Can anyone explain how the Gameboy pocket is different to the other Gameboy models? Pros? Cons?
>>
>>3357553
i had one as a kid right before the color came out..

its just the upgrade of the gameboy. think of it as the ps1 slim. its literally just a smaller gameboy original with better battery life and a slightly nicer screen. if you want something to play original gameboy games on i would either go original or color. because there were some great gameboy color games and it will play either. the original advance and the advanced sp both also played original gameboy games aswell. if you are wanting a system specifically to play gameboy games and you don't already have a advanced i would recommend getting the gameboy advanced sp. best screen plays advanced all the way down to original gameboy and its rechargeable.
>>
its been yeeeeeeaaaaaars since I played with one, but here is what I know from my experience.
>black/gray screen, no green screen
>play gbc or gba with gb game cart, when nintendo logo drops press d-pad to black/white pallet.... thats the pocket.
>looks cleaner than old gb
>AAA batteries
>not really "pocket sized", similar size of gbc
>front looks like old gb
>back looks like they covered up the board, cart & battery slots, not enclosed like OG gameboy

this is the advanced sp. if you arn't going just for retro you just want to play games this is by far the nicest. rechargeable batteries and compatible with all gameboy and gamboy advanced series games. hunt around and you can pick one up for around 30$
>>
>>3357567
>if you want something to play original gameboy games on i would either go original or color.

same. Some of my old gameboy games actually have a proper color pallet on my gameboy color. Kirby's dreamland for example.... the world is yellow/green, but kirby himself is actually pink. Not all my games are unique like that. Some are like pokemon red/blue... everyone map location or town is a different solid color.
>>
>>3357572
it came out before color and only plays original gameboy games. its just a small gameboy.
>>
>>3357586
sp does the same thing too. i kinda regretted saying get the color when i remembered just how much i loved my sp and rethought it. it really is just the best gameboy in every way except nostalgia. i love the programmers for it though. some of the later gameboy games look WAY better on the color because they programmed them in a language that allowed more colors than the screen.
>>
>>3357553
I was working at Babbage's the day it released they were like $50 msrp and I got 20% off so I figured why not. They are the thinnest Game Boy there is. I carried it around on a wallet chain for years I can't tell you how many girls at parties sat on my lap to play it.
>>
I have a gb pocket but simply as a novelty. It looks cool and the screen is quite large/nice, but the size of the system makes my hands cramp/ feel numb within 10-15 minutes, which is worse than any other gameboy model
>>
>>3357553
>Pros
-More compact than the GBC and regular GBA
-The feel on the D-pad and buttons is the best out of all GB models (subjetive)
-Bigger screen than GB and GBC with the advantage of the cartridge not sticking out like on the GBA line.
-Metallic models look sick
-Very, very cheap.
-Uses standard batteries so you don't have to worry about the battery losing charge over time like on the GBA SP.

Cons:
-Uses AAA batteries which are known for not giving that much life.
-No power indicator in almost all models
-Screen still requires contrast adjustment for optimal play
-No backlight

>>3357572
plugging a gbc game into a gbp gives an error screen

If I remember right, you can't put GBC carts into the Original gameboy because of a catch on the power switch
>>
>>3357721
>those cons

you dont know shit
>>
>>3357773
How come? All of those are valid points.
>>
>>3357773
Seems legit to me. AAA batteries are a scam. I remember the Sega Menacer took like 8 of those things.
>>
>>3357553
Slightly smaller than a light.
No backlight. Worse battery life.

>>3357572
Well you got one or two things right I guess.

>>3357584
Good suggestion. You can still find new stock in some 3rd world countries for under $30. Probably best to just pay the $30 and avoid leprosy and hepatitis.
>>
>>3357995
>good suggestion
i have two and love mine. me and my fiance bought a pair of sp's forever ago when i found my original copy of pokemon from when i was a little kid. turns out my sister had found it YEARS after i had lost it and replaced my beloved childhood save state. me and her decided then to buy a copy of blue and 2 sps to build up a save game on my original cartridge to 151 collected. btw objective achieved. but i have played on the sps on and off since then with games like the remastered FF1 and 2 gba carts and yoshis wild world with the tilt sensors.. great remakes btw.
>>
>>3357553
The screen didn't blur out as much.
>>
Maybe I'm imagining it, but I feel like it was easier to see than the GBC screen.
>>
>>3357553
Think of the original GameBoy as the original DS.

