The late 90s and early 2000s were unequivocally the prime years of video game modding, when a dedicated team of random boobs working in their spare time could churn out a game that stood on its own, engine aside, on-par with or better than that produced by paid game developers. I know I missed some good ones. What were your favorite hl1 mods?

In any case, the forum shutdown was inevitable as the majority of the developers were pretty discontent with the community by the end and clearly had no interest in attempting to sustain it. Really, if anything, TSRP may have kept it alive a little longer than if not, as the rp-fags had the kind of organization to bother to put up forums and shit that regular players wouldn't have cared to do.

That said, it didn't face nearly the kind of self-destruction that the firearms forum debacle caused.

Natural Selection came a lot later, but it's still damn impressive to me as an HL1 mod. I still think it has the absolute best mapping I've ever seen in Goldsrc. The texturing and attention to detail/atmosphere is perfect, and I was blown away when I first played it and got to crawl on ceilings and in vents as a sneaky alien. (I never played the AvP games in multiplayer).

I highly recommend half-quake sunrise if you haven't played it already. Pretty much the entire mod is mapping and atmosphere, and it's done very well.

The first attempt at a remake, FA2, spawned after a hack and takeover of the original forums that pretty much destroyed what was left of the community. After FA2 dragged on under the absent leadership of an asshole who was only good at playing games and not making them, with no real progress, another offshoot started up, called firearms: source, with the backing of several and direct involvement of a few of the original FA developers. After a couple years, they actually managed to release a playable mod, but there were massive bugs with the first release. If I remember correctly, somehow the fact that your accuracy didn't change at all, regardless of whether you were prone, running, or in the air, slipped past all of the alpha testers and developers. A public alpha was released but by this point several changes in leadership and the usual drama had taken its toll, and only a few people were actually around testing the game. I don't think there's been an update in years, although there are a small number of people still playing. A few of them even are attempting to keep developing the game, but without any access to the source material, and the age of the source engine at this point, they're restricted entirely to finishing placeholder content and modifying existing weapons, so it's unlikely to see a big resurgence.

I loved FA and FA:S, but even being older, the original hl1 mod, at version 3.0, had much more polish and cohesiveness than the source port ever did. I'm OP by the way, and this is exactly what I was referring to when I mentioned the part about circa 2000 being the golden age of modding. The original FA had far more variety in weapons, features, and maps than even the ubiquitous counter-strike at the time. But the fact of the matter is that an unpaid team of hobbyists simply doesn't have the capacity to compete with the kind of money and resources that exist in the gaming industry today. People won't play an unpolished game, even if it's free.

The loadout system and sheer variety in Firearms on goldsrc is what I found most fun about it. In a strange way, part of the appeal was the lack of polish. You could experiment instead of being funneled into a cookie cutter play style for the sake of "balance". It was janky but unique.
