We can kind of see his general tastes as an adventure/platformer so Metroid is another real obvious one. Faxanadu would also be an easy addition. Wizards & Warriors.

Ghosts n Goblins can unfold other challenging arcade platformers like Trojan, maybe Gauntlet 2. This dude would probably enjoy River City Ransom.

I have a bit of a soft spot for it since it came with the gameboy I bought off my cousin as my first console, but it's only passingly close to those games.
Enemies will respawn frequently, but follow predictable patterns. You can only carry two items at a time, a main weapon (sword or wand) and a variety of sub-weapons/tools. you can wander back and forth between all the area screens until you beat the boss of the area, at which point you're transported to a new... world and your stats reset (any power boosts and hearts you gained; your items stay).

Admittedly, the game isn't great. It's only got 5 levels, and it's not well-balanced. For example, the wand outclasses the sword easily since they have the same power but the wand has an extra square of reach, I never found a use for the chameleon ring since turning into terrain isn't useful when enemies follow a path and will crash into you. At best it's an ambitious and fun game that is pretty short. That and the aforementioned multiplayer, which I know works pretty well from videos but have never got to experience because I've never met someone else with the game.

Not retro, but whatever. What exactly is it you're looking for? What games are recommended really depends on taste.
If you're looking for some mindless addictive fun, I'd recommend Dynasty Warriors 4, Dynasty Warriors 5 and Dynasty Warriors 5 Empires.

If you want to keep it retro-related, there's lots of Collections on the PS2.
Mega Man Anniversary Collection, Mega Man X Collection, Sonic Mega Collection Plus, Genesis Collection, etc. etc. there's a fuckton of different retro collections, too many to make in one post.
