I owned this. It lives up to its praise. Plus it was animated by real Disney animators which made it feel like you were really playing the movie.
>>

I very much enjoyed the game but to call it the best non pack in game is much

Disney was hyper relevant at the time and Aladdin had come out literally a year before. The movie came out on VHS less than a month before the Genesis game. Practically marketed itself at that point. The game didn't even need to be a quality game to sell like crazy since lots of people were buying it for their kids whose new favorite movie had just come out on VHS.
>>
>>3420164
>why so popular?

Younger brothers. Mine got this shit for his birthday or something.

I think I played it once or twice. Got bored of throwing apples or whatever the fuck you do.

>>
>>3420513
It was a big controversy even back then
>>
>>3420304

good points, but on top of all that, it was a GOOD game. Great animation, great control, good scenery interactivity, a damn good side-scroller..Also as you said disney+ relevant.
>>
>>3420164
Same reason Goldeneye was one of the top sellers on N64.

Good game plus good license.
>>
>>3420589
I think goldeneye would been a hit even without the 007 license.
>>
>>3420804
It would have been, yeah. But the 007 license gave it mega sales.

For all the hype of Halo CE, Goldeneye outsold it by a couple of million.

Perfect Dark, without the license, sold less than half, though still good sales.

It's funny because Aladdin was a liar and a thief
>>
>>3420513
It obviously would be "rayciss" to judge it unfavorably in any shape or form. It would have very strong pro-immigration and pro-islam overtones.

Heck, it might have been a part of the multicult scheme even back then (as >>3420825 seems to be hinting at), we just didn't realize it, how would we anyway given that the western world was still a relatively nice and cozy place in the early 1990s.
>>
>>3420827
Now we got plenty of "Aladdins" coming on rickety boats every day, and many European girls who most likely watched the movie as children seem to like that fact quite a lot.

The only controversial thing I remember is the editing of the opening song line "where they cut off your ear if they don't like your face" which was quietly changed to "...where it's flat and immense and the heat is intense." Out of curiosity, what else was controversial?

I still need to play the SNES game.

The real question is, why does every ever talk about the console versions, when the best version was on PC.

Megadrive version especially is like a worse DOS version.
>>
>>3420164
I just came in here to say the SNES version is way better.
>>
>>3421227

How can it be a worse DOS version when the DOS version has the screen cropped and missing levels?

>>3421231

It's not even the same game, but yeah I think the Capcom game is overall a better game.
>>
>>3421227
in an age of "remasters", this game would be a prime candidate for it.
a merger of genesis and pc versions with a clean up of the heavy vertical dithering, thats your $15 release right there. but no, $10 for an alternate version you had 22 years to pirate instead
>>
>>3421231
>>3421240
By better you mean easy as fuck for retards like yourselves and shit tier animation in comparison.
>>
>>3421330

Easy there buddy, why the anger? The Capcom game is an alright game all around, decent graphics (with more aesthetically pleasing backgrounds, with more detail and color), sprites animation isn't as fluid or vibrant as the Virgin game, but it still does it job, Aladdin has a bunch of different sprites for his animation (like when he bounces something and does a 360 flip in the air) and overall fine.
The Virgin game has A+ sprite animation, but D- everything else, from level design to controls to pacing to an anti-climatic final boss.

So, you decide how you prefer to balance your taste, if sprite animation is all it takes for you to prefer a game over another, or you take into account things like game physics and level design.
>>
>>3420164
>How did this become the best selling non-bundled Genesis game?

Because it played great, sounded great, looked great (animation done by Disney themselves), had tons of humour, and was licensed from the best movie Disney ever made.
>>
>>3421363
>best movie Disney ever made.

That's not The Sword in the Stone.
>>
it's a great game.
>>
>>3421343
Funny that you say that, since the Genesis version had the better physics and level design. SNES game was a generic as fuck platformer with fully linear level design. You couldn't even use a scimitar, and the game didn't use the movie music either (except for the Genie song).

Genesis version was more action packed, you could use a scimitar, the levels were gigantic and nonlinear, you could kill enemies with camel spit, it used Disney sprites and music from the movie. It was just a more faithful adaptation and a more fun game to play.

I agree that the backgrounds in the SNES game are more colorful, but the Genesis one took advantage of the TV signal to create more colours, so on an actual TV it looks way better than on screenshots. So it's not that much worse in reality. And because of the animation, the Genesis version way better in motion than the SNES one. SNES only looks better on screenshots.
>>
>>3421376
>better physics

How? The Virgin game doesn't even use momentum. The physics aren't remotely as complex as on the Capcom game.

>fully linear level design

Nothing wrong with linear level design in platformers. In fact, the problem was Virgin's game which had too many maze level design, typical of western platformer games.

Now there's something that makes your argument contradict yourself, you use as strong points in favor of Virgin's game the fact that Aladdin uses a scimitar, and that it's more faithful to the movie. But Aladdin never uses a scimitar in the movie, rather he uses his acrobatic skills to fight, rather than weapons.

I agree about the sprites, they ARE better on the Virgin game. This is without question, no need to discuss that.
The music is good in both games, I can't complain about either.
And I agree about the backgrounds on the Virgin game aren't actually bad or ugly, they are good, just not as detailed or colorful as the Capcom game.
>>
>>3421406
>the problem was Virgin's game which had too many maze level design, typical of western platformer games.
Notice how all your criticisms ultimately come down to "i'm bad at it and a pleb", when your biggest criticism is an element that makes you use your fucking brain it's time to go pleb somewhere else.
>>
>>3421750

No need to ad-hominem bro, the Virgin game still has its merits and I recognize them, I'm not shitting on it, I enjoyed both games as a kid.

