So I found 15 Ti-99 4/a games at a thrift store, is it worth spending nearly $100 canadian to get one?
>>
Since there's an 80% chance they're just kiddie eduware, no.

That thing's software library suuuuccks.
>>
I swear in the name of God and all things holy, I've found 2x as much TI-99/4A shit in thrift stores than all the Commodore 64 stuff I've ever seen in my life.

These are the better ones I got

Someone is selling an untested console without the powercord for 25 canuck bucks but I donno where I'd get a power cord for it
>>
>>3317585
>console

A computer is not a console. A Mounds Bar is not a console. A Jolly Rancher is not a console. What, sir? What were you thinking!?
>>
why would it be 100 bucks? what a jewish thrift store

I don't know about that particular computer, but I got a Tandy TRS 80 at goodwill for like 9 dollars
>>
>>3317518
That was one of my favorite machines growing up but I honestly couldn't recommend it to someone today for gaming . Fine for collectors of nostalgia but not a great library of games.

>>3317585
A few nice things there. Making a replacement PS is even easier today than it was in the early 80's. Piss easy using off the shelf parts. There's also a good chance an untested one may work. These are built like tanks.

>>3317616
A machine that you plug carts into and play games can certainly be considered a console. In fact, in this machines time there were still plenty of machines that actually had consoles. What, child? What were you thinking?
>>
I had a TI-994A my dad thought would be just as good as an NES. It wasn't. He would type in whole games in Basic then save then to tape for me. I knew how to load games from tape but there was no local tape duplicating scene that I was aware of though he was pretty anti piracy back then. I wish he'd have sprung for a C64 but it was more expensive and had a reputation as a gaming computer which for some reason he thought was a negative. Probably my favorite game for it was TI Flight. Just recently I bought Microsurgeon and the Adventure loader cart. I also liked Shamus pretty good and it has an okay port of Parsec. All in all it's pretty D tier. Once I got an NES I basically only played Lode Runner on it. If you're going to spend $100 get a C64
>>
>>3317750
They only had the games, I'm talking its gonna cost just under $100 to get one from ebay with shipping to Canadastan
>>
Nah dude. If you really want a physical TI99 you can get them online for much less including shipping. I had one for a while and it was pretty miserable for gaming - honestly I'd just emulate any game you were curious to play. It's a cool computer but... not 100bux cool.
>>
>>3317802
>In fact, in this machines time there were still plenty of machines that actually had consoles

Whut.
>>
>>3317802
>Fine for collectors of nostalgia

Not even that.
>>
>>3317518
With a speech synthesizer add-on and the Terminal Emulator II cartridge it can do text-to-speech in the Speak-N-Spell voice which in electronic music crowd might be pretty cool

>>
>>3318332
I think he didn't word that very well and he meant to say "cartridge slot".
>>
>>3318021
>I had a TI-994A my dad thought would be just as good as an NES. It wasn't. He would type in whole games in Basic then save then to tape for me

Huh? Since when did anyone still have a TI/99-4A by the time the NES was a thing? That shit was long dead by that point.
>>
They're just a cute novelty more than anything else.
>>
>>3318349
We had it before but the fact that we had it was one excuse for putting off getting an NES.
>>
I found a TI-99/4A in a thrift store once as well in its original box with the PSU, speech synthesizer, and RF adapter. Plugged it into one of the TVs there and the power light came on, but absolutely nothing else happened. I did have the video cable plugged in properly and the TV set to Channel 3/4 but there wasn't even a flash of light on the screen or a flicker or anything.
>>
I would say no. You should be able to get an Atari ST or Amiga 500 for that price, and those are a lot more capable.
>>
>>3318368
He doesn't live in Yurop, dude.
>>
>>3318373
They sold those computers in USA. They just weren't as popular as PC, but they had their fanbase.
Anyway you should be able to find some on ebay, if there's none in your area.
>>
The architecture/design of these things was a disaster:

>super-slow double interpreted BASIC
>CPU that nobody knew how to program
>in order to save money, TI rigged it so the VRAM is used as the main system RAM--this means the CPU can only access it during the VBLANK which slows things down further
>since the 9918 video chip has a 14-bit address bus, you can never access more than 16k of RAM at once--although it was possible to expand the computer to 192k, everything has to be bank switched through this 16k window
>ridiculous expansion--either put everything in a long train of stuff next to the computer or shell out for the official expansion chassis
>crap keyboard layout that made word processing a headache
>>
>>3318396
The ST was barely even existent here except as a MIDI tool besides it's just a poor man's Amiga with almost no unique software.
>>
>>3318397
And to top it off, TI refused to release any tech info for the thing until it was too late and then they demanded that third parties give them a percentage of the profit from software sales. The late white case TI-99/4As even included a lockout feature to prevent unauthorized third party cartridges from running.
>>
>>3318402
ST isn't as powerful as Amiga, but it's easier to program.
Also there's tons of games, some which were never ported to Amiga (SunDog, for example).
I'd take one anyday over TI-99 or other thing like TRS-80. Of course if you offered me Amiga instead, I'd take that. But I think both are nice machines.

anon, your texas instrument calculator that you used in graduation in the 80s waas a computer, your nokia first model monochrome cellphone was a computer, and a super nintendo was a computer.

these vintage hardware that could be patented or open architechture, use one or more media types can hardly be classified as being consoles or not-console personal computers solely by the presence of a keyboard.
>>
The ST never impressed me. It always felt like a cheap toy which is not shocking coming from the cheap shittiness of Tramiel-era Atari. Unless you're a MIDIfag or a Yuropoor, there's no reason to bother with that shit.
>>
>>3318417
>anon, your texas instrument calculator that you used in graduation in the 80s waas a computer

But I graduated in 2006.
>>
>>3318428
Your cellphone that you use for fapping to traps in the bathroom is a computer.
>>
>>3318428
I was referring to myself in the third person, not you, you barnacle head.
>>
>>3318428
Then what the fucking fuck are you doing in a thread about an EIGHTIES computer you stupid 90s shitbabby. Go jerk it to Vice City or something, you piece of human shit.
>>
>>3318450
Oh boy, here we go.
>>
>>3317518
>is it worth spending nearly $100?
define worth?

you mean how much you could profit by selling it?
get a real work lazy faggot in the end a halt time job will bring you more dough than the weekly hours you spend trying what might seem like easy cash when in fact you're just wasting time

15 games for $100 that seems ok thats $6 per game

only if you have the computer they go into offcourse, there isnt much to it and just worth as a curiosity, its neither rare to be worth as a colectible neither entertaining enough to have ppl looking to own one.

>>3318437
>not printing your porn on your HP deskjet 690c with the special color ink cartridge for photographs instaled, to fap in the bathroom in peace
>back then trans porn was dicks copied over photos of female models using ms paint probably, man those were the good traps, not today's men with tits

Keep in mind that you will need an adapter to use any joystick besides TI's absolutely atrocious ones.
>>

TI-99/4As are common and dirt cheap because unlike a C64, nobody really wants them.
>>
They sold 2.8 million of the things so it was hardly a loser sales wise but TI didn't make a dime of profit on them.
>>
My dad knew an idiot who bought a TI-99/4A on clearance in 1984 because they were selling the things for $60 just to get rid of them. That poor guy lived to regret it.

Computers used to have consoles. Originally they were a control panel and later the CRT+keyboard, often in a single case. This, for example, why the KDE terminal is called Konsole.
