker audio. MUCH faster and generalized CPU. Architecture is much different.

For an 8-bit system, the Game Boy was actually super powerful, especially compared to the NES. It doesn't seem like it because of the lack of color (and fyi sprites/background tiles still have the same *number* of colors each, at 2 bits), but the difference in processing power was positively huge, and had less severe limits on both RAM and sprites per line.

>An instruction set, or instruction set architecture (ISA), is the part of the computer architecture related to programming, including the native data types, instructions, registers, addressing modes, memory architecture, interrupt and exception handling, and external I/O. An ISA includes a specification of the set of opcodes (machine language), and the native commands implemented by a particular processor.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microarchitecture
>In electronics engineering and computer engineering, microarchitecture, also called computer organization and sometimes abbreviated as µarch or uarch, is the way a given instruction set architecture (ISA) is implemented in a particular processor.[1] A given ISA may be implemented with different microarchitectures;[2][3] implementations may vary due to different goals of a given design or due to shifts in technology.

The MIPSIII(Used in the R4000 - PSP) architecture is fully backwards compatible with MIPSI and II(used in PSX). There is no need for emulating the psx cpu on the psp.

>MIPSIII

>The PSP's main microprocessor is a multifunction device named "Allegrex" that includes a 32-bit MIPS32 R4k-based CPU
I will admit misreading "r4k" as being the same as "r4000". They are actually distinct architectures. Your point of the instruction set employed by the PSP being inclusive of that employed by the PSX is correct, however...
>no need for emulating the psx cpu on the psp
...is still not true. There is still a difference between instruction set architecture and microarchitecture. You can use Google to learn more.

Learn some history, anon. Hitler did a lot for Germany before going into war.
Stop reading official propaganda.
Not even defending what he did on the war, but before WWII, Hitler was based to German people.

it's not unusual for a pixel art or retro animation thread to become a metal slug thread, it's just super cool and awesome.
