this game makes no sense
>>
It represents the illogical nature of dreams.
>>
It's a game about the concept of entities living amongst the collective subconscious dreamscape existing between human minds (like a being that somehow consists of only electromagnetic wave patterns and can only live in the human brain). A malicious entity uses nightmares to cause psychosomatic illnesses in humans in order to feed off of their negative emotions which sustain it's existence. NiGHTS is a particular dream entity of the same general type that happens to feed specifically off of the feeling of "courage" which takes the form of red "ideya" which is a made up word for those floating colored balls that come out of the heroes. Using courage and joining together with NiGHTS you reclaim other stolen facets of the ego like hope or intelligence, and regain the ability to self actualize and confront your inner fears.

Integral to the plot is the idea that courage was the only trait that couldn't be stolen, so even in the depths of depression and anxiety you could still come back if you brought forth courage from within yourself.

I want to cum inside Nights.

Ew, is that really the American cover?
>>
I love everything about that game: graphics, music, controls,...
Except for, you know, the actual game part. I just never got it.
>>
>>3450354
It's made by Sonic Team, so it is literally designed for autists.

Of course that game doesn't make sense.

And this is why the Saturn flopped. The N64/Playstation generation catered to a dumb new generation of gamers that needed their hands held.

For fuck's sake, I got that shit first time I played. Nothing at all hard about it if you had any gaming sense at all.

Sigh. Gaming sure has gone to shit.

True. Kirby fanbase became mad with your post lol
>>
>>3453343
The N64 catered to the under 12 market with colourful mascot games and multiplayer games while the Playstation catered to the autists with no motor skills market with narrative driven games and JRPGs. Get your facts right.
>>
The game is to score as many points as possible using your flying and aerial acrobatics skills to collect orbs and fly through hoops.

If you collect orbs and fly through hoops in quick succession, you start a "chain" which adds a score multiplier. Maintaining long "chains" is therefore the aim of the game; on some levels, a continuous "chain" can be wrapped right round to your starting point and continued from there without a break, enabling gigantic scores.

I read back in the 1990s that Shigeru Miyamato played a bit of NiGHTS at E3. When asked about it, he said he enjoyed it, but felt the game was "in my opinion, unfinished".

I agree with him; the game is unfinished.
>>
I understood the basic gameplay, but the collectibles never made any sense to me.
>>
>>3450354
The player character, is it a she or is it a he?

This is important.
>>
>>3455932
neither

or both if you prefer
>>
>>3455932
Nights is genderless, his kind simply have no concept of gender to begin with. This is established canon.

He's not like Chrona from Soul Eater who is deliberately ambiguous.
>>
>>3455856
>Kirby fanbase became mad with your post lol
Ironic you brought up Kirby as that started out on the Game Boy in the early 90's.

>>3455885
>while the Playstation catered to the autists with no motor skills market with narrative driven games and JRPGs.

I'll bite; The PS1 is more like an inbetween NES/SNES where while it was technically inferior from a graphical standpoint in comparison to it competitor (akin to the NES), it still managed to get a very good and lengthy library full of games that pretty much appeal to almost every market around at that time (akin to the SNES).

The N64, however I find was more of a spiritual successor to the MS than anything; take that as you will.
>>
>>3453194
If anyone says this is the best game ever they need their head examined, you can't even complete the game in the state it was released.
>>
>>3455974
>genderless
>still says his
they is annoying to use, but still
>>
>>3456058
This is because the id is female and the ego male. The passenger is male and the ship is female. The universe is female and the sun is male and the earth is female again, do you understand? NiGHTS is a passenger, not the vehicle. The vehicle is your dreams.

>I agree with him; the game is unfinished.

I think all games on the Saturn were unfinished though. Those were insane years for Sega, the people in charge were complete assholes during those times. Sega never really recovered from the Saturn.
>>
>>3456136

Actually with regard to Sega's 1st party titles you may unfortunately be correct.

Arcade ports like Sega Rally, Virtual On, Virtual Fighter 2 etc were technically brilliant (both in terms of gameplay and effective use of the Saturn hardware) but very bare bones in terms of extra content, modes, options etc for home console users.

