Can I get some spoiler free tips for Final Fantasy Tactics? I played Advance and this is pretty different, anything I need to know?
>>
Use two save slots. There will be a fight in the story with a save and if you don't manage to win that, you can't go elsewhere to grind abilites you might need.
>>
>>3396507

get genji stuff. Steal if you have to.

Ninja's catch ability is really underrated.

You might need to grind your NPC squad a little bit. Everyone needs to learn how to do apply a basic potion, JP up and Move +1.

There's no other battles I can do yet! I remember I did it before a while back but this time he just won't stop going ham

1. Keep one Chameleon Robe in reserve even after it's been made obsolete to other gear for mages
2. Have one Squire master the job early on - it's pretty useful
3. Max out Bravery on as many melee units as possible
4. Get your mages' Faith up to around the upper 80s if you can
5. Shirahadori is love, Shirahadori is life
6. Mystics are overrated
7. Summoners are great

Calculators are OP as fuck. Equip your team with the armor that absorbs holy damage and spam the shit out of Holy.
>>
>>3396629

FFT is especially bad in regards to the stupid NPC escort stage
>>
If you see an enemy with a ton of gear that you want, don't bother stealing it all. Instead, you should invite him into your party, strip the gear, and then boot him. I did this all the time. Mediators are such fun.
>>
To get Cloud you must be in Chapter 4, and you must have Mustadio in your (active) party. 2. Go to the bar in Zeltennia Castle located in the Northeast part of the map. Listen to the rumor of the Cursed Island, Nelveska
>>
>>3397000

Cloud sucks as an FYI
>>
>>3396958

>>
>>3396958
you actually dont need to grind in FFT as long as you use OP jobs like monk. Also just abuse Ramza's Accumulate/Yell
>>
>>3396982
not nearly as bad as TO
>>
Yep, Ramza Monk is OP. I did 400 damage twice for most of the game with ol' Ramza. Lol, Lucavi no probs.
>>
>>3396507
>>3396958
>>3397102
Any time I start another playthrough of FFT, I go full autistic and max out the starting job classes at the first random battle space where chocobo's spawn, before dong an story progression.

1. Box in or corner a chocobo.
2. Kill all other baddies.
3. Keep the chocobo at low enough health that it only uses chocoheal.
4. Grind jp by having your characters slap each other, utilizing the chocobo to keep your characters healed.
5. Repeat ad nauseum.

The biggest thing to note about FFT is that random battles match your character level, where as story missions have set levels. You can get to the point where even story bosses are no threat, but you'll still get your shit rocked by rando's.

So, guys, everyone knows this game is broken as fuck.
Any ideas on how to fix/balance it?
>>
>>3397153
>remove calculator
>remove stat growth but penalize the player for leveling abilities with stronger bosses thematically it works, the lucavi grow stronger with the more blood that's spilled in the war
>either balance the kinds of jobs that appear in enemy formations or make the weaker jobs like archer more threatening
>control the availability of items and equipment more strictly
>allow enemies to have access to more powerful synergies
>in general, buff the enemy units/bosses in situations where you outnumber them or have the opportunity to control the start of the fight and strike first

most of the easiness comes with the fact that there are some really powerful synergies that the enemy simply does not use.
>>
>>3397105
Well, that actually depends on what version you're playing. WotL raised the level requirements for a lot of jobs.
>>
>>3397153
>>3397237
Final Fantasy Tactics 1.3 was a pretty great romhack most notable for its self-proclaimed "Insane Difficulty" but which also implemented a number of changes to make less-viable units more viable. Unfortunately some of the changes fall a bit short and most of the old OP combos are still OP. However, it's still really creative; they changed up Black magic and some of the damage formulas completely.

I played the 'easy' version of FFT1.3 and got stuck on one of the Celia and Lede fights and just gave up
>>
>>3397271
A lot of these rebalances like 1.3 have good ideas on how to balance things of.
But they do the crime of level-scaling every fight to your party's level, completly neglecting the point of a level system in a RPG.
The game gets HARDER as you level up.
>>
>>3397306
>being this casual
>>
>>3397308
srsly, what is the point of a level system if EVERYONE ELSE also gets stronger when you level up?
Might as well remove stat growth completely.

