How well do projectors handle analog video signals? Are they suitable for gaming? Is there any advantage to getting a projector from the era instead of using a modern one with VGA input? My PVM doesn't cut it for multiplayer and bigger CRTs are too expensive and/or heavy.
>>
All the same advantages of other CRTs over fixed resolution digital light projectors which is what I presume you mean by "modern one"
>>
Don't they ghost and lag a lot? Maybe that was only a problem years ago.
>>
>>3482636
I'm not extremely knowledegable on projector technology. Are CRT projectors like in the picture the only true analog video projectors, or were the ones commonly used in classrooms in the late 90s/early 00s also analog?

>he won't break his back trying to lift a sony trinitron for the sake of glorious retro multiplayer

Digital ones? Nah I've never had ghosting but their upscalers can be shitty and/or slow if you feed them interlaced video. Some see 240p correctly and others don't. Basically the same as an HDTV of similar age.
>>
>>3482649
Forgot to mention how much space they take up. Unless you live on a farm or something the space you sacrifice for a TV over 30 inches is pretty significant.
>>
>>3482648
Only crt projectors like in your op are truly analog. Compact projectors just shine a very bright light through a transparent LCD and then a lens.
>>
>>3482631
My brother and I used to have an HDMI projector as our dedicated setup.

Don't waste your time.

Projectors require perfect circumstances to look good.

Once our bulb burned out we swapped to an HDTV because honestly, it's better.

If you're playing multiplayer, just take the hit and play on an HDTV honestly. Your friends don't give a shit what TV they play on, and they won't notice the input lag if there is any (and if there is, you all have it so it's still balanced)

My 2 cents. Projectors are a waste of time and money unless you have fucking movie theater conditions in your house.

CRT projectors demand much more space than a 30" CRT
>>
>>3482660
My older consoles actually look much better than I expected on my HDTV, but I'm running out of room for my consoles and have been contemplating having a separate setup for retro consoles only.
>>
>>3482631
Don't use CRT projectors for videogames anon. These are prone to easy burn-ins compared to your average CRT TV/monitor.
>>
>>3482657
Only a retard would buy a CRT that's over 30 fucking inches.
>>
>>3482804
Hence why I want to use a projector.
>>
>>3482804
t. 8" pvm user.
>>
>>3482778
Yeah this.
Plus replacing the lamp would probabky cost you an arm and a leg. Assuming you can still find one.
>>
>>3482903
>lamp
You'd be looking to replace entire CRTs in this case, no lamps are involved at all.
>>
>>3482631
Your friends probably aren't going to care as much about picture quality as you. Input lag is a different story, which is why an LCD would be inadvisable. My advice? Get an old bigass CRT TV. It's the ideal display for multiplayer retro gaming. A 27" should do.
>>
>>3482903
There might still be specialised suppliers, but yeah, it would probably be expensive.
>>3482914
The CRTs in projectors are often called lamps or bulbs.

But anyway, these units are only good for movies and the like. Even TV programs with their logos and fixed layouts can damage the tubes.
>>
>>3482631
Weren't there rear projection CRT TV sets? You could get one of those instead.

Someone who actually owns projectors here...

Different projectors handle different signals differently. I have one DLP projector where a 480i signal actually flickers, like a CRT. You would not want to use this projector for that (unless muh authentic flicker). None of my other DLP or LCD projectors do that. However that projector has nearly zero lag. I have an LCD where the lag makes gaming pointless for anything faster than pokemon.

I play games on mine all the time. The experience varies per projector. My CRT isn't as bright as others but has the advantage of being a CRT. None of my LCDs are as good as any of my DLPs. One DLP is particular has high lumens, low lag, and is excellent for gaming.

The only reason to get a period projector would be to get a CRT cinema projector and play light gun games on a 100"+ screen. Since you don't have room for a 30" CRT you won't be doing this.

Dont you love that rainbow effect you see when you move your eyes with DLP? Its so damn trippy.
>>
>>3482938
You don't want those, after a while they warp the image in weird ways.

All things eventually die, Anon. We just happen to live in a time where most rear projection tvs have exceeded their half-life once if not twice. That doesn't mean it's impossible to find a low hour one, possibly even for free just like all the mostly burned out ones. It's just a matter of recognizing out when you see it and knowing how to judiciously turn down something free once you've gone to see it in person.
>>
>>3482985
For some reason the rainbow effect is really pronounced for me so all my DLP 6 segment. It helps a lot.
