Should I play this before Earthbound?

I would suggest playing Earthbound first, to be honest. Not the Mother is bad, but it's likely you won't enjoy it as much.

Earthbound is a lot better game and you dont lose anything by playing it over mother.

Anyway, I am playing them in chronological order: Beginnings then Earthbound. I heard little Beginnings references get missed if you play it after Earthbound. Plus, I'd probably be spoiled by the more fluid sequel to play the original easily.

Even now. Beginnings is hard. It's SO grindy and the inventory is awful. You can't tell what is story important, storage is so inconvenient to do, and it's so small I just got the kid with the rocket and he's impossible to level up. He's at like level 1 when you and the enemies are level 20-something. He just dies every three battles and you need to go to the doctor.

Earthbound and Mario RPG have neat comical worlds at least. The final fantasys, legend of dragoon, phantasy star, pokemon all feel the same to me.

I played it after 2 and 3 and it was quite enjoyable.
Not a mandatory game by any means but it's nice.

There's a pretty dope moment where a party member shows up in a vehicle that really got my blood pumping at one point.

It's short as fuck and you never feel the need to check a guide or anything, and the classic Itoi charm is definitely there.

M1 is VERY rough if not familar with famicom jrpgs, if you can't do it don't force yourself. Sometimes the game expects you know where you need to go but it barely tells you, other times it expects you tp figure out puzzles you may not of even heard clues for. Earthbound is more fair, never really pulls that kind of stuff. Also I reccomend playing the fan translation if you aren't already, the official NoA translation is kinda iffy. This makes M1 sound unreasonable and shitty, which you could argue, but it just is dated a bit. Still a great game with tons of charm.

Huge mother fan here, favorite game series actually, if you have any questions feel free to ask and I'll help to the best of my ability.

It's definitely not nearly as good as EarthBound or MOTHER 3, but it's alright for its time. Really archaic and lacking the quality of the rest of the series, but if you're interested, go for it.
Also, get the "easy mode" romhack, saves you an eternity of grinding.

Is this thread a fucking joke? There's nothing difficult about the NES Earthbound. The biggest difficulty is having the constitution to just grind out some levels every so often.

Just use a Game Genie and make your levels 99. JRPG's aren't about challenge anyway, grinding is just a waste of time.

I never had to do it that much when I wasn't using a guide, which is the case for most old JRPGs it seems.

What makes the original Mother so cool anyway is that it all takes place on one integrated world map, and is effectively one of the earlier open world sort of games with how many opportunities for "sequence breaking" there are once you leave Podunk.

Also the game has a better atmosphere than Earthbound, which feels at times to be a parody of Mother. It's less openly silly and a lot more reserved, it takes itself seriously (yet it's not up its own ass) and that does it a lot of credit, since I think it shows a lot of those elements present in both EB0 and EB are better in EB0 when they're played straight and the comedic effect is how ridiculous yet also terrifying they can be on their own, and not the characters basically mugging at the player going "isn't this WHACKY?"

I agree with pretty much everything you said, but I think the reason Mother 1 seems more "serious" and Earthbound more "WACKY" is because of the different translations (I haven't played tomato's translation for M1 though).
All in all I think both of them have their share of funny, weird humor balanced with the disturbing and unsettling, it's Itoi who was behind them both, after all.

Anyway, Mother 1 is really tame compared to other 8bit RPGs. People who complain about the random encounters or "grinding" have probably never played any 8bit RPG before, not just in Famicom but in general.

Easy mode doesn't make the encounters easier, it just makes the game less tedious. The games not hard, but a random encounter every 10 steps gets annoying, you'll realize how boring turn based rpgs can be pretty quickly.

It's a great game, but USE BALANCE PATCHES.

"Mother 25th Anniversary Collection" is a nice mod for the game that balances it and updates the graphics.

Well, Mother 1 has the backstory of the main antagonist on Earthbound, and Mother 3's main antagonist originated on Earthbound, so I'd say they are relevant in that regard.

In terms of gameplay, Mother 1 is just a Dragon Quest clone, what's "unplayable" about Dragon Quest?
Mother 3 is the one with the best gameplay out of the 3 (while still maintaining the typical DQ style turn based combat).
