Oftentimes people will compare ports between platforms of comparable power but rarely does anyone examine the ports to less powerful platforms. It seems obvious, why would anyone ever bother with those over the more technically impressive versions. However that's not to say they aren't good or even impressive in their own right such as 8-bit Sonic, Ecco or SoR, the NES port of KQV, those sorts of things. So I think it would be fascinating for us to discuss downgrade ports that we enjoy and why.

Most of those were master system games originally though, which the game gear's hardware is based on.

Interestingly actually the SMS version of Streets of Rage 1 & 2 aren't straight ports to the GG with slight adjustments to the colour & resolution. I think both 1 & 2 were built from the ground up for their respective hardware with different graphics, music and even levels included in one but then not the other. Here look at the SMS version by comparison to the vid the OP...

This is a good thread OP.

I LOVED the game gear port of Samurai Shodown when I was growing up. My friend had a Game Gear and lent it to me a bunch of times. I loved the Neo Geo version at the arcades, but really liked this home port the best. One friend got the SNES version and it wasn't that great (the Genesis one was pretty good though).

I don't know what it was but the Game Gear one was just a bunch of fun. I also loved the Game Boy Mortal Kombat 1 port . It was stupid fun playing as goro with the cheat code and the chiptune music was great.

Since every Neo Geo Port before the Saturn was a downgrade, which games were ported that people like on other consoles? World Heroes 2 on SNES was really good - just more balanced and fun to play.
>>
>>3455312
Wow I forgot just how terrible the SNES port was of Shodown - the Genesis one looks and plays so much better.

Hot damn, that is really good! I wish I would have had a Game Gear instead of a Game Boy for some genres. I mean, I loved the Mario and Wario Lands, Zelda, and a bunch of other nintendo GB games, but Game Gear really did some handheld genres really well like fighting games.

Yeah I mean, I just had the Game Boy back then too and it has an excellent library but I'm hard pressed to think of any particularly worthwhile console to handheld ports mostly due to the lack of colour. Once the GBC hit however, there's lots like the Mega Man Xtreme games

Not bad at all, I'll have to keep my eyes peeled for it when I'm game hunting. Unfortunately even a lot of retro stores carry very little Game Gear stuff because it's one of those systems that just never caught on with the hoarder crowd likely due to the screen and their propensity for the buttons to crap out with age.

>>3455330
Aw yes, was that one ever actually released in North America though? If not that's a shame because I like kinda it better than the Genesis version

Sega's 8-bit versions used to be really great: either straight "lesser" but well made ports (like Bonanza Brothers) or from-the-ground-up awesome reimaginings (Sonic, Castle of Illusion).

Later on they got lazy and started churning out really shitty downgrades, such as Wonder Boy in Monster World

That looks really good for a SMS game. The port of the first game isn't nearly as smooth.
>>
>>3455298
I...did not know Streets of Rage had a GameGear port. Huh.

While I can accept a complete re-imagining, as in the 8-bit Sonic games, the example in the OP is obviously exactly the same game with less features. Even as a kid, you'd feel ripped off because you know there's a better, more popular version out there that everyone's playing.
>>
>>3461349
As a kid you wouldn't feel ripped off because it could be played anywhere (recess, the beach, car trips, etc) without lugging a Genesis, SoR cart, portable TV and generator with you. At least until if you were one of those spoiled brats who bought a Sega Nomad in 1995 like me

Amazing the kind of stuff people can do with 2600s these days. Although I suppose even if they did know how to do this in the 70s, the capacity of the cart needed to fit something like this on would've been prohibitively expensive at the time.

Different features. The NES version isn't a direct port of the SNES version.
>NES version has only 7 (exclusive) bosses before Wario
>These bosses are beaten in a different way. The SNES version has a VS. COM battle with split screen but on NES there's only one screen with the boss inside it. You need to line up combos to win.
>You can't lift diamonds in the NES version
>Wario has a extra move in the SNES version (Egg)
>NES version has two kinds of Round Game
>NES version has a training mode
>You can change the control input in SNES WW
>>

Meh. The base concept is the same but Mindjack is not fun at all.

>>3455298
the gameplay and graphic adaptations look really well done but the music is fucked. understandable but unforgivable when it's streets of rage 2

While I prefer the FM sound of the Genesis SoR OST better, I think the chip used in the GG which dates all the way back to the Sega Mk 1 in like 1983 does an admirable job and I still enjoy it.
>>
>>3462445
it's not the 8 bit sound, i really like the sound of the game gear. they picked the wrong melodies to "compromise" on to fit the limitations. the initial stage 2 music is what got me most butthurt, that iconic arpeggio is just gone. original music would have been much better, but i doubt koshiro was involved with this game so they just tried to port the existing music and bungled it.
it's all subjective and i absolutely have a stick up my pretentious ass
