I bought the Super Mario World Japanese player's guides sometime last year.
I disbinded and scanned them for the benefit of the /vr/ collective, and now I'm done with Volume 2. If you missed the last thread, I included a link to the first one too.

The hi res versions are 600dpi so if you want to print them out, they'll look alright. No 3mm bleeds though.

Here are the smaller low res versions:
Volume 1 / 24.8 MB: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/152153442/SMW-APE-Guide/SMWapeLoRe.pdf
Volume 2 / 11.2 MB: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/152153442/SMW-APE-Guide/SMWape2LoRe.pdf

The full, non-compressed versions are here:
Volume 1 / 1.9 GB: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/152153442/SMW-APE-Guide/SMWAPEvol1.pdf
Volume 2 / 1.0 GB: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/152153442/SMW-APE-Guide/SMWAPEvol2.pdf

Points from last thread:
• I'm now left with a bunch of pages and I don't dare to rebind it so if someone wants the disbinded book, I can send it to you via mail.
• If someone could translate the comics and developer interviews, that'd be grand. The entirety of the book would of course be better, but that might be too much to ask for.

No problem.
The comics in the second volume is better and there seems to be more variety in the content (I believe there's a glitches section?) but sadly the hand-drawn maps have been replaced with crude screenshot maps.

An Anon posted links here a few weeks ago for Zelda scan collectons - including manuals artwork music etc.

The user who complied them was "tlozilyv". I think they were featured on 4Chan but I'll be fucked if I can find them.

Does anyone have the links?:

Why does everyone keep saying MEGA, if OP is inactive in 3 months the links will disappear, it's dead links all over the goshdarn web thanks to mega.

I've been using mediafire for what feels like a decade now and all my shit is still up. Now obviously don't use mediafire for larger files, but for this is perfectly serviceable.

Either way OP is a fucking legend
>>
>>3342846
>3 months inactivity and they're gone
Holy shit dude
I had no idea. This is worrying.
Dropbox preserves them for much longer least, but they have an inactivity meter too. And the bandwidth issues.

Think archive.org would accept them?
>>
>>3342861
Honestly your best bet would be to upload to multiple sites. Mediafire is the best, followed by dropbox. There is also Google Drive, Box.com and mega. Setting up a torrent for both would work too but it'd be a bit more complicated.

Speaking of scans, here's a bunch of Video Game Manga scans, most of them based on /vr/ age games, like Yoshi's Island, Mario World, Donkey Kong Country and more:

>>
>>3342861
I don't honestly know how archive.org works, but considering how they have a buttload of old Japanese Eroge/VN magazines up there, they probably are up for all this retro junk. Maybe though because it's copyrighted material and not abandoneware yet, maybe they don't want any trouble with Nintendo. But still I guess you could try, archive.org is obviously the best place.

Still I don't know if the uploads are vetted or if anyone can just upload whatever.

Sheit, I remember last year when I did the page cleanup for translatorfag, for that Popful Mail / Keio Flying Squadrin doujin. It's actually more time consuming than I thought (I mean if you want to do it right at least and not just pass it all through a batch filter). Really makes you appreciate all those amateur scanlators out there.

>>3342962
I edit a lot of manga on the side, so it'd be no real trouble for me. The issue is a lot of these manga are merely just 4 koma, so a lot of people just ignore 'em. Theres some legit manga adaptions in there though, personally I think the most interesting ones are the Donkey Kong ones.

I guess I'll translate the first comic now, after that I go to sleep though. I will post from time to time when I have time to translate something if anyone is interested.
If you want the first volume translated too let me know and I'll start from there. This is the comic in volume 2 starting page 4. I replaced Koopa with Bowser.

L - We're finally here, big brother
Y - It's a castle, that's such bad taste

M - Princess Peach, I'm coming nooow!
L - Wait a minute, big bro. Let's take a little rest

B - Ga ha ha, so you've come, Mario!!
M/L - Wah!

P - Help!! Mario!!!
B - Have a taste of this!!

bunch of onomatopoeia, skipping to p.6

B - Ow / Ow-ow
P - Kyaaah!

P - Mario!

