I recently just purchased a copy of Estpolis and was trying to find a translation patch (Japanese just isn't good enough yet). I only seem to find patches for Estpolis 2, was there never a patch made for 1?

why would there be one? The English version released shortly after the Japanese.

It's never going to get good if you never use it.

>I can basically read at a 5 year old level, which makes playing this game a tad hard.
You've got to start somewhere. Of course it's going to be slow in the beginning but you get used to things over time.
These RPGs are made for elementary school children so they should be easier to get into than adult oriented adventure games.

True, my plan was to go through both games in english, and then beat them in Japanese. I guess I am just an idiot for thinking there would be a patch for the first game.

If anything you should try Japanese first and then the translation to make sure you understood everything.
But too often translations don't actually translate and you only get confused.

Hmm, I never thought about it like that. I tried my hand at translating the Loony Toons game for SNES that I bought and it seemed to work out somewhat okay. However, on the other side, I bought some random Japanese platformer clearly for children and couldn't translate it for shit.
