I played Ys Origin (my first Ys game) from a friend's game library and after finishing it, I decided to get more into the series.

I started playing Ys 1 for the Sega Master System and I spent all my starting gold (1000g) on a healing potion. Is it too late to buy a starting sword? Did I already get myself stuck?
>>
turbografx version is better

So far, the fighting system where you just touch enemies to hurt them is pretty interesting.
>>
Why didn't you save before? Or just start over?
>>
Master System version is my first Ys and I remember it fondly, but seriously, play Ys 1 & 2 Chronicles instead or the PC Engine version if you want to keep it retro.
>>
>>3353173
Chronicles is practically the same as Eternal which came out in 1998 for Win 9x.
>>
>>3352672
If I recall, you're meant to buy a pendant and give it to a girl to turn a profit
>>
>>3353173
the cutscenes in chronicles are a lot shittier

I couldn't even follow what the hell was going on, when they were perfectly clear in all previous versions
>>
>>3353173
I explored more in this Ys game, and I'm already lost, haha. It takes forever to level and I can't afford more than the short sword and armour without killing hundreds of enemies.
>>
>>3353372
grinding takes a few minutes tops in the good versions of the game (Turbografx-CD, PC)
>>
>>3352749
>>3353385
I might just play Turbografx's version instead then.
>>
>>3353389
ya the master system is sort of the MSX version of the game. The TG16 version is seen as the main version of the game.
>>
>>3352672
Try to get ahold of the TurboGrafx-CD versions for Ys Book I and II and Ys III. They easily have some of the best soundtracks I've ever heard for games. Oath in Felghana has great music too but I still think the Turbo versions are better.
>>
>>3353575
Will do~ Give me an hour or two and will tell my opinion.
>>
>>3353575
I like the Sega Genesis version of Ys III better than any other version
>>
So any idea when a remake of 5 is going to happen? Also PC port of 7 and Celceta fucking when???
>>
>>3355195
>Also PC port of 7 and Celceta fucking when???

Technically, there already is one for both, and they're surprisingly good, but they're Chinese and it's a pain in the ass to get past the DRM system.
>>
>>3354565
Same. It feels the most balanced in terms of aesthetics and difficulty. I also like how they mixed up some of the songs a bit, specifically Death's Shock and Tower of Fate (to me, the former sounds much cooler sped up and the latter sounds fucking amazing in how grandiose it is compared to other versions). Translation is a bit odd though. Some names were flat out changed.

TG16 version feels a bit too easy at times and also has janky ass scrolling but has nice music arrangements and even has extra melodies added to some of them, but they don't loop, so you might they have some odd gaps here and there. Also, hilarious voice acting. I don't recall how faithful the translation is. It's a close second to me, despite some of the visual issues,

SNES version is retardedly cheap at times with difficulty. Parts even feel kinda buggy. Music and visuals are fucking abyssmal, but some players have a sick and twisted hard-on for them. Oddly enough, I do like the aesthetics of the same dev's version of Ys IV. Probably my second favorite of the three versions, though only aesthetically (it's a bit of a mess both early and end-game).

The PC-98 version is somewhat similar to the SMD version. I think some of the level ups might be different? Haven't played it and just going by what I recall.

The 8-bit versions are... bad.

OP here.

I still didn't start playing the Turbografx version of Ys 1 and 2 yet, but I'll definitely give it a try since I really found the grinding part of the Master Sega System version excruciating. Knowing the soundtrack is also superior, that's a bonus since I normally play games for their good tunes that go with the good gameplay and plots.

I never ran a PC Engine/Turbografx emulator before, so I'm having a bit of trouble on finding out how to run it since mounting 'Ys' into a virtual drive doesn't seem to work. Trying to learn more.
>>
>>3356883
Use an emulator that doesn't need a virtual drive, like mednafen or retroarch.

Time to see what's better with this version.
The music--Definitely a major improvement!
>>

I hope you took the previous anon's advice, and didn't install daemontools or some shit

daemontools is filled with malware these days
>>
>>3357861
No worries, I ended up using Mednafen since it seemed to be the only way to run image files without mounting. Aside the fact it's hard to get into it with its less user-friendly system, it's pretty amazing for a multi-system tool.
>>
>>3359364
retroarch is easier to use, and it uses the same mednafen cores for some systems

I have the collection of the remakes on Steam, but I'm not sure if I should go with "COMPLETE" or "CHRONICLES". I know "COMPLETE" is an older version with different music, but I don't know all the differences.
>>
>>3363110
The version on steam (Chronicles+) has the Ys Complete music in it as an option. Just play the Steam versions you already own, you can even set it to the older artwork too if you want.
>>
I can't breath the best boss in the PC engine one
>>
>>3352672
So what's the best version of Ys 4? I hear there are like a million versions that are pretty much their own game, so I'm not sure which one to go for. Keep in mind I don't have Vita/PSP/whatever console the remake was released in.
>>
>>3363154
>I can't breath the best boss

>>
>>3365319

>>3365189
PC Engine is best, only plebs like the newer weaker remakes that make the whole series look like a generic animu game.
>>
>>3365359
Alright then. I downloaded the PC Engine version and so far is pretty cool, I just wish the music sounded better, like Rondo of Blood since they both use CDs, but eh, I guess it'll grow on me.
>>
i played the psp version because the anime girls are cute

i regret nothing
>>
>>3352672
Please play Chronicles and Oath in Felghana. You'll probably enjoy them a lot more considering they're the best.