Confirmed to not play the entire game. The game momentum and in fact heavily uses it. You even have two completely separate ways of jumping based on how much momentum you build up before jumping.
>>
>>3420842
Not really controversial but I think people had some sort of quarrel with the appearance of the main characters. Both Aladdin and Jasmine both sound and look European, whereas all the villians look Arabic.
>>
>>3420164
Music and animation is top-tier

Too bad the game is average
>>
My Mega Drive was bundled with Aladdin.

Thank God I was a Sega kid and never grew up believing stupid shit like this: >>3421406

Aladdin is such a great game.

And lol to the guy who thinks the DOS version was better. The DOS version has an ugly HUD that takes up one fifth of the screen. The frame rate is worse and the soundtrack is completely distorted.

The Windows 95 version on the other hand is a quality port.

Virgin made a mistake with the original DOS port of Aladdin and got Data Point East to port their Disney games afterwards including Win95 Aladdin. Their DOS version of The Jungle Book is just a solid great great.
>>
>>3420482

Genesis has better platformers and shmup games with minimal to no slowdown compared to the SNES.
>>
>>3421227

You're right about the DOS version of Virgin's game though

>>3421794
I did play it, Virgin's game doesn't use momentum, it's just another Dave Perry game like Cool Spot and EWJ, those games are not known for their controls or physics, neither is Aladdin. Sprite animation is their forte.

>>
>>3420164
No idea. Honestly, it isn't a very enjoyable game to begin with and even the things people praise about it (e.g. the animation) aren't anything special. I played it as a kid, but never watched the movie itself back in the day so that's probably why the game didn't appeal to me. However, I did happen to watch it later on and I admit it's a pretty good 2d animated movie. The game isn't.

>SNES game was a generic as fuck platformer

You've been repeating this so many times that it's seriously starting to look like an involuntarily projection. Specially with the fact that the Genesis game is a bland and generic platformer with absolutely nothing to set it apart from other games of this genre. Unless of course if you consider a miserable sword or the convolutedly designed levels to be good things.

>Genesis one took advantage of the TV signal to create more colours

The stupidities that the losing side create to make the competition look bad are fucking embarrassing. This one is on the same level as the "GENESIS DOES" or even worse.
>>
>>3429050
There's nothing wrong with having more explorative levels and more attack methods, you dumbass.
>>
>>3429050
>You've been repeating this so many times that it's seriously starting to look like an involuntarily projection.

The same thing applies to you stating that the Genesis game has no momentum and bad backgrounds, neither which is true.
>>
hilarious thread, I love how /vr/ can have balanced discussion about some non-vidya issues

to answer your question, it was fucking excellent compared to the other platformers
>>
>>3429056
>explorative levels

Not him, but it's not explorative, just typical unfocused western level design

Using the sword is also useless, the hit detection is shit, apples are more efficient, in fact, the best and fastest way to kill the final boss is by throwing apples.
On Capcom's game, apples only stunt enemies, and Aladdin uses his acrobatic moves to fight enemies like in the movie.

Have you never seen the rainbow on the waterfall in Sonic, or the transparent bar lights in Streets of Rage 2?

Abusing the NTSC signal to create new colours via dithering is a real thing that was used on early computers and early consoles equally, including CGA, C64, NES, and Genesis... and even on the Saturn.
>>
>>3429069
>Using the sword is also useless, the hit detection is shit, apples are more efficient,

That's because enemies can parry. If they attack the same time you do, you get a TING sound effect and a screen flash - indicating that your swords have clashed and neither side scored a hit.
Just use the crouching sword poke to avoid that and score hits 100% the time.
And don't forget that many enemies require more than 1 hit to defeat.

>in fact, the best and fastest way to kill the final boss is by throwing apples.

Again you haven't played the game. Swords do not damage any of the bosses (Jafar, Iago, the guard captain), you have to use apples on them exclusively.
Mid bosses can be hurt by the sword though, I think (Gazeem and the multi-armed statues in the Cave of Wonders).

>On Capcom's game, apples only stunt enemies, and Aladdin uses his acrobatic moves to fight enemies like in the movie.

so it plays like a generic as fuck platformer, instead of an action game. okay.
>>
>>3429080
>even on the Saturn.

And the Playstation also did dithering in hardware, and so did many Voodoo 3d accelerator cards for the PC, to fake more colours, not unlike what the Genesis did.
>>
>>3420164
It's easily one of Genesis' greatest games, which is unusual for a licensed game but then again this was Disney.
>>
>>3429095

No, not because of the parry, the hitbox detection is just off in general. It's a common issue with Dave Perry's games, see Cool Spot and EWJ.

>Again you haven't played the game.
I did, I had both Capcom and Virgin games as a kid. I just haven't played neither in a while, but the final boss fight on Virgin's games stuck in my memory because of being so anti-climatic and disappointing.

>so it plays like a generic as fuck platformer, instead of an action game. okay.

Capcom's game lets you grab onto ledges and also swing (you can kick enemies while swinging, just like Aladdin does in the movie). On top of using the bouncing mechanic to reach higher places.
Anyway, nothing wrong with "generic" platformer, a "generic" Capcom game is still a good game.
Not like Virgin's game is a unique experience or anything, either.
>>
>>3420164
I prefer Cool Spot and EWJ as far as Dave Perry games go.

Still better than the subpar Capcom platformer, though.

Kinda, but also happened the other way around.

Mikami said he would have bought the Genesis game back in the day because: 1) sword and 2) genie is on the cover (for some weird reason, Disney didn't let Capcom use Genie in the cover of the japanese release, but he was on the cover of the western version though, I wonder if Mikami knew that).

In response to that, Dave Perry said that he would have bought the Capcom game himself.
