Can we talk about this publisher/developer? Ocean was one of the more prolific companies back in the day, yet I've never seen /vr/ discuss them.

Best home port of Donkey Kong was Ocean's on the C64.

Probably the best thing about this company.
>>
>>3484487
They mostly shat out really awful licensed games, that's why.
>>
>>3484804
This. I'm most familiar with their C64 output. They published some terrific stuff, but holy christ Ye pumped out some real turds too. Especially some of their arcade conversions (WEC Lemans, Chase HQ)
>>
I want to say that Ocean was bought out by The Software Toolworks?

I have Software Toolworks compilation pack that includes some Ocean games including Push-Over and Robocop 3.

Good dev from the bleeding edge days of PC gaming. Right before it blew up with DOOM and Myst.

So how does Ocean stack up against, say, LJN?
>>
There's nothing to discuss. A shite crapware developer that produced unplayable licenced games made by chimpanzees.
>>
They were shovelware devs who got big licenses and talented composers to cover up for the fact that their hastily made games sucked.

They had some really talented musicians

What makes it better than the Famicom port, or even the Coleco Vision port?

best home port of DK was on Donkey kong 64, but that came out many years later

Completely Agree.

Don't want to sound like a shill, but Kim Justice did a great retrospective on the company. The guy's voice is annoying as fuck but once you get past that, it very insightful - especially if you were around at the time.

>tfw I've already been following Kim for like a year

Once you get over >dat voice it's really insightful stuff, unless of course there's a 'talking to the camera' segment where you'll be distracted by him looking like a drag queen Guru Larry.
>>
>>3486152
As a general rule, any youtubers who feel they need to put themselves on cam are usually not worth watching (of course there's a few exceptions but not many).

Thankfully, Kim doesn't put his, quite frankly, alarming face on cam that much.

Conveyors (the "cement factory" level) wasn't missing in the C64 versions like it was on the NES version.

The Coleco port isn't even close. Conveyors is missing from the game altogether (same as NES), Elevators doesn't have the springboards/jackhammers (so it puts an extra foxfire on the top of the map to compensate), and Girders and Rivets are both shrunk to fit the tv screen by removing levels (and the foxfires on Rivets move super fast act very aggressive).

The best home ports are, in this order:
1. Ocean's C64 port (faithfully recreates gameplay, a bit slow and blocky graphics though)
2. Atari's own 400/800 port (comes kinda close to recreating gameplay)
3. Atari's C64 port (same as above, nicer graphics, worse controls by a mile)
4. TI-99 port (faithfully recreates graphics, sound and controls are off)
5. NES port (faithfully recreates graphics, sounds, controls, but missing a level)

Ocean France made some of the best arcade to Amiga ports, sadly, many of them weren't released.

Q. I believe Liquid Kids had to be created from the ground up as you weren't given access to the coin-op's source code. It often appeared that arcade game developers went out of their way to be awkward by not providing any sort of support once the license to convert a game had been granted. Why do you think that was?

A. We've always ported arcade games onto Amiga without any outside help.

They were sort of like the British version of US Gold. If US Gold wasn't British as well.
>>
>>3484487

They made lots of NES, Genesis, and SNES games based on tv and movies. Many were shit.
>>
I'm only familiar with their Addams Family games, which were...okay.
