Hey everyone, I've just been getting into the Umihara Kawase series and I wanted to have a general discussion thread. Does anyone have any tips for how to get good at the games? The grapple mechanics are really cool but also really tough.

That's really it. Just play and you'll get the hang of it. It happened very naturally for me. If you have a specific question ask, but UK is a game that you won't pick up immediately.

I've been playing on emulator with a keyboard and I think that's complicating things. I have the hardware to play original copies so I might just bite the bullet and buy them.

There was a bit of discussion about it in the Vita general on /vg/ when it came out there. You could ask in their and pretend you're talking about the Vita version (it's just a remake, mostly, right?)

Practice, practice, practice. Learn the techniques, quickest way to beat some field, and just understand the grapple mechanics. Kintyorru has some videos on mechanic but they're a little hard to find since it's all in japanese.

Do you guys know that old /co/ comic where the /co/fags would find a waifu and would all hover around her, but then some new waifu appears and everyone would just flock to the new one and left the other old behind and alone. And then find a newer one, etc ad infinitum

Well I feel like Umi was /vr/'s first and now everyone is forgetting her and going towards Mail from Popful Mail. I wonder who's going to be the third one, maybe Eriko from Yu-No.

If I could find that comic I would probably re-draw it into a /vr/ themed one.

Dude, you just made realize I have a DS lite laying around with a shitty flashcard that I never bothered to try the DS game on.

I luckily found the necessary files online, going to give the game a try, see if it works.
I only played Sayonara on 3DS and tried the original but didn't have a gamepad for my computer before.

I don't think it's fair to consider a TAS skill.

>>3391304

>>
>>3408176
I managed to install everything without problems, thank god.
Rom seems to work just fine too, I'm so glad but I feel a bit dumb too, why did I not try this any sooner?

But anyway, I'm glad I can experience the other games too, you really notice the difference in rope physics which is going to take some time to get used to.
Though I really like the physics in the first game a lot, seems a bit easier to do complex jumps compared to Sayonara.

Shun also looks kinda nice, visually, not amazing but it just looks appealing to me.

>The grapple mechanics are really cool but also really tough.

They probably wouldn't be very cool if they were made easier, as it would dumb down the gameplay.
Anyway, I have been playing the original a bit more lately, it is tough but it doesn't even take very long to get the grapple mechanic down to a point where you can easily swing across a the bottom of platforms

It's so rewarding when you try a complicated swing and it works exactly how you want it.

That's practically $10,000+ revenue per game minimum.
There's a reason Degica bought it when the publisher went bankrupt.

Also, compare your pic to the actual steamdb graph. They all went up, a lot. Your image sounds like it was made before a winter sale, where PC Gamers actually buy games

I was reading this interview from the creator.
http://www.usgamer.net/articles/indie-before-it-was-cool-the-umihara-kawase-story
Then I come across this part:
>Despite the intricacy of Umihara Kawase's design, Sakai feels his work went largely unnoticed. "A group of core fans and people who were interested in programming really praised the game," he recollects with evident disappointment. "But I feel like, in general, there weren’t that many people out there who noticed the physics."

I feel a bit disappointed and seeing the steam sales just confirms that these games are not popular at all.
I doubt it will ever change, I doubt skill-based games like these will ever become popular.
Not that I want Umihara Kawase to be the next big hit, just a bit more love would be nice, a bit more attention from other parts of the gaming community and maybe a little more certainty about the game's future.
From a technical standpoint, surely there are enough possibilities for a continuation.
>>
>>3412628
Yeah I don't honestly expect this series to become the next big thing anytime soon, but after 20 years I would expect to gather a little bit of a niche market. Right now it's beyond niche or cult following, no matter how you look at it, these are very small numbers.

I was honestly expecting for steam players to embrace it way more than this, specially when it got some buzz in the news when they pulled the games from steam and then degica reinstated them.

Nothing new here. Look at the money and entrants in fighting games. The numbers pale in comparison to League. It's always been this way and that will never change. Games that require time to get the full potential out of just can't be as popular as easier, just as fun, games.

