Just recently bought a PAL Sega Saturn, I know the games are normally expensive as fuck.

Could you recommend me some gems?

Tape down the CD lid and use the swap trick to load CDRs; then go through any list of recommended Saturn games.
Also do a 60hz mod. It's piss easy.

PAL Saturns are actually the best models. They come with the highest quality first party official RGB SCART cables out of the box, and they have pre-made solder points for adding a 50/60hz switch. 60hz will also not fuck up the colours like it does with a Megadrive, the machine will output PAL60 properly even if you only have composite cables.

>>3406836
Fuck off I don't want your bandwagoning ass raising up the prices even more.

On purpose?
>>
>>3407151
People are allowed to purchase a console and games that they're interested in, you don't get proprietary rights to the thing just because you liked it before them, that's arbitrary and immature.

Personally I just burn any games I want to play, the small minority of games on the system that have newer version available I generally own a license for on a newer system anyway.

>is literally advocating for his hobby to die because he perceives new people as a threat to cheap access to games

Let it go anon. If you wanted SEGA Saturn games cheap you seriously should have gotten them between 1999 and 2007. We need more people to join the hobby in order to keep the ball rolling so to speak, and unfortunately prices will never not climb at this point.

>you damage the motor by doing the swap trick

This is an urban legend.

It's the laser that eventually dies, and if the laser dies, the machine won't spin up the motor (as if you had no disc inside the console).
>>
Bulk Slash is fucking great

Check the /v/ recommended games wiki. Most of the retro lists are untouched by reddit.

pal saturn is pretty easy to mod anon. I've modded a model 1 and a model 2. If you get fucked up problems with the screen fucking up when you reset on a model 1 let me know, theres a common problem with the psu thats an easy fix. Most pal games here in aus are pretty cheap but you're hardly getting the best selection of games. best to get an action replay/action replay and modchip and buy/burn jap games. Also ignore these fags

there's nothing wrong with a pal saturn once you mod it

>there's nothing wrong with a pal saturn once you mod it

well that's the thing. For the same cost you can get one that doesn't need a mod.
>>
>>3409180
not from a pal country you can't
>>
Picked up Princess Crown for $45, is that a good deal?
>>
>>3409412

Standard. I'm seeing some that sold for a little over $30 after shipping on ebay.
>>
>>3409412
One went for 20 bucks on ebay a while back, got outbid on it.
>>
>>3409195
I bought my Japanese saturn for $100 with shipping and a pile of games, an Australian Saturn goes for like $150 on its own. Admittedly I did have to buy a stepdown converter, but it still worked out cheaper.
>>
>>3409005
I've talked to a guy that repairs retro stuff and resells them, most of the time it's the motor on the saturn that is worn down, I honestly think there is a correlation between the swap trick and that part wearing down.

It's easier to just use an AR and pseudosaturn anyway, fuck the swap trick.
>>
Different guy with a PAL Saturn here, it appears to be modded to natively play Japanese games instead of PAL, it came with the Action Replay but when I play PAL games the screen appears to stretch down too far, is there a way to fix this or am I screwed?
>>
>>3409160
Thanks, I'll do that now. Picked a few out already and listed them down so I can focus on them, but ill add a few more games.

Already picked up Tomb Raider CIB for about £3 at a market. Not too bad.

Mod it more so you can switch between modes. If it's set to 60hz /240 lines I wouldn't bother
>>
sega rally championship best racer ever imho
Labotomy trilogy exhumed/powerslave, quake and duke nukem
clockwork knights pretty good if ya into platformers

some aussie whos into chip tune shit has recently discovered a way to soon get an everdrive esque device to work for the saturn so you wont have to scrounge for all the rare games

I've had a Saturn sitting in a box for a few years now. I'm mainly interested in JRPGs and sadly I do not know and probably will never know any Japanese. I know, I know

>Like JRPGs
>Not learning Japanese

That's not the point right now. The point is I own basically no games and any JRPG in English for the console would cost me more than $200 and up.

Should I just sell/trade my Saturn at this point and be done with it? Are the few JRPGs out in NA even worth the ridiculous prices? Should I suck it up and work towards an enviable set of Saturn JRPGs?

Already trying to get my foot in the door with SNES and PS1/PS2.
>>
>>3413292
Just download them anon, saturn is one of the easiest systems to pirate for.

If I'm gonna pirate, I might as well emulate. I'm basically a beginner collectorfag and prefer to own the actual games.
>>
>>3413321

Then yeah, sell it to someone who will put it to good use.
>>
>>3409550
>I bought my Japanese saturn for $100 with shipping

Nowadays it costs 100€ to get a *loose* Japanese Saturn in horrible condition.

For that much you can however get PAL units with all accessories and a copy of Sega Rally or Daytona.
>>
>>3413321
Piracy is a strong word for games that have been out of print for decades. It is basically abandonware.
>>
>>3409774
>when I play PAL games the screen appears to stretch down too far, is there a way to fix this or am I screwed?

The machine is modded into 60hz mode; PAL optimized titles will have the lower part of the screen not displayed that way.

Just suck it up and start buying imports. Other than Daytona and Sega Rally, all JP titles are cheaper than their PAL counterparts. The only PAL exclusive thing I recall that is worth buying is the bonus track on the European release of Baku Baku.
>>
>>3413391
This was 6 months ago anon, also look on ebay right now and you can see cheap japanese saturns
>>
>>3413402
Sure you do! And they are all yellowed to shit with 60€ shipping.
>>
>>3413405
You do realize it us super easy to fix a yellowung console right? As long as the guts are in good condition it doesnt matter. My japanese saturn is in excellent condition, I have never had any problens with ut and the disk drive runs flawlessly.

It's still piracy, but it's not like I'm against it on principle or anything like that. I could care less what others do.

I simply prefer to own original copies. Think I'm gonna do what the other anon said and just sell/trade my Saturn.