6 also uses the same engine as OiF and Origin so you'll probably like that as well.

>>3365189
Pc engine version is the best of the original Ys 4 games. psv version is significantly better than the snes version of 4 which is probably my least favorite.

I wouldn't worry too much about playing them in order aside from 1 and 2 since most of the stories aren't too connected. You will miss some small details but most of them are related to why you're getting off a boat, or fan theory stuff about Galbalans and whatever something about ores that I can't quite remember.

If you play the ones on steam + 5 (which I wouldn't consider one of the better ones but it's short and easy), 7, and psv 4 you can get most of the story.

Pc engine is good, but I believe it's non canon. Which is a shame because it was way better than snes 4.
>>
>>3365189
>>3365518
>>3365359

The Ys 4 on PCE isn't canon. The one on SNES is though. I think they remade it for the Vita, and it used the story from the SNES version
>>
>>3365359
>that make the whole series look like a generic animu game.

No shit, Dawn of Ys also looked like a generic animu game at the time.
>>
>>3365773

It was "canon" until they completely overhauled it with Celceta.

And IMO, Celceta screwed with the story too.

What is with Adol meeting Galbalans before III in Celceta and and actually knowing how to kill them also? That fact either retcons a lot of Oath of Felghana's story or it just makes Chester's death seem all the more pointless

Ok, yeah, I love this version much more. I'm having a blast since I somehow get a Zelda 1 vibe from its simplicity.
The music is better than I thought it was too.

What I thought would be a strange combat system turned out to be unique in an interesting way since I can literally just play with one hand (the d-pad) most of the time.
>>
>>3366081
Chester's death in Oath in Felghana already felt pointless since they turned him into an irredeemable prick who doesn't have a change of heart until the final moment, instead of good guy who was only forced into doing bad shit to keep his family safe like in the original Ys III

God I fucking hate that remake so much
>>
>>3365782
Thing is that you could tell it apart of other things. If you would show anyone Ys 6, Oath or Memories of Celceta without the logo or title of the game. I bet they wouldn't know what game it is.
>>
>>3366685
>If you would show anyone Ys 6, Oath or Memories of Celceta without the logo or title of the game. I bet they wouldn't know what game it is.

Show anyone Ys I & II PCE and DoY without the logo or title of the game. I bet they wouldn't know what game it is. At least Memores of Celceta runs on a different engine.

Falcom games, much like Fire Emblem and Tales, have always went on the common manga/anime tropes of the time. It really isn't Falcom's fault that we are stuck in the idol/schoolharem timeline. Blame Japan for that.

All the Ys I & II Complete art's great, though Chronicles isn't far behind.

>>3366685
Between Xak III, Ys IV, Eternal Filena, Efera and Jiliora, Dungeon Explorer, and Lodoss War/Slayers games, someone unacquainted with each game could definitely get confused just because of their early-1990s Western fantasy premise/visual style. The PC Engine CD's a haven for this kind of game.

>>3367014
>It really isn't Falcom's fault that we are stuck in the idol/schoolharem timeline. Blame Japan for that.
Western Falcom fans' tastes are closer to the old Japanese PC aficionado mindset than the vast majority of Asian fans, so the best we can do is get folks to buy Xanadu Next and other upcoming localizations of older Falcom games to prod the company. It's not like Falcom employees don't care for the style of old. President Kondo wants to remake Sorcerian, too, which I believe is a sacred cow among older Falcom fans in Japan and is less likely to adopt a newer aesthetic.

tl;dr Buy Xanadu Next
>>
>>3368040
Isn't Xanadu their biggest game before Ys?

I don't see the upset with changing the looks. The PCE games looked significantly different from the computer versions.
>>
>>3352672
desu the 3d Ys games are miles better than the run-into-shit-to-attack ones. Napishtim and Felghana are by far some of the best video games in existence
>>
>>3369320
Pretty much all the Ys games are amongst the best games in existence.
>>
are there any other series similar to ys? besides like legend of zelda or alundra anything thats must play?
>>
>>3369347
Xak, Hydlide, Dragon Slayer 1, Xanadu, Babylonian Castle Saga
>>
>>3369347
The Xak series made by Micro Cabin, for starters. First game released on PC-88 and MSX2, so it's contemporary with Ys III and roughly equals the length of Ys I & II with similar bumping/exploration mechanics. II and III both divert, the latter especially, as the story and music got more brooding and the difficulty steeper. These games aren't too well-balanced, but they have a consistent world like Ys, tons of bosses to deal with, and so forth. I can't believe no one's tried to remake even the first game on any platform other than early-2000s Japanese flip-phones.

>>3369350
First two Dragon Slayer games really aren't comparable, as the former's a stat-heavy maze game and the latter a unforgiving dungeon crawling adventure. Hydlide III and Xak would be my picks; don't know why you'd recommend Druaga/Ishtar to someone looking for an Ys-y experience, they're too different in style/mechanics/structure.

>>3368920
Xanadu sold even better than Ys I and Ys II individually, becoming Falcom's signature title for years after 1985. Legend of Xanadu isn't really Xanadu—the game's real title, Kaze no Densetsu (Legend of the Wind), wasn't going to push as many copies sold. Same with Tokyo Xanadu now.
>>
>>3369358
They're not further from Ys than Zelda.