It's like TESIV: Oblivion all over again...
>>
>>3397316
>what is the point of a level system
What is the point? Leveling, exp, stat fetishism and all the RPG tropes add nothing of value to a strategy game when you think about it. If anything they detract

I haven't played 1.3 and loathe FFT, but if it prevents grinding that alone makes it a slightly more polished turd
>>
>>3397316
It breaks verisimilitude because while you spend months grinding in game everyone else just does nothing and sits there waiting for you to show up, maintaining the exact same strategies and techniques without changing them.

Take for example a MMORPG where everyone starts playing on the same day, you can grind your stats as much as you want, but if everyone else can do the same thing how do you get ahead? The key here is that you have to grind efficiently and effectively. Rather than just pouring time and autism into your activity, you have to come up with some sort of tactics and strategy to make the most of the effort you do put in.

In Oblivion you can max out one discipline instead of all 3 and just become a murder machine by efficiently using the tools at your disposal, but if you max out everything you better be prepared to synergize all of it, using say, a weapon that reduces magic resistance and a poison that saps the enemy's stamina and speed, and a magic spell that blasts them with elemental touch-range damage, using stealth and agility to pull it all off.

There is actually an entire series of unforgiving jRPGs that will brutally penalize you for grinding without any concept of efficiency >>3314313

tl;dr version: you're a filthy fucking casual is why
>>
>>3396507
Check CT often.

Item is a good secondary at any part of the game.

Be creative with your set ups, anything works in this game and that's part of the brilliance of the design decisions.

When selecting a spell or ability from the menu you can press Left or Right on the D-Pad to see when it will go off on the turn order.

To everyone talking about 1.3you can ignore this shitty stolen mod and just play Laggy Fantasy Tactics instead which does a better job at balancing the game while not having the same stupid design decisions that 1.3 had. That or you can just play 1.3030 the last good version.

>>
>>3397153
Play LFT, it's pretty much the best FFT mod that isn't a total conversion

http://www.rpgdl.com/forums/index.php/topic,2452.0.html

I should shill EZ-8, but that probably won't be right, being that I spawned it

>>3397341
>I haven't played 1.3 and loathe FFT, but if it prevents grinding that alone makes it a slightly more polished turd
Grinding for levels never particularly did much in FFT.

Even in 1.3, you end up grinding for JP anyway.
>>
>>3398260
Might as shill it now Davzz and give everyone a link.
>>
>>3398267
Guess I might as well.

https://ontlogy.wordpress.com/fft-ez-8-mod/

So as a quick summary on this mod - Originally, this was intended to be just an easier 1.3 with a whole bunch of "quality of life" ASM additions like text fast forward, being able to send uniques on propositions and so on.

But over time it kind of just morphed into its own Morbol after I got frustrated with trying to tone down Chapter 4 with gradual changes and just decided to clonk it with a hammer.

I also tried to make a lot of items/characters/etc more viable - I take a different philosophy to balance in that I don't really care if you "break" FFT as long as you have to put SOME effort into it - I rather there be some missions you can break in 5 minutes rather than every battle be a 2 hour slog.
>>
>>3398290
Good shit, I might try it since I love it when creators take that type of design philosophy. It's a lot better than everything needs to super hard slogs.
>>
>>3396629
Start over & focus on getting Ramza xp up to that point. Everyone other unit you have will be mediocre at best. Only keep them around as meat shields for Ramza & any NPC you need to protect until you can start getting your own units.
>>
>>3397153
>Dat Knight Monk
>>
>>3396507
Learn Scream and break the game
>>
>>3398303
Not that guy but my own goal is to make everything a fast, chaotic clusterfuck of strategy collisions and tactics improvisation when things go south in the middle of a fight.

I like to make it so that there is a high probability of getting completely wiped out if you make mistakes, but I also like it when this happens quickly and decisively. Sort of like a SaGa game, I want there to be a point of high friction where you're not sure if you can beat the backslide you're on and Recover/Cripple the Enemy/Decrease their numbers, but for it to be a devastating turn when either side starts gaining momentum. To this end I nerfed almost nothing and buffed everything that was lacking or not comparable. I was quite pleased with the way the enemy AI would be able to abuse mimics as well, especially if I toyed with the flags a lot.

