Are you still able to enjoy early polyginal games in this day of age?
Im mostly refering to PS1 and N64 games
You think those are early polygonal games? This is an early polygonal game.

non-polygonal 3D engines are cooler

Jesus, this game is so abstract. The days before genres were so clearly set in stone produced some really interesting gameplay ideas.
>>3386270
genres still aren't set in stone. Devs just don't bother, or are too clueless
N64: Very much yes
PS1: Hell no

why?

same for you, why?

I'm not aware of affine warping in Descent or Magic Carpet or Screamer
>>3386291
You're remembering wrong.
>>3386297
Dat road has some serious camber going on...
>>3386297
Screamer does not use a clean affine transform

There aren't many female characters in Mario 64 so it's definitely low in polygins count.
Now, Ogre Battle 64 on the other hand...
But even so, if you want a good early polyginal game you might want to play Asuka 120% on Saturn, there's quite a lot of female characters in there, Dead or Alive is also a good choice, but PS has Ayane too so the polygin count is higher than the Saturn version.

game does a good job at hiding it then, I suppose

Try again.

Almost as equally as any 3D PS1 game I guess, and that's mostly because the game's "level design" mostly consists of land and water with a mostly subdued color scheme.
Some are still fun, but for the most part early 3D doesn't age as well as early 2D in my opinion.

yeah, no

Virtua Fighter 2 still holds up amazingly well. It ran in the Saturn's high resolution 704x480 mode and did it at 60fps. In 2016 the higher resolution and framerate makes it look so much better in person compared to other games, like later N64 titles, that were considered graphically "superior" at the time. They might have more polygons and effects but today that low res mess that often struggles to run at even 20fps looks god awful.

So yeah, ironically enough one of the best 3D games of that generation is a fucking early Saturn title.
the problem often is not about "ugly low-poly 3d graphics" but the shitty framerates that many of these games had. If it's smooth, then no problem.
>>3386224
Yeah I suppose a "polygonal" game is from when polygons were a big deal. It's kind of a given from the 32 bit era onwards.
I used to love Castle Master. That was my first experience with polygons in that age. Then Starwing I guess.

Day of age?

I played mario64 for the first time since the 90s a year ago, and I really enjoyed it. I'm currently playing through Parasite Eve on my vita, and I'm enjoying that, too. But if there wasn't any nostalgia associated with those games for me, I probably wouldn't like them as much.

This must've taken some serious wizardry.

Atari st game, Hunter. exceptional polyginal game
I'd rather have the pixelated and melty PS1 graphics over the N64's foggy, blurry and repetitive graphics.
Then there's the argument that PS1 style graphics are in again, while N64 graphics are just bland old 3D.
>>3387019
UltraHDMI and RGB mods that eliminate the blur are available for the N64.
the PlayStation 1 really sucked
>>3387059
You can disable AA on most games using gameshark codes.
>>3386214
>Im mostly refering to PS1 and N64 games
Yeah, I do play many of my favorite 5th gen games almost annually.
Silent Hill, Ocarina Of Time, Mario 64, System Shock 2 ... all just as good (if not better) as back in the days. Pic quite related; could live with just a handful of these titles.
>>3387126
AA is not the issue. In fact, it's one of the better features of N64.
There's just these pointless layers of secondary blur, that really washes out the image in many N64 games. And to that, that new HDMI mod is the fix.
>>3387019
>N64's foggy, blurry and repetitive graphics.
not every N64 game ran on Turok engine.