B - Dammit / You'll regret this

M - Seems Bowser learned his lesson...
L - Hey, wait for me!
Box - You who defeated Bowser! There are still plenty of secrets to discover in Dinosaur Land. Try and look for your own unique adventure!!

I'll try and find some more interesting thing like interviews or whatever next time.

Start of the interview at the end of vol.2

Mario Series Sound Composer Kondou Kouji

With the release of Watanabe Sadao's musical performance CD, The "melody maker" Mr. Kondou is receiving increasing praise. Investigating the roots of his music.

Mario Developer Interview Number 2

(Photo annotation)
Profile
Sound composer who produced known works remaining in history in the music of such games as Mario, Zelda and New Onigashima. Currently devoting himself to the sound production of "New Zelda", on sale this autumn.
Born in Nagoya, age 29

Baptism by Jazz, Fusion and Hard Rock

Just what would you say are the roots of your music?
K - It started when I was in the first year of primary school and was learning on the Electone. On piano, I was doing nothing but etudes, which I thought was boring. I guess I wanted to try and play real pieces right away. In retrospect, sometimes I think it would have been good if I had done piano.

Are there any particulary genres and artists do you enjoy?
K - I've liked jazz and fusion since I was middle school. Of course, I also listened a lot to Watanabe Sadao's work (rude laughter from the interviewer). No, really. I also went to a lot of concerts. There was a time I quite idolized him as well. I copied him on the Electone.
When I was in middle school, I was also engrossed by hard rock. A great deal of our generation was influenced by it at the same time.

>>
>>3347809
Are there any recent albums that you've liked?
K - I've been liking Shang Shang Typhoon, for one. Other than that, Gipsy Kings and such, mostly world music.

Have you been thinking about working in a field related to music from the time you were in primary school?
K - No, I wasn't. It was my hobby, so I was thinking how it would be nice to keep doing it, that's more how it was. I did join an amateur band at one point, though. Even in university, I didn't join a music school or anything.

Where did you enroll in university?
It was a program called Art Planning in Osaka University of the Arts. It's a program that I didn't really understand just from the name. It involved studying all sorts of art like visual arts, music and literature in a general, wide and superficial way.
>>
>>3347809

>>
>>3347861
Did you enter Nintendo as a game development programmer?
K - No. I joined Nintendo in the first year that they were recruiting specialized music staff. I was working with sound from the start.

What kind of work did you handle at the very beginning when you entered Nintendo?
K - It was composing pieces in Family BASIC using musical notes entered as katakana. I reproduced the theme songs of Sazae-san, Doraemon and such.
I also programmed and played pieces by Matsuda Seiko in BASIC.

(photo annotation)
First appearance! Mr. Kondou's workplace. At the back of the keyboard, a Mario plushie...

He debuts with Doraemon on Family BASIC

About how many music specialist staff like you are there at Nintendo?
K - Umm, 10 people, I think.

That seems like unexpectedly few people.
K - That might be true. Because of that, work piles up quite a bit. Even now, making New Zelda's music, as soon as I progress on the next piece, I have to hurry up and continue the work on this other one.
>>
>>3348002
I would like to ask about the process of creating the sound for a game. What kind of work do you start with at the very beginning?
K - Basically, firstly the game's image concept is settled and the scenes are completed, and I try to think of music based on that. Normally, the first piece I compose is the game's main theme, but for Mario 1, for some reason I was having a lot of trouble, so the first piece that I finished was the piece for the underwater levels. I felt that in water, the music should be a waltz, so it all came to me at once. But that is definitely a rare case.

How did you manage to make Mario's main theme?
K - At first, I thought of the image of walking around in a grass-covered plain. From there, I applied a "nohoho~n" kind of carefree and heartwarming piece to it.
At that point, when I listened to it with the actual level, the game's speed and rhythm didn't match at all, so that didn't work. Afterwards, I added a swingy piece to it, but a lot of people thought the music was unpleasant, so that was also scrapped.
In the meantime, the theme's "cha, cha, cha" part's melody came to my mind, and it just expanded from there.

