I played this game today for the first time

I came expecting a Sonic carbon copy, and it´s not only far better than it (IMO) but surprisingly good. I find the arm mechanics pretty unique. Perhaps the only thing I don´t understand is why you can grab the common enemies? It makes sense with bigger ones, that can serve as a transport, but the common guys? I expected some kind of interaction, a lá Wario.
Anyways the game is fucking fantastic

I don't think I ever saw it in the shops. I've only played it via rom (and even then only once) I'll give it another crack.

I first saw an ad for it at a friend's place. Can't remember if it was a cereal box or a magazine. Didn't get to play it until I got emulators. Its pretty good, while Sonic focuses more on the feet, Ristar focuses more on the hands. Its a very hands-on kind of action.

Not really, the Japanese version only really has a different intro where a generic goddess creates Ristar to save the galaxy (same as in the Gamegear version) as opposed to the American version where you feel motivation because the villain has captured your father and you set out on a quest to rescue him.

Also the ending of the Japanese version shows that the main villain survived and we get a sequel hook that was never fulfilled. The American version outright has him get murdered.

The "save your dad" story in the US/EU version feels odd and we don't get to see Kaiser Greedy surviving in the end(which makes us fanboys dream of a sequel) and that sucks

The game simply didn't sell that much because they didn't advertise it enough and it came out at the end of the MD's lifespan

It's just one of those awesome games that for whatever reason didn't get any sequel like Sunset Riders or Kid Chameleon or Comix Zone
