N64 was my first system (my older brothers owned the master system and megadrive) so it makes the list, in spite of being a system that I almost never play at this point and actively hate as a piece of hardware (awful video output, rubbish controller, tiny library).

Master System gets props because it's a system that I've always hung onto, megadrive is great but I only just started collecting for that system again. Dreamcast has been a console I've played at least a few times a year consistently since 2004.

Gamecube gets 1 because I absolutely love the hardware itself, the controller is fantastic and the gameboy player is a must have, it also has a relatively small library but many of the iterative titles on the system are the best of the entire franchise (Best Mario Kart, best smash brothers, Best paper mario game, arguably best metroid)

Both DS and 3DS are god-tier handhelds, they have enough original games and remakes/ports that they make for a must to anyone who likes video games.
I'd also say I like the 3DS a tad bit more, just because of the emulation and dat god damned Soul Hackers remake.

Oh yeah, also M2 ports.

Considering there's no viable Xbox emulator yet, and the fact that Dolphin runs flawlessly, I would say you get more content with a modded Xbox than a hacked Wii.

Vita is in the current state as PSP because henkaku hasn't exploit all it's potential, so yes, snes sucks donkey dick on vita/psp (and psp can't run n64 properly whereas Xbox can, so, yeah)

why don't you put NES/SNES on one line as well?
>>
>>3437332
because those are totally different
the gb and gbc aren't totally different
>>
>>3437335
dmg and gbc are about as different to each other as gcn and wii. Just because one is a binary compatible superset to the other, doesn't mean the new features don't vastly change what you can do. Unless you're suggesting a 80286 is not much different from an i7, in which case you're on your own.
>>
>>3437340
fine good point
i'm changing it to just gbc then
add that to your list of won internet arguments
>>
>>3437341
that'd be the only entry then. I'm not into arguments. I'm just a hobbyist gbc dev and player, and know to stay the hell away from the dmg because of the differences, and it annoys me when people group these two different systems together, as it's dismissing the actual potential and capabilities of the gbc. It's consistently ignored as a stepping stone between the one and only dmg and the gba. I don't like either, for various reasons, but the gbc is like the perfect setup, and the few games that understood that, are held in high regard for good reason.
>>
>>3437348
Oh I know how much more powerful the GBC is (and how badass the sound is) I just grouped them together since that's what most people do I think. I don't really blame them, they do have very similar designs and names, but I know the differences. Why do you dislike the GBA?
>>
>>3436062
Are you saying that after the 1999 goes 199X?
>>
>>3437360
a few reasons. The inclusion of a framebuffer/pixel mode lead to pretty bad engines, the inclusion of the triggers, plus video modes borrowed from the SNES turned what could have been a creative handheld into a port victim. It also came way too early in the lifecycle of the GBC, suffocating it. I like the micro from a design point of view, strongly dislike though that it was the GBA where they switched from reflective to transmissive LCDs. The NDS (lite) is a great system again, second only to the GBC, but I can do entirely without the GBA. It did more harm than good.

Wasn't it kinda a big fuck up of Nintendo to not make it a disc based console? If they had, the would have gotten games like Metal Gear Solid and FF VII. I would even argue that if they had, Sega would still be in the console market and Sony would have never made another console after the PS1
>>
>>3441126
PSX coming out almost 2 years earlier and having very easy architecture to develop for also didn't help Ninty.
>>
>>3441126
the fuckup was making a disc based on console. The worse fuckup was idiot gamers falling for it. The workarounds and issues games went through because of disc drives are depressing

Whatever compromises that disks made were superseded by the myriad of benefits. Disk games were much larger, had much better audio and opened up game development to smaller studios because they were cheaper to produce. You wouldn't get something like LSD or King's field on a cartridge, let alone the huge library of jrpgs of the time.