Might do the last section tomorrow

What instrument do you use to compose initially?
K - The keyboard. But the sound of the keyboard is different from the actual Super Famicom, so I convert the parts that are done as soon as possible to listen to them. But it's not like the piece is done from the start; as I convert the sound to the Super Famicom, I keep re-arranging until the piece is complete. Because of that, I don't leave musical scores. Later on, I'm asked to please make a musical score, so I hurriedly write it from the data.

>>
>>3360472
You're right, there was a long time between starting the project and finishing it, but it was mostly because the first volume was in subpar condition and I had to fix all the shit the previous owner had done to the pages in Photoshop, not to mention I had a not-so-good computer back then.
The second volume was a much easier job because it's in such pristine condition and now I have a Mac Pro - it took me maybe a week.
>PSD version
Yes - they exists for both scans, but I really don't feel like uploading them right now because of their huge size.

>>3360508
At least the Japanese seem to be very careful with their media. Most SFC games I've bought and the second volume were in extraordinary condition, so it's safe to say that Japan preserves the media physically, while we preserve them digitally.

Nevermind, found it. There's some other cool stuff in the book despite being a low-quality scan.

This is what Nintendo encouraged you to do.

Sure it's easier than making a perfect cape flight in that level to get the hidden exit but this is surprising to me.

>3-up moon

What in the fuck. I've played SMW for decades and never seen this before

Thanks for the scan anon
>>
>>3361987

What? You never got a moon?

They are rarer than 1ups but not THAT difficult to find.
>>
>>3361996
imo they are. Each world has one and I think only one of them is obvious.
The one in Yoshi's Island: how the fuck can anyone find that
The one in Donut Plains: yeah I guess you could maybe find it
The one in Vanilla Dome: no way anyone would think about going there
The one in Cheese Bridge area: well you'll run into it anyway, so I guess it's obvious if you know the secret exit
The one in Forest of Illusion: Well okay, this one's somewhat easy to find
The one in Chocolate Island: Really well hidden imo
The one in Bowser's Valley: the only obvious one I think
>>
>>3361769
>>3361804

I actually found out people did that to get to the secret exit recently, all my life it never occurred to me to use Yoshi, and I still refuse to, fuck that! Mastering the cape in order to get to that secret exit is an essential part of SMW to me.

Anyway, I still think the devs didn't intend players to use Yoshi, note how in the middle of the level there's a block that gives you Yoshi wings.
>>
>>3362008

You can find one by just flying around with the cape in the sky. I remember that's how I found my first one, messing around with the flying move.
>>
>>3362008
>The one in Vanilla Dome: no way anyone would think about going there

I actually did as a kid because of a fake rumor that said something like, if you go to the end of vanilla dome 3, and then fly all back to the beginning of the level without touching the ground once, you'll find the secret Moon World. I remember trying a lot of shit on that level to see if I could find it, but I guess in the end it was a silly rumor started because of the 3-up moon that you can actually find flying back on that level.

I gotta get in on this thread. SMW is probably my favorite game of all time. I never owned a Super Nintendo as a kid, but rather an NES. I remember going over to my neighbors house many times a week to play this game.

I remember seeing Bowser's Valley for the first time through that little pipe shortcut and being absolutely stunned.

I truly think this is one of those flawless games.

Nice uploads OP. Is there any database with all SMW related magazine articles, artwork, and other official prints of things somewhere? Maybe on some old fancies like TMK?

Are you me? with the exception that I had a Famiclone instead of an actual NES, but the same happened to me, went to a neighbor's house who had a SNES with SMW, showed me bowser valley through the donuts plains shortcut and I think my mind got fried.

Eventually I got a SNES, though.

God this game was so fucking good! I remember being so intimidated by Bowser's Valley with it's thunder, lightning, and what was assumed to be Bowser himself flying around.

I remember the thrill of finding new secrets to unlock, and thinking I had them all only to discover a new one!

TO ALL: I remember my cousin gave me some sort of magazine, or pamphlet (I don't recall it having as many pages as a full fledged magazine) that has a SMW section about secrets. I remember reading it and finding so many new areas (Soda Lake one of them) because of it. I know this is a complete shot in the dark, but does anyone know what I'm talking about? This was probably around the 2000s era in the Midwest (USA). The magazine was in English. It wasn't Nintendo Power.