Sonic Team's efforts like NiGHTS and Burning Rangers were innovative but very short and lacking in content.

It's weird because Saturn was overall my favourite console of all time with my favourite games, but I have to concede Nintendo do make much more "complete", rounded titles for home gamers.
>>
Im surprised sega never fixed the controls for the steam version of Nights. It feels nothing like the original game.
>>
>>3455932

>The game is to score as many points as possible using your flying and aerial acrobatics skills to collect orbs and fly through hoops.
And you go in circles doing it. It's kinda boring.
>>
>>3456334

It's not boring to me listening to awesome music and being pelted with psychedelic visuals while concentrating on maintaining my control over an analogue flight system requiring split second timing and finesse, in fact this transports me into the zone more than anything else, but to each his own

Is it my imagination or was there a bit of HD Christmas NiGHTS in that video? I thought Christmas NiGHTS was Saturn only...
>>
>>3457956
Christmas Nights is on the Steam version. I have no idea if it's the "full version" because I have never played Saturn Christmas Nights.
>>
>>3459467
Neither have I. I have a box of factory sealed ones but never opened one. Because I played the regular one and it's pretty shit. At least compared to the huge selection of good games.
>>
>>3459467

Mother of fuck. I'm out of touch, don't use Steam or read about it either.

Brb getting steam
>>
The Steam version includes a lite version of Christmas Nights. It doesn't include Sonic and the infinite loop mode. Basically you can play the extra level, Nights has different costumes if you play at Christmas or August and you got the A Life monitoring thing
>>
>>3459752
I would gladly take one from you.

>>3460214
Worth it.
>>
Does anyone know what's wrong with the PSN release of Nights? I have heard some talk it's inferior to the Saturn version but not any details
>>
good game
>>
>>3459467

It's a pared down version, in that it has the levels and some of the presents, but not all of them. The only -major- one it's missing (iirc) is the Sanic mode, but if you ask if it's complete then the answer is no.
>>
>>3460352
>>3464931

Does it have the music mixing thing? That was the best present. The soundtracks to the levels are really astonishingly good, especially the "dark" mix of Forest

How exactly does christmas nights work? Is it a separate game on it's own or is it dlc that you download from a disc? I am wondering if it will be worth it to emulate it. Ive emulated the original Nights before but I have only played christmas nights on the steam version.

It's a demo disc that was mailed out with magazines for free back in the day, it's it's own thing. If you've played the steam Christmas NiGHTS then they're functionally the same, you're just missing some neat extras.

Still, if you're emulating and not trying to buy a copy, there's no reason not to. Even if just for the novelty of seeing the first time Sonic was ever playable in full 3D.
>>
Nights makes sense if you like score attack games like pinball. Basically if you like playing a game just to see how many points you can get. I would put the bullet hell shooters in that category too. Never really got into it myself despite having it for PS2. It's an okay game, but I got bored really quickly despite getting A ratings. Doesn't help that the game is so short.
>>
>>3468425
I have never received an A rank at nights. Nights is hard as fuck, unless they toned down the ps2 version or something.

Its kind of strange that they rereleased it for the ps2, but not the gamecube. I mean, when you have the sonic adventure games ported to the game cube as well as billy hatcher.
>>
>>3468927
You'll always get C or worse ranks if you go instantly to the gazebo after picking up an Ideal orb. Instead, you should be farming points while the timer runs down, and then only go to the gazebo once the timer is near 0. I guarantee you'll get a B or A rank, unless you really suck at bosses.
>>
>>3468927
it wasnt the only sega/saturn game that was ported to ps2. they had a sega ages series of games released in japan only for ps2.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sega_Ages#Sega_Ages_2500
>>
>>3468938
Depends on the boss. I always fail at the dynamite cat.
>>
>>3468938
Correct. When I realised this my score went from C to A pretty quickly and then there isn't really much else to it. It's all about memorization. I'm not aware that the PS2 version is any easier. I got Nights on my hdd after I FMCB'ed my PS2. It's an okay game, just not the 'super classic' it was made out to be. Could be just me but I only got about 7-8 hours worth of enjoyment out of it. Literally no desire to go back to it again and again.
