because the western version was botched. Heavy censorship (although that's the least important problem), changed the story and thus it didn't make sense and they upped the difficulty to insane levels without bothering to balance things up, so it really becomes very monotonous and tedious. I also should mention that most people didn't like the music, Koshiro was in his minimal techno phase and it didn't set well with people accustomed to the house music of the previoius entries. But the core play is excellent, probably one of the most dynamic and fast beat em ups ever. Get your hands on some translated Bare Knuckle III rom and enjoy.

Yeah I noticed the music was a massive step down from previous entries. I grew up playing SoR and just picked up SoR2 and fell in love with it. Was wondering if the third entry would be worth picking up. May as well grab it anyways, I usually dont play Genesis games for the story. I like they added a run feature but the slow walking of the first two games kinda felt like a trademark in the series and made things a little more intense.

SoR3 has by far the best music in the series. SoR1 and SoR2 were just imitating popular club music of the time. SoR3 did something new. It avoids the dated feeling of the first two.

Watched a play thru once. Only wanted to catch a few minutes to see what it looked like and ended up watching the whole damn thing. Looks fantastic.

On a different note I beat GA2 this morning on normal. It's good. Probably better with friends but still good. Some aspects from the first were better IMO like the stages, the mounts, and the final boss(Dark Guld is underwhelming compared to Death Adder). The fighting is improved in the sequel as is the way you use magic which these aspects alone make it better than the first.

Things that GA2 did better than GA1

1) controls are tighter and more responsive.

2) combat is better. hitboxes and hit detection are improved.

3) better AI overall. still dumb though. AI is more aggressive too

4) better character balance. all the characters are useful and usable in their own way. in GA1 (arcade) version, there was literally no reason to EVER use ax-battler. tyris had better reach on her sword swipes, better magic, better dash attack, better everything. In the genesis port though (of GA1), they gave ax-battler better reach than Tyris, which is better than nothing I guess. In GA2 though, Ax-Battler finally shines, and he's basically better than Tyris at everything, except magic damage and maybe the dash attack (Tyris has a lot of recovery on her dash attack though, making it less useful when surrounded by enemies). He even has better magic than Tyris because his lvl2 magic is the best in the game, because it sets up down stab infinites (or mount char attack infinites) for you. Still, Tyris is perfectly playable. Gillius is godly btw.

4) magic casting system is way better. self-explanatory

5) magic has actual utility purposes now rather than being plain damage dealers. for instance, casting lvl1 magic quickly is a form of crowd clearing. Ax Battler's lvl 2 magic lets you throw enemies in pits. or gathers up all the enemies into a nice pile so that you can do down stab infinites on them.

6) enemies have more unique attacks and behaviors. for instance, one baddie has great anti-air (like Donovan from SOR2), and I like how the gnomes are actual enemies now

7) The hard difficulty is nice and challenging. 4 enemies on screen most of the time.

I agree with all those. GA1's stages were more memorable. Also, the fireball dragon in GA1 was fun. and of course, Death Adder is the most memorable enemy in the game series.

In GA2, Gillius's spin attack is ridiculous. It has tons of invincibility on startup and ridiculous reach. It's probably the best "back attack" I've ever seen in a beat'em up. It has a bunch of invisible extra reach to the back when you first start it, and hits to the back immediately, so it should be used as a back attack. Also, Gillius has the best reach on all his weapon attacks.
