Does this game get an unfair rap?

It's an okay game. There were far better fps games on the market. The Radio City's architecture/style is amazing, which was designed by Aaron Barber and Viktor Antonov. They later joined Valve and worked on Half-Life 2.
I've never played it, but it's funny that I played their map in Soldier of Fortune as they use the same engine and the whole thing can be transferred except for the script and items of course.
I played it recently and I had a blast.
I remember reading a review of it in PCXL and they basically wrote out in prose the first ten minutes of the game and it sounded like a movie and I was blown away by the idea of a video game where people just casually threw around "fuck" like that. I was a gentle child.

kingpin was kinda the first more realistic game i remember where swearing was rampant, dont think i ever played too much through it though

It had/has a bad rap?
I loved It back in the day. Fps's with stories always drew me in.

Nah, SOF was average at best. The Ghoul engine for the gore was a bloody mess in the best way possible though. Even by today's standards it's brutal.

it was at least above average

The first level is really good, yes, but after that it kinda declines. The first level seems to be the only stage where "ridiculous" enemy spawning works. Jack the spawning up to maximum and watch the carnage.
