I was probably 4-5 years old when I played this game. Reaching the cathedral and listening to this BGM left such a lasting mark on me. I remember booting up the game and just listening to this track looping for like 20 minutes. Whenever I listen to it, I remember playing the game in my brother's bedroom, I remember exactly where all the furniture was, even the smell of his room.

Although, I played the PAL version (being European) and it plays much slower, making it much more emotional for me.

The awesome iMUSE-powered Monkey Island 2 soundtrack always gets me; I remember when I began noticing all these layers blending in and out of the main composition to create little variations of each theme instead of simply cutting to or crossfading between tracks.

My favorite track pack was the one for pic related; couldn't find a non-special edition video from that section tho

Ahhh yes... brings back memories of sitting in front of the 14" portable TV and hoping and praying that the fucking game would load.

When you heard the Ocean music it was kind of encouraging that the game might actually work.

Funny you mention that, I finally got around to starting Book 2 the other day, after a year.
I'm finding it easier than Book 1, it also actually has a variety in music, unlike in Book 1.
God damn did I get tired of hearing that 1 same song after a while and I thought Book 2 was going to be the same way so I took a long break.
Nothing wrong with the song, I love it, but after a while it drove me nuts.

Since we're on the topic of Shining Force...
This is the song that I love the most in the whole series.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TH_ePPdEKPA

The feeling it gives me is something I can't describe. I know a lot of people, especially on /vr/, love SF2, but I happen to be one of those who enjoy SF1 a lot more, it just has a more serious feeling to it.
I guess you could say the feeling this song gives me, is that you've got a lot to lose, and a lot more hardships to overcome.

Wishing on a dream that far off

Hoping it will come today

Into the star light night, foolish dreamers turn their gaze, waiting on a shooting star

but, what if that star is not to come? will their dreams fade to nothing?

when the horizon darkens most, we all need to believe there is hope

is an angel watching closely over me?
can there be a guiding light Ive yet to see?

I know, my heart should guide but there's a hole within my soul.

What will fill this emptiness inside of me?

Am I to be satisfied without knowing?

I wish, then, for a chance to see,
Now all I need, (desperately)

Is my star to come...

I recently played through the first Shining Force again for the first time in years and I think I understand where you're coming from. The music is a big part of the storytelling, fitting each scenario perfectly in a way that just sweeps over you. Considering how often the battle themes restart, it's a testament to the score that anyone even wants to listen to them after the game is over. I finally noticed that the battle theme that plays in the circus tent is a remix of the town theme, and I also appreciated the laid-back ship battle theme far more than I did when I was younger.

Personally, I'm with you on the first game beating out the second. I know it's piss easy and the story is about as generic as it gets, but the world-building is fantastic. Every town, especially in the first half, feels unique, and not just because it's a home to different NPCs or recruitable characters. The towns have memorable, often optional, events, like when you splash the girl's dress with mud so that she pushes you into the water so you can get the chest, or when you help the man pull the fishing line out of the water, or the entirety of Manarina, where a man attempts to summon his worst nightmare, which just ends up being his wife, and a wizard turns Max into a chicken, so you get to run around talking to everyone in sight, seeing what their new dialogue will be. Reading the ridiculous book titles off the shelves and seeing the play about the Shining Force change after the circus tent and walking around Shade Abbey again or even grinding Bleu to a usable level for the first time in my life never felt like a chore. It felt good. The game is tightly constructed and full of an innocent black-and-white heroism that likely wouldn't work if the soundtrack didn't make it come alive. The art helps too. I've seen the word "whimsy" used to describe the game a lot recently, and I think it fits perfectly.

I agree, the music of SF1 adds a damn lot to the game. Have you played the GBA remake?
A lot of people on here will shit all over it because it's GBA, but I thought it was great.
I really enjoyed the soundtrack on that one as well, especially its version of the World Map 1 theme. I don't think anyone's uploaded that soundtrack to YouTube yet, I can't find anything.

True proof that this game is even more underrated than most people recognise. The song gets everything right: peaceful, regal, and grand. Hearing it gave me such a huge sense that I had arrived somewhere important, and it's the only "go visit the King!" segment of any RPG that I've ever cared about.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qdky4NDCmqA&ab_channel=Candid

Because Motoi Sakuraba has always been the hype battle man. I remember playing this on my little game boy and getting totally absorbed in the final doubles' tournament matches, which were hard as fuck.

There's so much good videogame music I love. As great as songs from Bare Knuckle 1 & 2 or Thunderforce 4 & 5 are to me and even memorably badass tracks like the ones in FInal Fatnasy Tactics. I think the titles in this picture has music which really does bring memories flooding back to me.

Chrono Trigger: All the songs are great, but especially those which surround Zeal, there's imperative, there's magic, and wonder.

Ys series on TurboDuo: epic, rocking yet smooth, made playing these games amazing every time

R4: Ridge Racer Type 4: That feeling just in the zone late past midnight with neon lights making streaks in the air ...

PSO and RO: I had my time with these games, met great people, tested and felt the progress of my Japanese. It is a time I will never experience again, but the songs will remind me of all the good times.
