Mario Land 2 was great... for a handheld game. It feels closer to a traditional Mario title than the first but it still controls semi-oddly. I loved that you could choose which worlds to beat first but that also meant that most worlds had roughly the same difficulty level (except for maybe the Space Zone.) Still is quite a ways away from SMB3-tier

I'd have a much harder time deciding if Wario Land 2/3 were better than SMB3

It's hard to rank Wario Land against SMB3 since they're such different games, despite being platformers. That said, I'd rank them:

SMB3 with a save system > WL2 > SMB3 > WL1 > WL3 >>>>> SML1

The physics in SML1 are pretty bad. They're not "fun" like the other mario's (change direction in midair easily), but at the same time they're not realistic either, so why bother? There's also some glitchy shit with conservation of horizontal momentum when jumping near pipes, which again feels bad and it's the only game in the series that does that. It's a top-tier soundtrack and a fun enough 50 minutes, but nowhere near SMB3.

I love SML but that game is too simple to be compared with SMB3.

I wish Yokoi was still alive, though. His Mario and Wario games had a lot of personality and fun level design.

Nah.

The soundtrack is amazing though, one of the most memorable Marios in that regard by far. Neither super mario land is better than the nes games. The wario platformers might be though.

I saw Mario Land ported to TI calculator once and thought wow, this doesn't look anything like Mario. I didn't know Mario Land ACTUALLY looked that bad until I went to play it on 3DS VC.

Marioland was its own thing and there is no comparasion beatween the two series
I wish nintendo kept doing the marioland series, they were sifferent enough to be good but not too different to turn people off

Also maybe Kid Icarus would still be around. Kid Icarus Uprising is good, but it is just a one-off, and I don't like the "modern anime" aesthetic, characters, or writing style

No, but the second game is a good contender. I prefer the Wario Land series anyway; each of the games has its own unique style and they often deviate themselves from traditional platforming. Also, Wario is a more interesting character.

Mario Land deserves a certain amount of respect for being the first portable Mario game on the Game Boy.

The game itself isn't very good, but it remains nonetheless significant because of its status as the first Mario game on Game Boy. It's also attached to good ole Gunpei, which means that people have a soft spot for it (as well as the nostalgia).

To say that it's a "better" game than SMB3, however, is ridiculous. SMB3 is a better game in just about every respect.