My estimation for when I'll finish it is probably fucking never
>>
>>3396629
the correct decision is to leave him to die and focus on the enemy

no really

the game rewards you for abandoning him
>>
>get stuck a few fights after the Dorter Slums
>find out that you have to grind and have your team beat each other up if you want to stand a chance
>turn game off

Nah
>>
>>3399750
???

There are lots of people who have made it through the game without grinding and without fighting anything but the story battles. You don't have to and fighting a few random battles makes it easier but it's hardly impossible or even that terribly difficult.

By the time the game even gets hard it starts handing you all kinds of overpowered special units that make everything even easier.

All you gotta do is not max out. Just use your jobs until you get better ones that have the abilities you want then use those until you get those abilities.

Maybe look up a chart of what jobs you need to get other jobs if you're desperate.

You even get Wizard and Priest right of the bat if you train your chemist even like a little bit, not even a lot, not a lot at all, and why the hell wouldn't you be using your chemist? Items and throw potion are great.
>>
>>3399750
You beat what is considered to be the hardest fight in early game and get walled a few fights later? That's amusing.

>>
>>3399750
>grind to a high level after beating the first area you have to cross back over to get to dorter slums
>fight the marsh/swamp fight before it
>get destroyed because enemies are my level
From that point on I grinded after beating that level..

Not be too OP is right - Arm Aim is about the only decent thing about him and it's not even that strong of a move

(Seal Evil might as well be replicated by throwing a Phoenix Down for the most part)

In return - he can't go on propositions like all Specials. That's not really a good trade.

Mustadio was a fucking shill. I only even kept him in the party because of side-quests that require him. Honestly, I was all about my custom guys that I raised from the ground up. I preferred being able to make custom job combos. Strange things like Monk/Lancer were a lot of fun. Fast as fuck, jump, and lancer damage with unarmed. I just wish raising monsters was worth more than just farming them for poaching. I tried doing the beast master thing and it turned out to be garbage by the end of chapter 2.

HOT TIPS

Read that turn order

Make sure most of your units have jump+1 and move+1 and alternate between them as the map requires

Try giving concentrate to a melee class

Try giving weapon breaking to a ranged class

Stealing from enemies can allow you to gain overpowered gear early before it becomes available in shops

Have someone who can poach/secret hunt and make sure to deploy them in random battles

Blade grasp on a high brave character makes them virtually untouchable except by spells, summons, and sword skills

The enemy can see their odds of hitting you, but they can't see any counter abilities you have equipped, and will walk into battle even if a counter hit would get them killed.

Hamedo sounds useful, but isn't worth it. It doesn't work on non-human enemies and it has much much lower odds of triggering than counter does

successfully performing an action earns you job points for the job you have assigned, not the job the actions originate from. Casting black magic as a knight will get you knight JP, not black Mage JP. Get squire's accumulate and put basic skill in your second ability slot while assigned another job to easily grind points for that job.

Every time someone gains JP, a small amount (10-20%) of JP for their assigned job will bleed over to all other units they're deployed with. You can grind JP in any job by deploying with people who have that job, but you still can't be assigned that job or spend the JP until you fulfill the prerequisite levels required to unlock that job in the first place
>>
Not Poacher above but a few more warm tips

Seriously keep at least TWO saves. A few battles between.

Move +1, JP Gain, Potion for everyone.

Make a knight into a monk and then a ninja, then a samurai and use the Two Swords skill.

Turn your mage into an all-around mage. Then, a calculator.

Use the turn list religiously.

If you didn't know this, check your attack hit % before you make an offensive move, it appears just over your character's portrait, but it's sort of small.

Strip ALL named NPCs when they join you. Give your permanent dudes all the awesoem gear and give the mandatory or temprary NPCs a bunch of wack gear.

Catch is SUPER useful in the end game when ninjas toss rare samurai swords instead of shurikens.

Monsters reproduce in your army, you need to manage them religiously.

Don't use Orlandu

I wouldn't recommend 1.3 to a new player either though. That was just more a statement to everyone talking about 1.3 in the mod.

>>3401750
I'm a bit drunk right now but, I'll give you a quick write up. There's a few different reasons shit on 1.3. The biggest one relating to what 1.3030 is the last 'good' version is that it has strayed away from its original goal. Originally the 1.x series was a community mod worked together by a large group of people. What this mod aimed to achieve was balancing the game without adding extreme changes.

