Is the PSP the best portable choice for emulation?
No
An N3DS is better, but it's more expensive, doesn't have that based PS1 compatibility and is harder to hack (anything is, really).

What does the 3DS do better than the psp?
The console itself it's not as comfy, but the touchscreen it's an improvement.
As far as emulation goes the PSP does an impressive amount of consoles and old PCs.
The 3DS have a better N64 emulation, but the PSX library is better than the N64 library, by sheer number of games.
>>3378267
Never heard of it, what's so good about it.
The best is an android phone. PSP doesn't have the power for anything past fourth gen. It's still great for GBC/GBA, SNES, NES, Genesis, CPS1/2, Neo Geo, not to mention PSP games and native PS1 playback. Basically if you want N64 you gotta look somewhere else.
>>3378341
The 3DS does not have N64 emulation. It does have better emulation on basically every console the PSP can do due to more up to date software and actually decent SNES Virtual Console, putting it above PSP in that regard.
However, PS1 is PS1.
>>3378341
>Never heard of it, what's so good about it.
Everything except the price.
>>3378238
Get and Android cell phone.
>>3378350
PSP N64 emulation isn't exactly the best. There's maybe a dozen that are slightly playable with audio disabled. Honestly I'm surprised it runs as well as it does since it's just a 333MHz system emulating a 100MHz console.

>>3378362
Well, nobody asked for N64 for any of those either way, the thing is barely workable on a goddamn Wii.Wii U N64 emulation software when
>>3378368
I know, N64 emu in general is shitshow but it seems like the most sought after for handhelds at least
it'd be perfect if it could play SNES. i still love my stinky old PSP.
what's the current state of emulation on vita? is it even possible? i think used systems are about to get affordable soon.
>>3378383
Are you implying that SNES isn't on PSP or just not playable? Because if it's the latter what games are you trying to play and what emulator? Vita has yet to be fully hacked, but suffice to say you can play anything the PSP can on it.
>>3378385
it's just not very playable going by public opinion and the few attempts i made with, i think it was retroarch and SoE
>>3378385
I had bad experiences with the SNES emulators available. GBA/NES emulators are stellar though.
I still have my fat PSP, but the battery life is woeful now. 30 minutes full charge...
Just get a gpd xd. Plays snes games accurately. Also does nes, genesis, master system, psp, ps1, mame and atari shits. N64 emulation is pretty good too suprisingly. And it can play pretty much any android game with physical controls. Its about the size of the n3ds
>>3378423
iirc there was slowdowns in super mario world (at least a couple versions ago) but I played all the donkey kong games with zero lag. either way, worth checkin out
>>3378429
if that's all i'll have to suffer, i'll be happy as they come. looking at 2.5 hours of commuting per day starting with next month.
>>3378427
damn, that thing does look sweet
PSP because of its price, form factor and homebrew scene certainly represents one of the very best values overall yes. There are getting to be a LOT of cheap powerful tablet PCs but still not one with built in controls so you have to deal with choosing your own controller.
>>3378427
>glossy d-pad
How is it? Looks well designed on theory.
>>3378456
Its suprisingly good. A little mushy(so are the buttons), but very responsive. Positioning might be awkward if you have godzilla hands. works great for snes sidescrollers, platformers and rpgs.
>>3378427
It looks really good but I'm a sucker for built-in keyboards, I still have 2 netbooks only for that.
I'll wait for the Pyra to come out and then I'll buy an used open pandora, ATM they're just stupidly expensive.
I have a 3DS and I still use the PSP, mostly because it's rough exterior is less attractive.
Ugly console is safe console.
>>3378427
I heard there's a windows version coming out. I've been thinking of grabbing something like this. How does this do for emulating the paper or ds? I imagine it's not the best but if playable it would be nice.
>>3378495
Ds works pretty damn good. By paper do you mean paper mario? I havent played much of paper mario(on this device), but from what i did play, i only encountered VERY minor slowdown during one fight and once during the first opening scene
Can the PSP handle Nintendo DS emulation? I guess not since double screens fucks the console but i would be neat to play some good DS games on the console
>>3378516
Oh darn it autocorrected to paper. I was trying to say psp
>>3378612
Well it depends on the game as far as psp is concerned. For example, i beat p3p using ppsspp, but i cant get past one of the first scenes in crimson gem saga. But ppsspp is getting almost monthly updates and compatibility is getting much better. Usually you can get most games to run, its just a matter of tweaking settings
>>3378607
You're joking right? It exists as proof of concept but a handheld released a month after isn't going to have the raw power necessary to emulate
As long as you aren't going to play any SNES games.
>>3378628
Most games run fine, quit using dated emulators
>>3378621
Thanks for the help :) Now I just gotta decide which version to get.
>>3378631
"Most games" being everything that isn't Super Mario World.
>>3378238
N3DS is better for everything except PS1. Still a solid choice though.
>>3378635
Completely false
>>3378661
Agreed. Snes emulation on psp sucks dick. Fucking rpgs stutter
>>3378665
What in the fuck are you playing, I've beaten Mystic Quest and Secret of Mana and they NEVER dipped below 40 fps, most of the time sitting between 55-60fps. Quit using Snes9x Euphoria goddamn
So looking at this thread, are SNES games playable on PSP or not what the fuck.
I play mostly PS1, GC/GBA and Genesis so thats not problem for me but would be nice to play Mario RPG or Super Metroid on the go
>>3378670
It's Mode7 that causes the thing to take a shit.
>>3378670
Terranigma, treasure of rudras, smt, fucking lttp, smw, yoshis island. And a fuckton of other games.
And 40fps is complete shit. How is playing a game 30% slower than designed in any fucking world acceptable?
>>3378716
>Terranigma, treasure of rudras, smt, fucking lttp, smw, yoshis island.
Not him but I've played all of those except SMW and Yoshi's Island and had no problems at all except Terranigma losing 15 or something FPS once in a while.
As it has been mentioned before, Mode 7 is what makes a PSP lag, but even then, it depends on a lot of other things, overclocking already solves most of those problems, you can even play Axelay decently on that if you know what to tinker with.
Get a better emulator.
>>3378708
>Secret of Mana
Also, I'm playing on the newest build and games seem to play even better
>>3378687
SHORT ANSWER: No
LONG ANSWER: Sometimes but not really, depending on how much you're willing to overlook.
>>3378238
Nyet. The JXD S7800B is a lot more powerful, versitile, and userfriendly, and it has a huge ass screen. It's not going to fit in your pocket, though. It's more of a handheld for bag people.
The PSP is still very relevant though, because it's small and cheap, and you can play all those nice PSP games on it. It remains a good option.
PSP can PLAY PSP GAMES
HOLY SHIT!
>>3378238
Yes. It is. The year is 1999 (because /vr/ rules) and you have an early prototype. Your dad who works at Nintendo gave it to you for your 3rd birthday. It is hands down the best.
A few years later it's relatively shit.
>>3378741
Funny story.
Back in '07 my sister asked my mother for a PSP that she could take to school. Why a PSP? Because it was a "multimedia device".
Apparently all she knew was that you could put music, videos and pictures on it and she could treat it like a tiny laptop.
Being the little faggot I was, I wanted to see if the PSP was any good but she didn't have any games for it so all I could do was mess around in the XMB.
So one day she comes home and whines at me going "Hurr durr I connected these big sound columns to my PSP and now the sound is all crinkly and it's all your fault." so she stopped bringing it to school.
I took the PSP and downloaded a few official demos from some site and started playing on it, and I actually felt like I was doing something illegal, as if the PSP wasn't supposed to play videogames.
She sold it a week later for weed money or something, I don't know.
I bought one for myself a year later, a Dissidia crystal limited edition. Still works.
This.