Total longshot, but what about fanart of Den-Sen? It was also a Kiyoshi Sakai game, but it got cancelled before it had a chance to come out. Really interesting concept, too -- girl who slides across powerlines in Tokyo with a coat hanger.

As an added benefit, if he's moved enough by it, maybe he'll even release the game for vita or something.

Looks good, that's kinda how I envsioned her too.

The game looks fun but I don't really understand how the gameplay would work, at least how it would keep fun for longer times because from the trailer alone it does look like it gets a bit stale after a while and you seem quite limited in your movements.

But I'm definitely interested in it.

The art style and environment in Densen are a perfect match with Umihara's surreal urban japanese setting. I agree about the gameplay which looks very hard to develop a game around. I see that the girl has some freedom of movement but she needs to stay on-rails to line up with the electric wires. Like Umihara it would have been focused on the unique controls which look very fun like a kawaii rollercoaster ride. I would love to play it someday or at least see better video.

I'm still really curious about the game, but that's partly due to it being so mysterious.
Though I really like this kind of setting and the surreal environments, as in Umihara.

Would love to hear more of the concept from Sakai himself but what are the odds this ever happening?
>>
>>3423164
Significantly higher if we send him a card or something themed around it.

Studio Saizensen (Kondo + Sakai's company) has their address publicly on the internet, so it shouldn't be too hard. I also know Japanese (and have many native speaker friends) so I can translate a message if needed.

That would be a super good image for the front of the card, by the way.

I'm thinking nothing too big or extravagant, just something nice and full of love.
>>
Possible ways to contribute:
>Write something nice about your experience with UK, or just something nice in general
>Draw a cute little sketch about Den-Sen/Umihara
>If you have any questions you wanted to ask to the creators, post them generally here.

I was thinking it'd be a small, few-page post-card that you can open up, has some nice pictures and messages, and then a short piece of writing at the end that summarizes our questions or general words of thanks. Of course, let's try not to ask more than a couple of questions. Let's not make things hard on them.

I think a theme that they'd appreciate is fans from outside of Japan.
>>
>>3423172
>Let's not make things hard on them.
This, let's focus more on thanking them and not dump a list of questions on them, we don't want to come across as a bumch of uppity internet nerds who demand answers.

Also, to those of you around who might be thinking "oh but I can't draw at all" but wish to contribute, try it.
This is not about making a beautiful piece of artwork, it's about showing appreciation, a little sketch or doodle, even if it looks a bit clumsy, can get the message across.
So don't worry about your capabilities and write something nice if you want.
>>
>>3423202
Honestly I think the only question should be "Do you have any more information about Den-Sen?" because there's absolutely nothing on the internet about it, and anything more specific would be a bit pushy.
>>
>>3423209

>>
How about mixing some /int/ into it and draw your country's version of Umihara? Cute girl, fishing pole, walking food, maybe some pieces of your local countryside and nostalgia to past decades, you know. You can even localize the title to something that sounds incredible stupid in your native language. I think it would be a nice and fun way to show love from over the world.
>>
>>3423468
That might be a fun idea.
I'm from the Netherlands myself but I suck at drawing.
I'll try to cook something up though, I have some ideas.

Anyway, do we need to set some kind of deadline?
Or wait for a few more people to show their support.

I've been messing around on it myself and it's taking a while to get used to working with it. Hopefully he's working hard on a new version already with more options and things to create more extreme level designs in.

Outside the first they are awful ports though so people like me cannot really recommend them. The Sayonara port is rendered BELOW the 3DS resolution and also to many people, this is their first time playing the first game and are still trying to beat that too.

Speak for yourself.
Anyone with an emulator could have potentially known about this game, even more so for those who had the entire ROM set.
>>
>>3434028
You are stupid, how are you going to be confused as to why its not popular and say some shit like that? In the emulation scene most people play games they played during their youth and games in that series they missed. Everyone else buys the physical media which without hardmodding the Super Nintendo is region locked. They don't explore Japan exclusive games. It doesn't help that the newest game in the series is the ugliest and the worst port of any game I have ever played. The only relevance it has right now is VR support which is a novelty. Also downloading ROMsets is lazy hoarder faggotry.

