Anyone know of any other arcade games that were platformers? Pic related is The New Zealand Story.

Toki is my personal favorite though

In what appears to be a blood stain.

Woah man that's edgy for such a cute looking game.
>>

Magician Lord is good fun but has some unfair difficulty in later stages (if you're new to the game). VS Super Mario Bros is also an overlooked game because people think it's the NES game.

Rod-Land. Think bubble bobble, except you use a magic rod to catch enemies and slam them to the ground repeatedly.

I wish there were a version with what /b/tards think it is.

Genpei Toumaden nigga.

The small view stages are the most intense, fun and altogether satisfying platforming I've experienced in an arcade game.

Takes a bit of getting used to though, since there's only like, one type of platform in the game that doesn't dump you straight off as it moves. (The skelly boatmen)
>>
>>3459263
Except you wouldn't be able to such a version in an arcade, even if it did exist.
>>
>>3459270
I remember the sequel to this game coming out in the US on the Turbografx-16 under the name "Samurai Ghost"
>>
>>3459276
The fact of its existence would drive up minds high enough.

Yeah, but the sequel isn't nearly as good unfortunately. They cut out small and overhead modes, leaving us only with big mode which was by far the most boring part of the original.

It's because small mode existed that we were able to see this game almost completely lose restraint and go batshit on the player!

That's how dumb you sound.

>>
OP has a point, arcade platformers seem to be relegated to run and guns like Contra or single screen cooperative games like Bubble Bobble.
>>
>>3460259
That's not the case at all. Just because you're ignorant doesn't make OP's point any more valid.
>>
>>3460265

Marvel Land, megadrive version has more stages.
>>
>>3460265
I mean pure platformers are somewhat rare to find on arcades, they are mostly run and guns.
>>
>>3460274
You can't disagree on a matter of fact. Where could you possibly get the idea that platformers weren't common arcade games?
>>
>>3460282
Name some and contribute to the thread.
>>
>>3460281
If The New Zealand Story is a pure platformer then the genre is plentiful in arcades.

You're cancer. Go back to rebdit if you want to talk about your Anyess.
>>
>>3460027
>>3460798

You are literaly retarded, there were tons of fighting game and platformers in both platforms.
>>
To be fair most of the games cited here are run and guns. There aren't many arcades where you jump in your enemies.
>>
>>3461862
>if you don't jump on your enemies it's not a platformer
wow these guys are literally retarded nintencucks
>>
>>3461862
What do you mean? Do you think every platformer has to be le maryoh?
>>
>>3461896
On second thought I reckon you're right and I'm wrong. I agree with you.
>>
>>3461738
Protip: If the core gameplay doesn't revolve around properly executing jumps (or some mechanic similar to jumping), it's not a platformer.

>>3461772
See above, and original console fighters were rare and always shit.
>>
>>3462421
Draw the shit line.

Cause I agree that arcade fighters are better but some console fighters are good enough.
>>
>>3462434
I honestly can't think of a single console fighter that wasn't dogshit, friend. Drawing a blank here. Maybe Smash if you want to count that, but the only /vr/ entry doesn't play very well either.
>>
>>3462421
There are many arcade games that require precise jumping or "platforming" though, the only difference is that they also have focus on action elements, thus "action-platformer".

>original console fighters
Nobody said they had to be console excusives though, that's arbitrary shit you just made up. Wether it's port or original, it's undeniable that consoles had tons of fighting games just like the arcades.
>>
>>3459103

>>3459140
Magician Lord blows.
>>
>>3459103
You're right. There were only a small fraction as many platformers in arcades as there were on consoles. Most of the side-scrollers were either shumps, run n guns, or "action games", with relatively few pure platformers in the arcades.
>>
>>3459480
>>3459103
I've never seen anyone mention that Tiki the Kiwi can actually fly if you repeatedly press up enough.

Or that the levels even have warps designed for that.
>>
>>3462684
Define pure platformer.
>>
Rastan and Ninja Spirit are pretty cool.
>>
>>3462515
>Nobody said they had to be console excusives though, that's arbitrary shit you just made up.
I thought it was implicit but if not I perhaps should've made myself clearer.

>Wether it's port or original, it's undeniable that consoles had tons of fighting games just like the arcades.
This point we don't disagree on.
