I guess I'm mostly asking which sites I can trust. I've seen plenty of sites that say they have a translation, but I've not had much luck before.

Are you just blindly jumping into FE6? You might want to find some sort of rebalancing patch if that's the case.

Seisen no Keifu's new translation is actually finished as of May this year (or 99.999% at least). It's good, actually finished, and is almost entirely bug free. I think it was called "Project Naga" or something like that.

OP: I've played all the fire emblems released in the US except for the 3ds ones. Can't afford a 3ds, ha.

Awakening is good. Play through the Jap ones first so you can appreciate all characters they brought back as optional recruits. I bought Fates: Conquest and didn't like it, there's this shitty unit pairing system that you are absolutely forced to use to keep your weak units safe but using it makes it harder for them to gain experience. I hated it.

Anyway, seisen no keifu has a pre-patched rom floating around (no patching required), I just downloaded it a month ago for my raspberry pi. I don't know about pre-patched roms for 3 or thracia, but patching is easy enough if you read the translation patch's readme.

I managed to get FE6 (which I didn't have to do anything to) and Seisen no Keifu (which required patching) working.