Only if you're incredibly poor or stuck in 2008.
>>3380962
You know how some people have punchable faces?
That's how I feel about these controller setups.
>>3380993
Only if you want the most compatible portable PlayStation emulation anywhere, priod.
>>3381002
It's very comfy and that controller is god tier.
>>3381002
That setup truly does look like this. The concept itself isn't fataly flawed but for a product that's designed for someone not willing to pay more than a few bucks no one is going to devote a lot of effort to making it look good.
how do i hack my psp for emulation? is it something a mid thirties guy with no technical experience could accomplish? I managed to get hbc, retroarch and cfg loader working on the wii and dosbox on the pc.
>>3381538
If you set up retro arch, then you can for sure hack a psp. Google psp cfw and you'll find what you need
>>3381548
ty, not asking to be spoonfed but is there a recent method I should be looking for? I had to google and sift through posts to find out you could use letterbomb for the wii instead of the older methods.
>>3381551
Pro CFW is what I've used. You literally just copy it to the memstick then run it each time you start up the system.
>>3381551
Here's a guide, just make sure to follow the steps closely.

>It's not going to fit in your pocket, though
If that's the issue, he can just go for a S5800 (smaller screen, but fits in your pocket).
>>3378418
Got a link for the most updated GBA emu release?
>>3378238
we dont emulate here, kiddo
fuck off to /v/
>>3383801

Fuck off to Reddit. You don't speak for the entire board, kid.
>>3383801
bullshit nigger, I play on the wii more than hardware. transferring saves to my phone and back feels futuristic to this oldfag.
Just use your old android phone
Does the PSP handle Neo Geo games such as Metal Slug series or that one Bomberman game well enough?
>>3383961
Not usually around this board but seconded.
What about just plying Anthology on the PSP for your Metal Slug needs though? Outside the loading times.
Just use wololo.net you gay retards
>>3378368
You can use the vwii to emulate N64 games, but you're stuck using the Wii remote ,so it's not even worth it.
