Chose Valeria during my first playthrough because I heard she is stronger.
Regretted choosing their stats instead of the character I liked more.

Chose Kasumi during my second playthrough.
Regretted again because Kasumi doesn't do jack shit after recruited, and sucks in battle.

If I ever play this game again, would choose Valeria.

Suikoden I/II is actually very shitty as a matter of mechanics. I just played through 1 twice, and I realized how shitty it is that 99% of the time you have at least 2 other required characters with you, which makes 90% of the other combat characters useless. 2 handles it a little bit better, but it's still that the game is incredibly comfy even if combat is lackluster.

It hits home why JRPGs basically died as anything except a niche genre: other games got good at story telling, so why the fuck would you sit through a menu driven grind fest for a cool story when just about every other genre can do one also and NOT be pain in the ass to play?

But that's neither here not there. Kasumi gives early access to rokkaku as I recall, which lets you grab a few more ninjas early.

Suikoden II.

I liked Kasumi more as a kid. Appreciate Valeria more these days. Man, I miss Suikoden. Random stuff nobody gives a shit about: I DM'd a Suikoden dnd game. Was a blast.