>much larger
not a benefit for games. For interactive movies, but not games

>much better audio
static audio, yes. In the mid 90s we had games that changed music dynamically to player actions. In the late 90s that vanished, and hasn't been found again until recently, thanks in part to wave based music

>opened up game development to smaller studios because they were cheaper to produce
The "available space" lead to an explosion in asset quality, like amount of models included, musical scores; which directly translated to skyrocketing development costs. Before the disc games could be done by a small team and a low budget. The license costs of cartridges suck, but not as much as the extreme costs of non-game content like assets.

>huge library of jrpgs of the time
because that's about the only genre of games that profits from discs, because of their typically large amount of non-interactive content (cutscenes, music) and the strict linearity, allowing multidisc productions. Other games would typically be just a couple MB with the rest of the disc filled with CDDA. They did not benefit from the size, but they definitely felt the drawbacks of load times and tiny RAM. The latter was not a problem on cart systems, because the cart was memory mapped and there was little reason to load it anywhere. On disc based systems, all the model and texture data for a level had to fit into memory, as streaming was too expensive.

Am I the only one that prefers the PSX's SPU to streamed CD music?

yes, you are. When Sony included that mechanism that had to pay developers to use it, because they hated it. People were cutting off their ears whenever that thing made noises. You are that one exception, the only person on this planet that has ever and will ever enjoy hearing the output of an audio related part of a video game system. If only Sony knew you back then. You could have warned them. You could have sent them a letter, telling them that preferring that sound is such a unique and unusual condition, it will cause serious trouble. In fact, the very developer of the SPU didn't know what they were doing. They hated the concept of these sounds, yet they went through and made a chip that would produce them, these madmen. You're truly special, and it's an honor, and a curse to have you post here.
>>
>>3441352
The playstation sound chip is excellent, imo. Probably the best of that generation.
>>
>>3441260
>Other games would typically be just a couple MB
Which was still too much for cartridges and annoying with floppies.
>>
>>3441898
>Which was still too much for cartridges
N64 cartridges were 32-64MB, well within the size of quite a few PS games
>>
>>3441918
I can't imagine Metal Gear solid or Silent Hill fitting on a cartridge, even with Resident evil 2's compression system.

>>3441918

I wonder; did any N64 games use cartridge swapping, like the PlayStation's disc swapping? Would that even be possible?
>>
>>3441926
No, it might have been possible with earlier revisions, they cut the banjo kazooie stop n swop feature because of that. They could probably use the memory card to generate a carry over savefile though.
>>
>>3441886
It's all subjective, but I prefer the Saturn's sound.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y9BXpRxVLis

Too bad there aren't a ton of games that used it. Nights is the only one I know for certain that uses it.
>>
>>3441926
Don't know about the N64 but in some other Nintendo cartridge system the program counter points directly into cartridge ROM, and removing the cartridge is a bad idea, the cpu is kind of busy reading from it. You might be able to pull some stunts by putting a loop routine into RAM, executing it, then swapping out the cartridges and pressing a button to exit the loop, but I'm not aware of anybody ever trying it. Sounds like a nice experiment for homebrew

>>3441930

How come N64 didnt try pic related?
>>
>>3441926
No N64 games used it. It would only be possible if the console was powered down between swaps with a save loaded from the controller pak.

There were experiments by Rare for a swap without a memory card, but later revisions of the N64 do not retain data in RAM for longer than 1 or 2 seconds, compared with the 10 to 20 seconds of earlier models.
>>
>>3441934
The gameboy adapter for the 64 was basically the same concept.
>>
>>3441886
Isn't Saturn's better? It has 32 channels as opposed to PSX's 24.
>>
>>3441935
>It would only be possible if the console was powered down
why? physical lock on the cart?
>>
>>3441918
In what year?
>>
>>3441939
It doesn't, but removing a live cartridge is bad for the system and might corrupt the data that's in the RAM anyway.
>>
>>3441949
>removing a live cartridge is bad for the system
>might corrupt the data that's in the RAM
how so?
>>
>>3441952
I'm no electrical engineer, but you have to consider there's still power running through the system, and there's no guarantee that the user will remove the cartridge straight up with all the pins losing contact simultaneously.
>>
>>3441958
that's why stuff like USB has two extended contacts. Guess they didn't feel like doing that back then