The GameBoy Pocket is like the DS Lite. Smaller and lighter.
>>
>>3360364
It does indeed have the best screen of (non-lit) retro gameboys.
>>
>>3360404
Original GameBoy was very bulky and hard to get around.

Original DS was very bulky and hard to get around.

DS lite was the perfect form factor and supperior in every way.

GameBoy pocket is okay but nothing game changing.
>>
>>3357724
another interesting thing is that pokemon puzzle challenge has an early version of panel de pon GB hidden on it. You can play this version of panel de pon on a standard game boy, even when the cartridge is supposed to be only for game boy color.
>>
>>3360543

The bigger screen is another plus. Also, it's more aesthetically pleasing, imo.
>>
>>3360884
>CAN'T PLAY MY FUCKING EVERDRIVE GB
why?
>>
Gameboy pocket and other variations seemed to be the early marketing schemes before Samsung and Apple cashed in on the smartphone variations
>>
>>3361161
yeah, fuck a company for providing incremental updates as new tech becomes available and cost effective. It instantly makes your existing hardware malfunction, so you must buy a replacement
>>
>>3361169
Thanks for gracing us with you presence Mr Gates.
>>
It's made with shitty materials and can easily be destroyed with simple household implements, should you be so inclined.

I ended up doing that with a few of them, lord knows why. Get an SP.
>>
Remember to get the one with the battery light. You wouldn't believe how big of an issue this was with the first model.
>>

>>3357591
>>3357724
>>3357995

i think you misunderstood him, when you put a gb cart into a gbca and press dpad, then you get the color pallet of the pocket.

... but i could also be wrong

Make sure to get the AGS-101 model, it's backlit and provides much better light than the first model, the AGS-001, which is frontlit. You're limited in color choices for it, but if it's for use and not just collecting, the 101 is much better.
Pic related, it's both models on their high light setting.
>>
>>3361985
it's in the manual. Why don't you folks read yours?
>>
>>3357612
Look! An old man!
Period correct story there though
>babbages
>wallet chain

anyone know what parts the GBP shares with the DMG? the power switch looks identical between the two, d-pad looks the same, a/b not sure... but the start/select is definitely different.
also... is anyone able to power a GBP off of a 5v usb ac adapter? not sure if mine is blown up because of the whole 3v gameboy that some retard (me) plugged into a 5v adapter.

Or you could be the coolest kid in school and mod the AGS-101 screen into the original GBA. Proper display and top tier ergonomics.
>>
>>3364174
That looks like a pretty huge gap on the left there.
>>
>>3364275
It's tilted. Also that's the right.
>>
>>3364276
>right
Yeah, I'm retarded like that.
>tilted
Obviously. Still looks like a gap for shit to get into the GB.
>>
>>3364279
You know there's a plastic screen over it, right?
>>
>>3364280
Nope, I didn't. Thanks.
>>
>>3364301
... you, have you ever seen an actual handheld? ANY?
>>
>>3364303
The one in the picture is modded, that was why I asked at all. It looks like there is no cover at all.
>>
>>3364312
the hell? You see that huge black thing with the name of a certain bullshit handheld in big fat lettering? Again, have you seen ANY GB, GBC or GBA at all? Do you not understand how their screen assemblies work? Or are you just intellectually lazy?
>>
>>3364315
>just intellectually lazy
This, really. Thanks for clearing it up, buddy.
>>
Isn't there a way to glitch into the color dungeon in Links Awakening on a normal gameboy?
>>
>>3364315
Holy shit, calm down dude. He didn't post anything offensive and he already said he's retarded. How do you even survive on the internet?
>>
>>3365519
I think he meant retarded figuratively. As in he is prone to mixing up his left and right on occasion.