So the first few revisions went well, some odd quirks, before it became 1.3 which was a hit as you know. It was a huge step forward, however, this asswipe named Archael was a mod on the project and kept pushing for these ridiculous changes that strayed from the original goal. Somehow he ended up pissing off the administration of the forum that was hosting it and created it and then when they soft banned him from the IRC he stole it saying he was the main creator and should be credited for it. He claimed that he had done everything and even created the tools, which is another huge joke for another story, and then started putting in his retarded ideas without moderation. He made the mod something it wasn't, and arguably worse than what it was at 1.3030.

In short, retarded sidewinder ends up with full creative control and ruins a community project with shitty design decisions.
>>
Spell users should increase their faith and magic attack stat. faith determines the accuracy of most spells the exception being Mediator. Oracles can use the Pray Faith spell to temporarily have 100 faith. This makes almost all moves hit and they are much more powerful.

Also the speed stat determines the accuracy of stealing and the power of archers but who uses those lol.
>>
>>3401817
Also wanted to add (thanks ulillillia) that archers have a very broken skill called speed save. It increases your speed every time a character is attacked based on bravery. So you can stand around in a group bopping each other and easily get insane broken speed.
>>
>>3401821
Critical quick is better.
>>
>>3401831
Depends on the set up your team is going for. Unless we are talking about the quickening.
>>
>>3401831
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=io9sTfstGzI
huh neat.
but it looks like it requires more things to keep track of to set up. speed save is moron proof.
>>
>>3401849
>>3401846
>>3401831

Quick is a status effect of sorts that gives you the next active turn. Quick status can be gained by having the spell 'Quick' successfully cast on you or by having the reaction ability 'Critical Quick' triggered. The triggering of Critical Quick occurs when the unit with the ability equipped receives damage that leaves them with under 20% of their max HP.

While Critical Quick might not seem that great there are situations when it is the best reaction ability in the game. For a more reliant way to gain Quick, learn it for 800 JP from the Time Mage skill set. Quick costs 24 MP which might be a little costly but has decent speed (25) and a decent formula (targetsfaith*castersfaith*(MA+140)). Rig some zodiac compatibility between your group and Quick can be very reliable and fun to use.

Quick can be reflected (though not Math Skilled) but the most interesting thing about it is that it can be Counter Magicked! Seriously, that exclamation point isn't one of the fake ones that should be a period, I actually used to get giddy when considering this. Look at the spells that can be Counter Magicked:

- All Black Magic except Fire 4, Ice 4, and Bolt 4

- Holy, Dark Holy

- Yin-Yang Magic except Pray Faith and Doubt Faith

- Slow, Slow 2, Don't Move, Quick, Stop, Demi, Demi 2, Meteor

- Bio, Bio 2, Bio 3

- Melt, Tornado, Quake

- Attacks from the Blaze Gun, Glacier Gun, and Blast Gun

So just how does Quick fit into all this? With the proper setup you can orchestrate a near-endless chain of Quicks within your team ( sometimes referred to as The Quickening ) , acting and acting while almost no in-game time passes and the enemy sits there staring at your chain of constant action.

Ramza: "Restore lost time in a spiral line! Quick!"

There's is an item copy trick that let's you make copies of one-off BiS items. It only works in the original PSX version. This breaks the fucking game for how easy it makes it.

Giving Calculators max black magic skills and intelligently casting flares almost breaks the game.

Carefully decide between heavy specialized secondary items and the dodge capes. The dodge capes give you less damage/utility (significantly less) but outright dodging lethal damage is almost priceless.

Once you hit Act/Chapter III, start. Fucking. Grinding. And do not stop. Like >>3396534 said, there is a story fight that is quite literally one of the hardest fights mechanically AND numerically in any RPG, and the only real advantage you can have is levels.

Use whatever class you want, but tons of them are basically useless except to get job skills from (like Ninja--it's only good for two-swords).
If you want an optimized play through, don't use anything except knights, monks, summoners, and time mages for end game--only dip into the other classes long enough to open up advanced classes you need skills from. Important skills are catch/steal from thief, two-swords from ninja, and the faster turn order thing from time-mage. Everything else is strictly tertiary.