Is there a website that has scans of all content relating to SMW? Some sort of fan site or something?

So, I posted a few times back during the original scanbro threads.

I have a pretty substantial collection of old japanese game books. I'd like to start a site (or tumblr/instagram) and catalog my collection for others to check out. I don't want to have to destroy my books to scan them, so I was considering just taking photos of the books if there were requests for it.

Would anyone of you be interested in that? I know it isn't as good as having high res scans, but I can't find a decent book scanner intended for photo heavy work.
>>

I was surprised y this glimpse of the final world because I did not expect it to look that way. Did not expect Bowser's castle looking more like a disco with a huge neon sign, like he's saying "FUCK YEAH I'M BOWSER MOTHERFUCKER! HERE I AM, MARIO COME AND GET ME IF YOU DARE!"
>>
>>3369472
That would be extremely cool.
Sharing such niché content is a thankless job but it's always super interesting to see stuff you wouldn't necessarily see anywhere else - see http://www.suppermariobroth.com/ (real url but really a Tumblr in disguise)
Precisely the reason I'd suggest a Tumblr - it allows you to have other people submit stuff to the blog too and is a fantastic content management system.

I can't confirm this, but at least instagram.com/superfamicomguy 's Instagram's photos (the older ones where he takes photos of the boxes alone) are taken with a phone camera no less - as long as the lighting is fine, you should get great results.
Of course if you have a bad phone, this is a moot point.

I went and made a pretty simple tumblr as a proof of concept.

http://guidebookheaven.tumblr.com

I have a lot of work to do. Lighting, angles, sorting, and even the layout all need work. Any help is welcome.
>>
>>3373672
Looks really nice! I like the name too.

Some suggestions, though:
• Ditch the angled view. Make the first image always a front sided one, something along >>3369695.
• Don't upload images, upload albums (image groups? whatever they're called) where the first one is the front image. + A few other photos, like the angled view, the back cover, and ~three photos from the inside spreads. It's such a tease to see the cover only.
• The title alone isn't enough - add in the release year and publisher (if applicable)
• If you can, tell a bit about the guide. Just a small few-sentence story will do
>>
>>3373693

Yeah, those photos were just a test to see how the page would look. I planned on making multiple shots per book like you suggested.

I'm also wondering if the layout is too.. plain? I feel like it could be more comfy. The theme I have is pretty stingy about what I can change and I don't know much html.
>>
>>3373718
I think it boils down to personal preference. I think the layout is perfect - in my opinion, the best design is as little design as possible. Besides, it'll get a lot busier when it's filled to the brim with content.

I don't know that much about Tumblr and how it allows you to customize the pages, but every time I've tried it's been a pain. The layout editor panel only allows you to make CSS changes and some pseudo-HTML, and even though I've seen really cool page layouts, I've come to the conclusion that it's better to just leave them be.
>>
>>3373745

Mm, suppose so.

I'm gonna do a little shopping tomorrow and get a place setup I can photograph these in neutral light. I'll make sure to get multiple angles and some content shots.

The best kinds of guide books have special comics and artwork done just for them, so I'll be sure to include those.

I tried a new format for the tumblr. Is this more in line with what you guys would wanna see? I'm not happy with the presentation / lighting / quality yet. Might get a better camera (also waiting for a tripod).
>>
>>3375771

the quality of the pics looks good to me, maybe it'd be better if you made a single pic for each page, at least those with text, because it's make it easier for anons who might want to read or even translate.
>>
>>3375778

You mean photograph every page or not do spreadshots?
>>
>>3375797
I'd rather have spreadshots than separate pages.
If you have nice looking hands, I wouldn't mind looking at photographs where you deliberately hold the spread in your hand so you can stretch it a bit.
That particular image >>3375771 looks otherwise fine but the bright light casts a specular on the middle, which is undesirable.

My advice: The first image always a top-view cover shot, then a couple of spreadshots, a few closeups of the interesting parts and finally the back cover

Yeah, I'm new to photographing these kinds of things so I'm still working out the lighting and everything.

I'll try to highlight the most interesting parts of the book, too. Once I figure out my setup I'll be able to upload finished content with consistency and not just these test posts.

I might make/get something like this for the spreads.