>In the emulation scene most people play games they played during their youth and games in that series they missed.
Or they play games recommended by other users, with emulation being the cheapest way to do this.

Unless you live in a PAL region, it's literally just breaking a bit of plastic.

The recommendations other users make are based on what they have played. You are overestimating the population, most people think being able to build your own computer makes you a rocket scientist, they aren't going to do a hardmod. And I only mentioned that it is for lazy hoarders because most people who download those packs are lazy hoarders. Read; they don't play anything outside Super Mario World and Zelda. Of the thousands of games, what are the odds they pick a game called 海腹川背?
>>
>>3434106
>And I only mentioned that it is for lazy hoarders because most people who download those packs are lazy hoarders. Read; they don't play anything outside Super Mario World and Zelda.

Bullshit
people who want to play mario and zelda don't download entire romsets. they download mario and zelda.

people who download romsets do try new stuff from time to time. most of it? doubtful. all of it? nah. but the chances of someone playing something new to then instead of "mario and zelda" is way bigger than whatever you think it is

That's the glory of the internet. People from all over the world (including eastern countries) can recommend games that the rest of the world might not know about.

All ROMsets tend have Japanese naes written in romaji, but you'd be surprised. Some of us tend to load a ROM at random if we're bored enough.

I was told by others back before then in the early 2000s that Umihara Kawase was a good game. So I bought them, and to this day I still have not even bothered to play them. I even got the ones in the Humble Bundle and logged 0 seconds on those too. I wish I had the time to play, but tonight is dedicated to cleaning the home and laundry (and maybe some Actraiser for the umpteenth time).

Yes I had always thought the image character was a boy until now, but now that I know, changes nothing.

That is a very reasonable request, I hope I do get in the mood to play it. I'm always distracted but I will try. I was just reinforcing the notion earlier as to why the games may not have been so popular, as even I have the ROMs, have the new PC editions, even have the actual games, and was still too lazy to even give them a try.

>>3435043
I thought each game had a different protagonist. With the Sayonara release, I thought they changed to a female character to cash in on "anime waifu" market. I never really looked that close at the PS cover. Also, I'm posting on 4-chan so I assumed it was the usual horridness of "same but female" art, like how rule 34 makes female characters have penises. I ... am a well adjusted person, like the rest of 4chan. Believe it or not, it was the constant art on these Umihara Kawase threads and I started thinking "damn, there are a lot of pictures of the main character with big breastuses ... oh my gawd, I think the main character IS a girl" and then I took the PS game out (to make that picture) and I did see.

Yumi's Odd Oddysee has problems. It has different physics, more forgiving design (removal of lives), weird quicktime button which trivializes reflexes, and way too much fucking ice everywhere making it feel more railroaded. I think the first game is a better game

That only spoils the joy of reaching new fields, the game mode with lives is still there and you need to complete it to mark endings as cleared.

The survival challenge is pretty easy compared to the first two games and extra backpacks are incredibly abundant as well.
>>
>>3444032
>vita version
>level 33
Also you only start with 3 lives, so even though there's a ton of backpacks, you have to go through some serious trouble to get a number of them. Considering this, it balances out with the other two games where you start out with 10 lives.
>>
Here's a romhack of the original, which includes:
>all levels linked together into one route
>30 minute rule removed
>start with 50 backpacks
>unused enemies added to some levels

I almost never hear about game emulation. for one, games journalists are all but forbidden to mention it. the biggest venue for spreading word about obscure games, Youtube, is completely supine when it comes to takedown requests by rights holders. And Nintendo is fast and sloppy with the ban hammer.

Thirdly, the number of people who have a computer is probably dropping, as most of the functionality is covered by owning a game system and a smart phone. Emulation works on neither of these, unless you know about jailbreaking. Most people don't. Again, legal grey area squashed by industry gatekeepers acting like jealous husbands.
>>
>>3452810
I always just climb up the left wall on this level. It's too much trouble going all the way right then swinging across the falling platforms.
