Memorizing ring placement helps, but one of the big problems is the existence of Tails. If you're playing single player, you either want to be careful that his delayed movement doesn't result in him crashing into a bomb, or you should disable him altogether.

It's also a bit easier to collect the rings if you have someone competent pick up the second controller for the special stages.

because if i'm playing something on my phone then it's because i've literally no other options. if i'm going to plug in some random controller to something that isn't the native console to play Sonic then i'll just play on PC. i don't feel like lugging around a controller just in case i feel like playing Sonic on the bus, but thank you for your input anyway.

There are gamepads that are literally no thicker than your phone. Both would easily take up less space in your pocket than a wallet, assuming you're not poor.

i'd be down for that. i've been playing through a few Sonic games recently, and the various versions/remasters/alterations have gotten my interest. i'm most used to the slow PAL release of Sonic 1, but it'd be nice to have a version with a toggle on which release you want to play.

This. It's easy to accidentally have him running into bombs. Also, disabling him means you get smaller ring goals. For example, if you're running through the last special stage on single-player, you have to get 100, 150 and 190 rings. But if you have both Sonic and Tails, the ring goals are bigger; 100, 190 and 210.
